Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Red Sox 5, Orioles 1 (night game) / Orioles 2, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
In a split of special significance to Ray Culp and Jesse Jefferson, who were the winning pitchers, the Red Sox captured the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-1, and the Orioles came back to take the second game, 2-1, in 10 innings. Culp, who returned to the Red Sox from Pawtucket (International) two weeks ago, gained his first major league victory since last July 2. Culp was on the disabled list the last half of 1972 and underwent an operation on a torn muscle in his shoulder during the winter. The veteran righthander needed help from Bobby Bolin after giving up the Orioles' run in the eighth on a triple by Al Bumbry and sacrifice fly by Paul Blair. Rico Petrocelli had four hits for the Red Sox and drove in two of their talles. In the nightcap, Jefferson, a rookie righthander from Rochester (International), made his first appearance for the Orioles and hurled the route, allowing seven hits. The Orioles scored the deciding run in the 10th on a double by Blair and single by Earl Williams.

A's 14, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
Backed by the Athletics' 19-hit attack, Catfish Hunter cruised to his 10th victory of the season, defeating the White Sox, 14-3. Dick Green led the A's with four hits, while Deron Johnson and Reggie Jackson each batted in three runs.

Royals 8, Rangers 7 at Kansas City (day game):
An action-packed ninth inning saw the Rangers score four runs to take a 7-4 lead and the Royals then come back with four runs to gain an 8-7 victory. Toby Harrah homered to start the Rangers' outburst and three other runs followed on a single by Alex Johnson, doubles by Rico Carty and Jeff Burroughs, a single by Jim Spencer and sacrifice fly by Ken Suarez. The Royals began their comeback with a run on a walk to Steve Hovley and singles by Cookie Rojas and Amos Otis. John Mayberry then doubled to drive in two runs, tying the score. A safe bunt by Ed Kirkpatrick and intentional pass to Lou Piniella then loaded the bases and brought up Paul Schaal, who singled to drive in the winning run.

Brewers 12, Indians 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers piled up eight runs in the first inning and breezed to a 12-3 victory over the Indians. The first five batters singled in succession for three runs to kayo Dick Tidrow. Brent Strom relieved and walked Darrell Porter to load the bases. Bob Coluccio followed with a two-run single. After an error reloaded the bases, Pedro Garcia hit a sacrifice fly and Dave May doubled to drive in the last two runs of the inning. Coluccio accounted for two more RBIs with a triple in the eighth.

Angels 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
With two out in the 11th inning, Jerry DaVanon singled and pinch-hitter Mike Epstein followed with a homer to give the Angels a 3-1 victory over the Twins.

Yankees 3, Tigers 2 at New York (day game):
A three-run homer by Bobby Murcer enabled the Yankees to defeat the Tigers, 3-2, and provided Sam McDowell with his second straight victory since being acquired from the Giants. Murcer's homer, coming after singles by Roy White and Matty Alou in the third inning, pinned Woodie Fryman with his seventh straight setback. McDowell gave up all five Tiger hits before yielding to Lindy McDaniel in the eighth inning.

[DH] Reds 4, Dodgers 1 (night game) / Dodgers 5, Reds 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Fred Norman came within one out of pitching his third straight shutout for the Reds, but the lefthander had to settle for a 4-1 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before the Dodgers came back to win the second game, 5-1. Norman's bid for another shutout was wrecked when Ron Cey homered for the Dodgers' run. Dan Driessen batted in two runs for the Reds with a single in the third. Joe Morgan homered in the eighth and Pete Rose knocked in a run with a single in the ninth. Tommy John pitched the nightcap for the Dodgers and allowed only three hits. Ken McMullen, who had been out of action except for four pinch-hitting appearances since suffering a back injury April 10, returned to the Dodgers' lineup when Cey hurt his throwing arm and smashed a three-run homer.

Phillies 7, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Ken Brett undoubtedly set a major league record for most homers by a pitcher in consecutive games, hitting his fourth in four straight starts, while hurling the Phillies to a 7-2 victory over the Expos. Mike Schmidt and Willie Montanez hit three-run homers for the Phillies, Schmidt's blow coming in the first inning. Brett connected for the circuit in the seventh and later in that same stanza Montanez rapped his round-tripper. A homer by Terry Humphrey accounted for the Expos' two tallies.

Pirates 3, Mets 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Manny Sanguillen with two out in the 10th inning provided the Pirates with a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Gene Clines singled with one away and took third on a single by Dave Cash. After Al Oliver lined out, the Mets walked Willie Stargell intentionally in a move that failed when Sanguillen cracked his single.

[DH] Padres 2, Braves 0 (night game) / Padres 9, Braves 3 at San Diego (night game):
Clay Kirby yielded only three hits in the first game and Rich Troedson, making his first start, combined with Vicente Romo on a six-hitter in the second game as the Padres defeated the Braves in a twi-night doubleheader, 2-0 and 9-3. Kirby struck out 13. Dave Roberts had five hits in six trips for the Padres in the twin bill. A single by Nate Colbert and double by Roberts accounted for the initial run in the sixth inning of the lidlifter. Rich Morales doubled and Gene Locklear singled for the other tally in the seventh. Colbert hit two homers for the Padres in the nightcap and Roberts added one. Rich Morales batted in two runs with a double. Troedson gave up the Braves' three runs in the first inning. Romo relieved in the sixth.

Astros 6, Giants 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Jerry Reuss put himself ahead to stay with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and was the winner with the help of Jim Ray when the Astros defeated the Giants, 6-3. The Astros scored their first three runs in the third. Reuss walked and Jim Wynn singled. After Roger Metzger forced Reuss at third, singles by Cesar Cedeno, Bob Watson and Tommy Helms were good for a run apiece. Helms singled, Skip Jutze doubled and Reuss singled for what proved to be the deciding run in sixth. Five straight singles added two clinching tallies to the Astros' total in the ninth.

Cardinals 3, Cubs 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals, who won only five of their first 25 games, finally climaxed their uphill battle and reached the .500 mark with a 33-33 record by defeating the Cubs, 3-2, in 11 innings. The Cubs forced the game into overtime with a run in the ninth on a double by Carmen Fanzone and single by Gene Hiser, but with two away in the 11th the Cardinals gained their victory with successive singles by Bernie Carbo, Jim Dwyer and Luis Melendez.
