Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Bobby Darwin powered the Twins to a 4-0 victory over the Angels behind the pitching of Bert Blyleven, who posted his sixth shutout of the season. Nolan Ryan matched Blyleven in their duel until falling victim to Darwin's blow in the eighth inning. George Mitterwald walked to open the stanza and Jim Holt, attempting to sacrifice, beat out a bunt. Rod Carew struck out and Jerry Terrell forced Holt, but Tony Oliva walked to set the stage for Darwin's slam.

Orioles 9, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Orioles smashed four homers, including two by Earl Williams, to back up the pitching of Doyle Alexander in a 9-2 victory over the Tigers. Boog Powell hit for the circuit to account for two of the Orioles' three runs in the first inning. Williams homered in the fourth and Al Bumbry added a round-tripper with a man on base. Williams then hit his second drive with two aboard in the seventh, giving him 10 homers for the season, but these were his first two in games on the road.

Yankees 7, Indians 2 at New York (night game):
Bobby Murcer, who had been vociferous in complaints that Gaylord Perry threw a "greaseball," smashed a two-run homer off the Indians' righthander to help the Yankees gain a 7-2 victory. Roy White connected for two round-trippers, starting the Yankee scoring with a drive in the fourth inning. Matty Alou then beat out an infield hit and Murcer followed with a homer. The Yankees proceeded to add three more runs on a bases-loaded double by Gene Michael before the inning ended. White hit his second homer of the game in the seventh.

White Sox 4, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Coming out of the bullpen with the potential tying run on base, Cy Acosta struck out Joe Rudi for the final out to enable the White Sox to emerge with a 4-3 victory over the Athletics. The White Sox scored twice in the second inning on three singles, a passed ball and sacrifice fly and added a tally in the third on three more singles. After the A's picked up a run in the third on a single by Bert Campaneris and double by Sal Bando, Ed Herrmann homered in the eighth to supply what proved to be the deciding run for the White Sox. In the ninth, with one out, Bando knocked in two runs with a double for his fourth hit of the game. After Reggie Jackson flied out, Acosta fanned Rudi to save the game.

Rangers 3, Royals 0 at Texas (night game):
Jim Bibby gained his first A. L victory and did it with a flourish when the Rangers' righthander pitched a one-hitter and defeated the Royals, 3-0. Fran Healy doubled in the sixth inning for the Royals' only safety. Bibby had lost his first two decisions with the Rangers after previously compiling a 1-5 record with the Cardinals.

Dodgers 12, Braves 9 at Atlanta (night game):
Although the Braves smashed five homers, including the 693rd of Hank Aaron's career, the Dodgers were able to gain a 12-9 victory in 12 innings. The Braves scored eight runs on their circuit clouts. A three-run drive by Mike Lum and solo swat by Carl Morton gave the Braves a 5-4 lead in the fifth and Aaron added two more with his round-tripper in the sixth. The Dodgers then broke loose for their second four-run burst of the game to go ahead, 8-7, in the seventh, but Darrell Evans homered with two out in the ninth to tie the score. The Dodgers counted in the 10th on a double by Willie Davis and an error, only to have the Braves pull even again with a boundary belt by Davey Johnson. However, there was no getting back at the Dodgers after they scored three runs in the 12th on a double by Ron Cey, passes to Willie Crawford and Lee Lacy and singles by Bill Russell and Chris Cannizzaro.

Cubs 4, Mets 3 at Chicago (day game):
After an exchange of homers sent the game into overtime, the Cubs scored on a bases-loaded single by Jose Cardenal with one out in the 10th to defeat the Mets, 4-3. Adrian Garrett, subbing for Billy Williams, who was suffering from sore back muscles, homered in the seventh inning to put the Cubs ahead, 2-1. Ken Boswell, batting for Tom Seaver, tied the score with a round-tripper in the eighth and John Milner sent the Mets in front with another circuit clout in the ninth. However, in the Cubs' half, Gene Hiser hit his first major league homer to tie the score again. In the 10th, a single by Don Kessinger and passes to Williams, pinch-hitting, and Rick Monday loaded the bases. Glenn Beckert grounded into a forceout at the plate, but Cardenal then came through with the winning hit.

Reds 4, Padres 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
With two out in the seventh inning, the Reds exploded for four runs on homers by Pete Rose and Johnny Bench to defeat the Padres, 4-0. Jack Billingham, who pitched the shutout, gained his 10th victory. Rich Troedson, starting for the Padres, was lifted after six innings, according to pre-game plans, and Mike Corkins, who relieved, was the victim of the Reds' blows. Rose's homer came on an inside-the-park drive that hit the right-center field fence and caromed away from the Padres' flychasers. Then, after Joe Morgan was hit by a pitch and Dan Driessen walked, Bench iced the game with a three-run blast.

Giants 14, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Sidelined by a pulled muscle in his right shoulder, Bobby Bonds came off the bench and hit a grand-slam homer in the seventh inning to spark the Giants to a 14-3 victory over the Astros. The Giants were losing, 3-1, when Gary Matthews and Chris Speier singled and Dave Rader was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Bonds' smash off Jim Ray, who had just taken the mound in relief for the Astros. Having gone ahead, the Giants broke the game wide open by scoring nine runs in the ninth, with Gary Thomasson, Matthews, Garry Maddox and Speier driving in two apiece. Speier's RBIs came on a homer.

Pirates 4, Expos 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The six-hit pitching of Bob Moose, who retired 15 straight batters at one stretch of his performance, enabled the Pirates to defeat the Expos, 4-0. The Pirates staked Moose to a lead in the first inning with a run on a walk to Manny Sanguillen and a double by Willie Stargell. Three other runs came in the seventh when Gene Alley walked and Vic Davalillo, Sanguillen and Al Oliver hit singles.

Cardinals 2, Phillies 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals, who escaped defeat on an unearned run in the eighth inning, proceeded to beat the Phillies, 2-1, when Luis Melendez delivered a run-scoring single as a pinch-hitter with two out in the 10th. The Phillies counted their tally in the fourth on a double by Cesar Tovar and triple by Greg Luzlnski, scoring pinch-runner Mike Rogodzinski. In the eighth, Ted Sizemore singled and when Wayne Twitchell threw wildly to first on a bunt by Tim McCarver, both runners were safe. After a grounder by Joe Torre, Ted Simmons was passed intentionally. Jose Cruz forced Simmons, but beat the throw to first in the Phillies' try for a double play, allowing Sizemore to score. In the 10th, with Mac Scarce on the mound for the Phillies, Sizemore walked and McCarver sacrificed. Torre was handed an intentional pass and was forced by Simmons before Melendez batted for Cruz and won the game with a single.
