Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Angels 3 at Baltimore (night game):
An error by Richie Scheinblum that resulted in three unearned runs enabled the Orioles to defeat the Angels, 5-3. The Angels' 3-1 lead was wiped out when the right fielder dropped a line drive by Bobby Grich, allowing two runs to score. Grich reached third on the error and crossed the plate with the leading run on a single by Tommy Davis. The Orioles added an insurance counter when Brooks Robinson walked in the sixth and scored from first base on a double by Andy Etchebarren.

White Sox 4, Yankees 3 at Chicago (night game):
In a rally against Sparky Lyle, the White Sox scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 4-3. Luis Alvarado beat out an infield hit, took third on a single by Buddy Bradford and beat the throw home when Jorge Orta grounded to Horace Clarke. Eddie Leon struck out, but Pat Kelly then singled to drive in the winning run. As a result, Wilbur Wood was able to continue his mastery of the Yankees, beating them for the eighth straight time in a string that started on July 28, 1971.

Rangers 9, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
Batting for the first time in the game after coming into the lineup as the Rangers' 17th player, Jim Mason homered with a man on base in the 12th inning to defeat the Tigers, 9-7. The Tigers had homers by Jim Northrup, Gates Brown and Willie Horton in scoring all their runs off Steve Dunning. Jim Kremmel, Jackie Brown and Bill Gogolewski pitched scoreless relief for the Rangers in the last 7 2/3 innings with the victory going to Gogolewski, his first of the season. The Rangers, after falling behind, 7-4, picked up two runs on a homer by Bill Sudakis in the seventh inning and tied the score in the eighth after a single by Vic Harris, who became the first Ranger player to collect five hits in one game. Harris took third on a single by Alex Johnson and beat the throw home to score on Rico Carty's grounder to Norm Cash.

Royals 13, Brewers 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
Pinch-hitting, Kurt Bevacqua came through with the first grand-slam homer of his major league career to spark the Royals to a 13-6 victory over the Brewers. John Mayberry and Gail Hopkins singled and Ed Kirkpatrick walked to load the bases in the fifth inning before Bevacqua batted for Paul Schaal and connected for his homer off Jerry Bell. Bevacqua remained in the game at third base and added two more RBIs with a single in the sixth.

Red Sox 2, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Rico Petrocelli hit a two-run homer in the second inning to enable the Red Sox to defeat the Twins, 2-0, behind the pitching of Bill Lee, who posted his first shutout of the season.

Reds 11, Expos 6 at Montreal (night game):
A grand-slam homer by pinch-hitter Hal King climaxed a seven-run outburst in the sixth inning as the Reds defeated the Expos, 11-6. Six Expos' pitchers set a club record of 15 walks. The Reds passed 10 and the two-club total of 25 walks set a new N. L. record. With the score tied, 4-4, the Reds opened the sixth by loading the bases on two walks and an error on a bunt by Denis Menke. Johnny Bench hit a sacrifice fly. After another pass filled the sacks again, Bobby Tolan hit a two-run single. A walk reloaded the bases for the third time and King, batting for Ed Sprague, followed with his grand slam off Pat Jarvis.

Mets 2, Astros 1 at New York (night game):
Two pinch-hitters, Beauchamp and Mays, came through to enable Mets to defeat Astros in 12 innings, 2-1. May homered for Astros' run in seventh. Beauchamp saved Mets from defeat, driving in tying run with single in ninth. Mays batted for Capra with one out in 12th and singled. After taking second on infield out by Garrett, Mays scored on single by Millan.

Braves 6, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
After a pinch-homer by Paul Casanova tied the score in the ninth inning, the Braves erupted for three runs in the 10th with pinch-hitter Norm Miller providing a key double to defeat the Phillies, 6-3. Homers by Willie Montanez and Bill Robinson helped the Phillies take a 3-1 lead, but Steve Carlton blew that advantage in the ninth when Johnny Oates walked and Casanova hit his first homer of the season. Barry Lersch was the loser in relief in the 10th. Pinch-hitter Frank Tepedino walked and, after a sacrifice, Oates was passed intentionally. Miller then batted for Tom House and doubled to drive in the tie-breaking tally. Two extra runs followed on an infield hit by Ralph Garr and sacrifice fly by Marty Perez.
