Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 6, Rangers 5 at Boston (day game):
After failing to hold a 4-0 lead, the Red Sox scored twice in the eighth inning on a single by Luis Aparicio, triple by Carl Yastrzemski and single by Orlando Cepeda to defeat the Rangers, 6-5. Tommy Harper homered for the Red Sox in the first. Three more runs followed in the second, two counting on a double by Doug Griffin. The Rangers caught up at 4-4 with the aid of a two-run homer by Bill Sudakis. After the Red Sox broke the tie, the Rangers fell short with one run in the ninth on singles by Dave Nelson, Vic Harris and Alex Johnson.
Orioles 5, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
Managerial juggling worked out to the advantage of the Orioles when Bob Reynolds saved a 5-4 victory over the White Sox by inducing Joe Keough to ground into a double play with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. The Orioles built up a 5-1 lead with the aid of a homer by Paul Blair before the White Sox kayoed Jim Palmer with a homer by Bill Melton, double by Ken Buddy Henderson and run-scoring single by Bradford. Grant Jackson, relieving, gave up singles by Luis Alvarado and Jorge Orta for another run. Leon then sacrificed and Pat Kelly was passed intentionally to load the bases. When Johnny Jeter was sent up to bat for Tony Muser, the Orioles brought Reynolds to the mound. Keough then batted for Jeter and hit into a DP.
Tigers 2, Angels 1 at Detroit (day game):
Two consecutive wild pitches by Dave Sells with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Rudy Meoli hit his first major league homer to account for the Angels' runs in the second. Rudy May started for the Angels and gave up a single by Ike Brown in the ninth for the 10th hit off his deliveries. After one out, Willie Horton walked and Jim Northrup ran for him. Ed Brinkman forced Northrup for the second out. Mickey Stanley walked on four pitches to load the bases. Sells, taking over in relief, threw his first wild pitch with Gates Brown at bat, allowing Ike Brown to score. After an intentional pass to Brown reloaded the bases, Sells uncorked another wild pitch on his first delivery to Al Kaline and Brinkman crossed the plate.
Brewers 5, A's 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Colborn pitched a three-hitter and Bobby Mitchell and Ollie Brown smashed homers as the Brewers defeated the Athletics, 5-1. Mitchell's homer in the second inning accounted for three runs, coming after a single by Johnny Briggs and pass to Pedro Garcia. The A's avoided a shutout when Ray Fosse hit for the circuit in the sixth.
Indians 3, Twins 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Dick Tidrow scattered four hits and pitched the Indians to a 3-0 victory over the Twins. The Indians scored one run off Jim Kaat on a pass to Charlie Spikes and singles by Chris Chambliss and Frank Duffy in the second inning and added their other pair when Chambliss walked and Rusty Torres homered in the seventh.
Royals 4, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
Cookie Rojas smashed a homer, triple and single, accounting for half of the Royals' six hits, in a 4-2 victory over the Yankees. Rojas hit his homer off Doc Medich in the first inning and then singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Ed Kirkpatrick in the fourth. The Royals added their two other runs in the seventh on a double by Lou Piniella, pass to Kurt Bevacqua, a sacrifice, wild pitch and Rojas' triple.
Mets 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Mets broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Reds, 5-2. Jerry Grote led off with a triple and gave way to pinch-runner Ted Martinez, who scored on a passed ball by Johnny Bench on a 3-2 pitch to Duffy Dyer, who reached first safely. Dyer was out trying for third on a single by Wayne Garrett, but Felix Millan followed with a homer for the final two runs. The Reds had a circuit clout by Andy Kosco.
Dodgers 7, Cubs 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers drew 53,870, their largest crowd since June 28, 1970, and entertained the throng with a 7-3 victory over the Cubs in a game that saw Al Downing get off to a wild start and then strike out seven batters in succession. The Cubs, who had had not scored against Dodger pitching for 29 innings, ended their drouth in the first when Downing walked two batters, hit another and uncorked a wild pitch. The veteran lefthander then pulled himself together and went on his strikeout streak. The Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the second on a run-scoring double by Ron Cey and an error. Cey accounted for another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third. Bill Russell added a run with a single and Downing then assured himself of victory with a double, driving in two runs. Joe Ferguson added the Dodgers' final tally with a homer in the fourth.
Phillies 7, Astros 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton smashed a two-run homer to go along with his three-hit pitching as the Phillies defeated the Astros, 7-0. Greg Luzinski also hit a homer.
Cardinals 5, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Ken Reitz and Bill Stein batted in all of the Cardinals' runs between them to defeat the Padres, 5-3. Reitz homered with two men on base in the second inning. The Padres came back to tie the score with the aid of round-trippers by Nate Colbert and Jerry Morales, but the Cardinals broke the deadlock in the eighth when Luis Melendez and Reitz singled and Stein drove them home with a double.
Pirates 7, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The Pirates exploded for six runs in the second inning and with a big lead, Rooker pitched the route for the first time this season and registered a 7-2 victory over the Giants. Rennie Stennett and Manny Sanguillen hit two-run singles during the outburst and Al Oliver belted a homer with a man on base. Oliver added another run with a double in the ninth. A double by Gary Thomasson and single by Chris Speier produced one run for the Giants in the fifth and Gary Matthews hit a homer in the sixth.
Braves 4, Expos 1 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves collected only five hits, including a homer by Darrell Evans, but bunched them in the fourth inning to defeat the Expos, 4-1. Marty Perez singled for the first hit off Balor Moore and Evans followed with his homer. A double by Hank Aaron and singles by Dusty Baker and Dick Dietz added another run. Baker then scored when Johnny Oates hit into a forceout. The Braves got even tighter pitching from Roric Harrison and Gary Gentry. Harrison gave up only two hits in six innings and Gentry, who had just been reactivated, allowed one hit in the last three frames to get credit for his first save.
