Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] A's 7, Orioles 5 (night game) / Orioles 5, A's 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Although hitting three homers, the Orioles lost the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 7-5, but two more circuit clouts beat the Athletics in the second game, 5-3. After Al Bumbry homered for the Orioles in the first inning of the opener, the A's built up a 7-1 lead with the aid of four RBIs by Dick Green, who hit a double and single. Boog Powell hit a two-run homer for the Orioles in the sixth and Brooks Robinson led off the seventh with a round-tripper. The Orioles went on to add another run before Rollie Fingers came in to save the game for the A's. In the nightcap, homers by Bill North and Deron Johnson put the A's in front, 3-2, but Robinson doubled in the seventh inning and Merv Rettenmund and Enos Cabell followed with successive boundary belts to give the Orioles their victory.

Red Sox 5, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Reggie Smith hit a double and two singles and reached the 1,000 hit total for his career as the Red Sox ripped into Wilbur Wood to defeat the White Sox, 5-2. Smith scored one run and drove in another. Carlton Fisk homered in the ninth inning.

Indians 8, Angels 7 at Cleveland (night game):
A single by Charlie Spikes with the bases loaded in the 11th inning ended a three-hour, seven-minute game with the Indians defeating the Angels, 11-7. The Indians built up a 6-0 lead with the aid of triples by Spikes and Chris Chambliss before Bob Oliver homered for the Angels in the seventh. The Indians came back with a run in their half, but the Angels rallied to tie the score with six runs on seven singles in the ninth. Buddy Bell opened the 11th for the Indians with a single and when Walt Williams bunted, both runners were safe on a late throw to second in an attempted forceout. Following a sacrifice by George Hendrick, John Ellis was passed intentionally to load the bases for Spikes.

Royals 12, Tigers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Amos Otis rapped a homer and three singles to lead the Royals' 20-hit attack in a 12-1 walloping of the Tigers. The Royals scored their first five runs off Joe Coleman, who was knocked out in the second inning. Kurt Bevacqua plated a pair with a double. With Fred Scherman on the mound in the sixth, the Royals erupted for four more runs. Cookie Rojas singled and Otis and John Mayberry followed with consecutive homers. Lou Piniella then tripled and Gail Hopkins singled. The Tigers' only run off Steve Busby came in the ninth on a walk, two singles and an infield out by Jim Northrup.

Rangers 5, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Homers by Jeff Burroughs and Bill Sudakis among six hits off Jim Colborn enabled the Rangers to beat the Brewers, 5-2. Jim Merritt, who was the winner, gave up eight hits, but the Brewers' only runs scored on a double by Don Money and homer by George Scott in the first inning. Sudakis cut into the Brewers' lead with his circuit clout in the third and the Rangers then went ahead with three runs in the fourth on a pass to Vic Harris, single by Alex Johnson, sacrifice fly by Rico Carty and Burroughs' homer. Dick Billings knocked in the last tally with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Yankees 5, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Designated hitter Jim Ray Hart homered with two men on base to cap a five-run rally in the eighth inning that brought the Yankees a 5-2 victory over the Twins. Felipe Alou singled, Gene Michael was safe on an error by Jerry Terrell and Roy White doubled to produce the Yankees' first run. Bobby Murcer singled to tie the score at 2-2 and Hart followed with his game-winning homer.

Dodgers 3, Pirates 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers snapped their six-game losing streak behind the pitching of Don Sutton, who defeated the Pirates, 3-2, for his 10th victory. Bill Buckner was hit by a pitch in the first inning and scored the Dodgers' initial run on a double by Willie Davis. Ron Cey walked in the sixth, stole second, moved to third on an infield out and counted on a single by Willie Crawford. The Dodgers added what proved to be the winning run in the seventh. Davey Lopes singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a single by Buckner. Sutton had a shutout in the works until the ninth when the Pirates scored on a single by Al Oliver, double by Manny Sanguillen and single by Dave Cash.

[DH] Expos 12, Astros 8 (night game) / Expos 14, Astros 6 at Montreal (night game):
John Boccabella tied a major league record with two homers in one inning, including a grand slam, as the Expos piled up a 12-8 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader before crushing the Astros again in the nightcap, 14-6. Boccabella accomplished his feat in the sixth inning when the Expos scored eight runs to wipe out a 7-4 deficit. After Boccabella led off against Jim Ray with a homer, the Expos scored three more runs before Boccabella returned to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped into Jim Crawford for his grand slam. In the second game, Ron Fairly took over the slugger's role with two round-trippers, driving in three runs. Bob Bailey hit three singles and also accounted for three RBIs. Mike Marshall relieved in both games and was credited with his 14th and 15th saves.

Braves 2, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Ron Schueler, making only his third start for the Braves since being promoted from the bullpen, pitched eight hitless innings and then settled for a two-hitter in a 2-0 victory over the Mets. Ron Hodges, who was the Mets' only previous baserunner, drawing a walk in the third inning, wrecked Schueler's bid with a single to open the ninth. Then, after two out, Felix Millan also singled before Ken Boswell flied out to end the game. Dck Dietz provided the scoring support that Schueler needed, hitting a homer off Jerry Koosman in the seventh after Dusty Baker had reached base with a single.

Reds 8, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
After giving up two runs in the first two innings, Fred Norman pitched scoreless ball the rest of the route while the Reds broke away to defeat the Phillies, 8-2. Mike Schmidt homered for one of the Phillies' runs. Bobby Tolan hit a homer and run-scoring single to effect a 2-2 tie before the Reds took command with two runs in the sixth on a single by Dan Driessen, pass to Tolan and double by Dave Concepcion. Tony Perez homered in the eighth and, after a single by Tolan, Bill Plummer also hit for the circuit. Pete Rose tripled in the ninth and counted the Reds' last run on a sacrifice fly by Joe Morgan.

Cubs 8, Padres 5 at San Diego (night game):
Rick Monday hit a grand-slam homer and drove in two more runs with a single to carry the Cubs to an 8-5 victory over the Padres. With the support of Monday's power, Fergie Jenkins beat the Padres for the 13th straight time without a defeat since the expansion club entered the N. L. in 1969. Monday connected for his homer off Clay Kirby in the fifth inning after singles by Adrian Garrett and Paul Popovich and a pass to Jenkins.

Cardinals 3, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Bob Gibson tied Juan Marichal for most victories among active pitchers, gaining his eighth of the season and 233rd of his career as the Cardinals defeated the Giants, 3-2. Jim Barr, who started for the Giants, retired the first 15 batters before Bernie Carbo homered in the sixth inning. The Giants matched that run in their half on singles by Dave Rader and Bobby Bonds around a sacrifice by Barr. The Cards came back with two runs in the seventh on a single by Ted Sizemore, forceout by Joe Torre, single by Ted Simmons and double by Jose Cruz. The Giants fell short with a run in the eighth. Rader was hit by a pitch and, after a single by Jim Howarth, scored on two infield outs.
