The Orioles tagged the veteran lefthander for three runs in the third inning on a single by Andy Etchebarren, pass to Mark Belanger and singles by Bobby Grich and Tommy Davis, together with an error by Johnny Callison on Davis' hit. Paul Blair singled and Don Baylor tripled for the deciding run in the sixth before the Orioles clinched their victory with two more runs in the eighth, one on a sacrifice fly by Baylor. Ray Culp, who started the opener for the Red Sox, retired nine straight batters before walking John Lowenstein in the fourth inning. After Oscar Gamble forced Lowenstein and George Hendrick was hit by a pitch, Ellis smashed his homer. Rico Petrocelli had a solo swat for the Red Sox. In the nlghtcap, the Red Sox attack included a two-run homer by Reggie Smith and bases-loaded triple by Bob Montgomery.
White Sox 2, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Luis Alvarado hit a two-run double in the second inning, after Carlos May and Hank Allen were safe on consecutive errors by shortstop Rudy Meoli, to enable the White Sox to defeat the Angels, 2-0. Tigers 8, Brewers 6 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Brewers, 8-6, for their fourth straight victory since clipping an eight-game losing streak.
