Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Tigers 1 at Boston (night game):
A tie-breaking homer by Carlton Fisk in the eighth inning gave the Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the Tigers, who went down to their eighth straight defeat and fifth in a row by a margin of one run. The Tigers' lone tally came on a homer by Al Kaline in the fourth inning. The Red Sox tied the score with singles by Danny Cater, Luis Aparicio and Rick Miller in the fifth.

Angels 5, Royals 2 at California (night game):
Profiting from the wildness of Ken Wright, who walked eight batters in four innings, the Angels defeated the Royals, 5-2. Wright passed four to force a run home in the first. Walks to Rudy Meoli and Jeff Torborg with two out in the fourth paved the way for more Angel scoring. Sandy Alomar followed those passes with a single to drive in one run and Vada Pinson tripled to account for two more. Pinson added an insurance run with a single in the seventh. Nolan Ryan, who hurled the route for the Angels, also was wild, walking seven.

White Sox 3, Twins 2 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox scored three runs in the first inning and were able to defeat the Twins, 3-2, thanks to the clutch relief pitching of Cy Acosta. Singles by Pat Kelly and Jorge Orta, a double by Carlos May and single by Rick Reichardt accounted for the White Sox tallies. In the ninth, Terry Forster, pitching in relief for the White Sox, walked George Mitterwald, gave up a single by Larry Hisle and passed both Rod Carew and Jerry Terrell to force in the Twins' first run. Acosta, taking over, struck out Tony Oliva, but walked Bobby Darwin to force in the Twins' second run. However, Acosta then struck out Dan Monson and retired Joe Lis on a fly to save the game for starter Stan Bahnsen.

Indians 4, Yankees 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Chris Chambliss batted in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning, accounting for his first RBIs since May 25, to enable the Indians to defeat the Yankees, 4-2. The Indians, who stopped the Yankees' eight-game winning streak, started their scoring with two runs in the first inning on singles by Buddy Bell, Oscar Gamble, John Ellis and Charlie Spikes. Ellis doubled with one out in the sixth and Spikes and John Lowenstein walked to load the bases. Dave Duncan then grounded into a forceout at the plate before Chambliss came through with his decisive single. Thurman Munson homered for the Yankees.

Orioles 4, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Al Bumbry beat out a grounder to deep short for his fifth hit of the game and scored the Orioles' winning run in the 12th inning of a 4-3 victory over the Brewers. After reaching base, Bumbry advanced on a sacrifice by Rich Coggins, took third on a wild pitch by Frank Linzy and scored on an infield out by Tommy Davis. The Brewers picked up two runs in the fourth inning, but the Orioles tied the score with a single by Mark Belanger, triple by Bumbry and double by Coggins in the seventh. The Orioles went ahead with a double by Earl Williams and single by Brooks Robinson in the eighth, only to have Johnny Briggs tie the score with a homer in the Brewers' half.

Rangers 4, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
Although still weakened from a recent bout with the flu, Sonny Siebert pitched six scoreless innings on a yield of six hits and gained credit for the Rangers' 4-2 victory over the Athletics. Bill Gogolewski relieved in the seventh. The Rangers also had to call on both Mike Paul and Steve Foucault in the ninth when the A's scored their two runs. The Rangers rapped Ken Holtzman for three runs in the third on a single by Dave Nelson, pass to Toby Harrah, single by Alex Johnson and double by Jeff Burroughs. Harrah homered for the other run in the eighth.

Astros 13, Reds 2 at Houston (night game):
The Astros exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning and rolled to a 13-2 victory over the Reds. Cesar Cedeno, who singled in the first inning, stole second and scored on a single by Bob Watson, opened the sixth with a homer. A single by Watson, double by Lee May and error on a grounder by Doug Rader loaded the bases. Tommy Helms capitalized on the opportunity with a two-run double. Then, with two out, Jim Wynn walked to reload the sacks and Roger Metzger was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Cedeno walked to force in another. Watson then doubled to clear the bases and scored himself on a single by Rafael Batista. Bobby Tolan homered for the Reds' pair in the seventh, but Rader added three more runs to the Astros' total with a bases-loaded double in the eighth.

[DH] Pirates 8, Expos 6 (night game) / Pirates 3, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Richie Hebner drove in three runs with a double and homer in the first game and hit another homer in the second game as the Pirates defeated the Expos, 8-6 and 3-1, in a twi-night doubleheader. Rennie Stennett also had three RBIs for the Pirates in the lidlifter, hitting a triple and sacrifice fly. Hebner started the scoring in the nightcap with a homer in the second inning. The Expos came back with a run in their half on a double by Bob Bailey and single by Tim Foli, but Willie Stargell doubled and Manny Sanguillen singled to put the Pirates ahead again in the fourth and Al Oliver iced the verdict with a homer in the sixth.

Cubs 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
After being held to two hits in the first eight innings, the Cubs rallied for three runs in the ninth to defeat the Mets, 3-2. Ron Hodges singled with the bases loaded in the sixth to produce the Mets' markers. Jon Matlack, working on a shutout, ran into control problems in the ninth and was lifted after giving up a walk to Glenn Beckert, single by Billy Williams and pass to Jim Hickman to load the bases. Tug McGraw relieved and on his first pitch, Ron Santo doubled to drive in the tying tallies. After a walk to Jose Cardenal and forceout at the plate on a grounder by Randy Hundley, Don Kessinger came to bat and singled to score Santo with the winning run.

Phillies 7, Cardinals 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
After failing to hold a 5-0 lead, the Cardinals went down to defeat when Mike Rogodzinski hit a pinch-homer with a man on base in the eighth inning to carry the Phillies to a 7-6 victory. The Cardinals built up their lead with the aid of a two-run homer by Tim McCarver before the Phillies came back with three runs in the sixth. Mike Anderson then walked in the seventh, Cesar Tovar tripled and Denny Doyle singled to tie the score. The Cardinals went ahead again with a homer by Ted Simmons in the eighth, but in the Phillies' half Tommy Hutton singled and Rogodzinski delivered his winning blow.

Dodgers 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Ken McMullen hit his third homer in three games since returning to the Dodgers' lineup to help defeat the Padres, 3-2. McMullen's drive in the second inning broke a 1-1 tie and the Dodgers added an unearned run in the seventh for what proved to be the deciding marker. Steve Yeager was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored when Cito Gaston dropped a fly by Bill Buckner. Claude Osteen, with ninth-inning help from Jim Brewer, posted his seventh straight victory and 10th of the season.
