Today's scores and summaries:
A's 7, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Apparently overworked, Wilbur Wood suffered his fourth straight defeat and sixth in his last seven decisions as the White Sox lost to the Athletics, 7-1. Wood gave up 14 hits and all of the A's runs before being lifted after seven innings. The A's wrapped up the game with four runs in the third on singles by Sal Bando, Deron Johnson and Gene Tenace, a wild pitch, an error that loaded the bases and single by Dick Green. Dick Allen homered for the only Pale Hose run off Dave Hamilton.
Rangers 3, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
With last-inning help from Bill Gogolewski, Jim Merritt gained his first victory of the season when the Rangers defeated the Royals, 3-0. Merritt yielded only four hits. The Rangers scored once on a single by Ken Suarez and double by Jim Mason in the third inning before clinching the verdict with two more runs in the fourth on three singles, an error and a groundout.
Brewers 8, Indians 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Sparked by Don Money, who tripled with the bases loaded in the second inning, the Brewers defeated the Indians, 8-2, to end their four-game losing streak. Jim Colborn, after giving up two runs to the Indians in the first on a single by Buddy Bell, pass to Oscar Gamble and triple by Charlie Spikes, pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way to gain his fifth straight victory and 10th of the season. The Brewers pinned Mike Kekich with the defeat when Johnny Briggs walked, Bob Coluccio and Pedro Garcia singled and Money hit his triple.
Angels 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The Angels rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Twins, 4-3. Singles by Mike Epstein, Richie Scheinblum, Al Gallagher and Bob Oliver provided the tying tallies. Jerry DaVanon, running for Gallagher, took third on Oliver's pinch hit and scored the winning run on a single by Sandy Alomar.
Yankees 5, Tigers 4 at New York (night game):
The Yankees came from behind with a homer by Thurman Munson and two-run double by Bobby Murcer in the seventh inning to defeat the Tigers, 5-4. After the Tigers scored four runs in the top half of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead, Munson's homer ignited the Yankees' rally. Then, with one out, Horace Clarke and Matty Alou singled and Murcer doubled to drive in the tying and winning runs.
Dodgers 3, Reds 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bill Buckner singled with two out in the 10th inning to score Steve Yeager and give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Reds. The Dodgers counted twice in the second on singles by Ron Cey, Manny Mota, Willie Crawford and Bill Russell, together with a sacrifice fly by Yeager, and held the lead until the ninth when Dan Driessen singled and Johnny Bench homered to send the game into overtime. In the 10th, Yeager singled and moved around to third on a sacrifice by Pete Richert and infield out by Von Joshua before scoring on Buckner's bingle.
Expos 4, Phillies 2 at Montreal (night game):
Steve Carlton's record slipped to 7-8 when the Expos knocked out the lefthander in the sixth inning and defeated the Phillies, 4-2. Mike Torrez, making his 15th start of the season for the Expos, turned in his first complete game and gained his first victory since May 4. Del Unser homered for the Phillies in the first inning, but Ron Woods walked in the Expos' half and scored on an infield out and single by Hal Breeden. Two walks and a single by John Boccabella put the Expos ahead in the fifth. Torrez singled in the sixth, took second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Woods. After Carlton walked Clyde Mashore, Billy Wilson relieved. Mike Jorgensen then singled to drive in Woods.
Mets 5, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Mays drove in three runs with a double and John Milner followed with a homer in a second-inning burst that carried the Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Singles by Jim Fregosi and George Stone around a walk to Ron Hodges loaded the bases and set the stage for Mays' double. Then, after two out, Milner hit his homer. The Pirates came back with three runs in their half on a homer by Richie Zisk, a walk, single by Rennie Stennett, a sacrifice and double by Gene Clines. Stone then checked the Pirates until giving up an unearned run in the ninth on a two-base error by Fregosi and two-out single by Clines.
Braves 7, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Hank Aaron hit his 692nd career homer and also drove in another run with a single as the Braves defeated the Padres, 7-3. Aaron's homer came in the second inning off Randy Jones, who was making his first major league start for the Padres. Davey Johnson also homered for the Braves, connecting with two men on base in the eighth. Aaron's two hits gave him a total of 3,432 for his career and moved the Braves' superstar into fourth place on the major leagues' all-time list.
Giants 5, Astros 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Ed Goodson drove in all of the Giants' runs with two homers to defeat the Astros, 5-1. Bobby Bonds was safe on an error in the first and Tito Fuentes singled, but the next batters went out before Goodson hammered a three-run homer. Lee May singled, hitting safely in his 21st straight game for a Houston club record, to help the Astros pick up their run in the second. Goodson iced the game with his second homer in the seventh, hitting it after a walk to Willie McCovey.
Cardinals 3, Cubs 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Reggie Cleveland yielded only three singles and the Cardinals rewarded his work by scoring three runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Cubs, 3-0. Doubles by Ted Simmons and Bernie Carbo produced the first tally to decide Cleveland's duel with Burt Hooton. Jim Dwyer followed with a single, but Carbo slipped en route to the plate and was thrown out trying to score. Dwyer took second on the throw. After an intentional pass to Mick Kelleher, Cleveland singled to load the bases and Lou Brock followed with a single to drive in a pair of insurance markers.
