Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 7, Indians 5 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers first used Frank Howard and then switched to Gates Brown as their designated hitter and each hit a two-run homer in a 7-5 victory over the Indians. Brown delivered the winning blow, connecting for the circuit after a single by Bill Freehan in the 11th inning. The Indians took a 4-0 lead with the aid of round-trippers by John Ellis and Buddy Bell before Howard provided the Tigers' first two runs with his homer in the fourth. After the Indians picked up a run in the sixth, the Tigers tied the score in their half on a walk to Aurelio Rodriguez with the bases loaded and two-run double by Ed Brinkman. Bob Miller was the winner in relief, allowing only one hit in the last 5 1/3 innings.

Royals 12, Twins 10 at Minnesota (night game):
Cookie Rojas drove in five runs, including three with a homer, to pace the Royals to a 12-10 victory in a slugfest with the Twins. The Royals scored four runs in the third inning, two on a double by Rojas and two on another double by John Mayberry. Freddie Patek batted in two runs with a single in the sixth before Rojas hit his homer. The Royals then added three runs in the eighth, two counting on a single by Lou Piniella, to enable them to stand off a late rush by the Twins, who scored eight runs in the last four frames. Larry Hisle had four hits, including a two-run homer.

Red Sox 9, Yankees 4 at New York (day game):
Carl Yastrzemski started the fourth inning with a homer and capped a seven-run outburst with a single, leading the Red Sox to a 9-4 victory over the Yankees. After Yastrzemski's homer tied the score at 1-1, singles by Orlando Cepeda, Carlton Fisk and Dwight Evans sent the Red Sox ahead. Following a pass to Luis Aparicio, Rick Miller delivered a two-run single. Two more scored on a double by Reggie Smith and then Yastrzemski, batting for the second time in the stanza, singled to drive in Smith.

Rangers 7, White Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers, after taking a 2-1 lead, broke away with five runs in the fourth inning to defeat the White Sox, 7-2. Larry Biittner and Pete Mackanin walked and Bill Sudakis singled to load the bases. Ken Suarez came through with a two-run single and three runs followed on a single by Dave Nelson, pass to Vic Harris, single by Alex Johnson and sacrifice fly by Rico Carty. Jim Bibby, who beat the White Sox, 2-1, on July 3, pitched the last two innings in relief and saved the game for Sonny Siebert.

Braves 7, Astros 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Although tagged for two homers, Roric Harrison allowed only three other hits and pitched the Braves to a 7-4 victory over the Astros. The Braves backed Harrison with three circuit clouts. Davey Johnson connected with two men on base in the second inning. After Dusty Baker added two runs with a double in the third, Darrell Evans homered in the fifth and Mike Lum followed suit in the seventh. The Astros' round-trippers were hit by Tommie Agee and Doug Rader.

Phillies 7, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Steve Carlton survived trouble in the eighth inning and turned in his first complete game since June 8 as the Phillies defeated the Cubs, 7-4. The Phillies roughed up Rick Reuschel for three runs in the second on four singles and a double by Bill Robinson. Greg Luzinski homered in the third, hitting safely in his 15th straight game. The Phillies added a tally in the fifth and capped their scoring with a two-run homer by Robinson in the sixth. In Cariton's shaky stanza, the Cubs scored three unearned runs on a single by Billy Williams, a passed ball, a wild throw by Mike Schmidt after fielding a grounder by Ron Santo, triple by Jim Hickman and single by Carmen Fanzone.

Reds 4, Giants 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
A single by Dave Concepcion in the ninth inning for his fifth straight hit of the game drove in Don Gullett and brought the Reds a 4-3 victory over the Giants. Gullett, who was the winner in relief, beat out an infield hit with one away. Pete Rose followed with a single. After Joe Morgan struck out, Concepcion came through with his game-ending hit. The Giants scored two runs on a homer by Bobby Bonds in the fifth and added one on a circuit clout by Chris Speier in the sixth before the Reds rallied to tie the score in their half of the sixth. A walk to Rose and singles by Morgan and Concepcion produced the first tally. Then, after a pass to Johnny Bench, Tony Perez hit a two-run double.

Padres 3, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers collected only two hits off Steve Arlin and suffered their sixth straight defeat, losing to the Padres, 3-0. The shutout was Arlin's second in succession. Claude Osteen, who went into the game with eight straight victories to his credit, was stopped on his streak. The Padres began the scoring with a run in the second inning on singles by Cito Gaston and Dave Winfield and an infield out by Rich Morales. Derrel Thomas walked and Dave Roberts doubled for another run in the third before Fred Kendall wound up the scoring with a homer in the sixth.

Mets 7, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Sparked by Rusty Staub, the Mets defeated the Expos, 7-3, to end a four-game losing streak. The Expos scored their runs in the first inning, two on a homer by Bob Bailey, but all three were unearned as the result of an error by Wayne Garrett. Staub started the Mets' comeback with a homer in the fourth. The Mets then erupted for five runs in the seventh. Staub singled with the bases loaded to drive in the tying pair. A single by George Theodore added another run and, after a wild pitch, Garrett knocked in two with a single.

Pirates 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Richie Hebner drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the first inning and then hit a tie-breaking homer in the sixth to give the Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals.
