Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, White Sox 8 at Boston (night game):
Reggie Smith, who had been out of action for 10 days with a leg injury, made a smashing return to the Red Sox lineup by hitting two homers, his second drive coming in the 11th inning to beat the White Sox, 9-8. Smith's first homer came with a man on base in the first inning. The Red Sox also had a three-run clout by Tommy Harper, while Johnny Jeter, Ken Henderson and Ed Herrmann rapped round-trippers for the White Sox. Herrmann's homer with a man on base in the ninth inning sent the game into overtime.

Indians 9, Angels 8 at California (night game):
In an action-packed finish, the Indians staved off the Angels, 9-8. The Indians held a 6-1 lead after seven innings. Three of their runs were unearned and two others came on a homer by John Lowenstein. The Angels began their comeback with a three-run homer by Bob Oliver in the eighth. The Indians matched that with three runs in the ninth, including a round-tripper by John Ellis with a man on base. The Angels then staged a storm in their half of the ninth and scored four runs, three crossing the plate on a homer by Frank Robinson, before their rally fell short.

Royals 10, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Paul Schaal and Amos Otis batted in three runs apiece, each having a homer among his hits, to lead the Royals to a 10-2 victory over Tigers. A two-run homer by Norm Cash saved the Tigers from being shut out at the hands of Dick Drago.

Orioles 7, A's 5 at Oakland (night game):
Celebrating his selection to the All-Star team, Brooks Robinson hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the Orioles to a 7-5 victory over the Athletics. Robinson's blow made a winner out of Don Hood, who pitched four scoreless innings in relief in his first appearance since coming up from Rochester (International). Al Bumbry also homered for the Orioles. The A's scored all their runs off Jesse Jefferson. Gene Tenace and Sal Bando each homered with a man on base.

Braves 8, Mets 6 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves, who were losing, 6-3, erupted for five runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Mets, 8-6. A walk to Chuck Goggin and singles by Ralph Garr and Marty Perez produced the first run of the rally. After Jerry Koosman threw late to third on a bunt by Darrell Evans, loading the bases, Buzz Capra relieved and passed Hank Aaron to force in Garr. Dusty Baker doubled, driving in two runs, and Sonny Jackson capped the outburst with a sacrifice fly.

Reds 1, Phillies 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds' acquisition of Fred Norman from the Padres continued to pay dividends when the lefthander defeated the Phillies, 1-0. The shutout was Norman's third and the victory was his sixth against two losses since donning a Cincy uniform. The Reds beat Ken Brett on an unearned run in the sixth inning. Bill Plummer led off with a double. When Norman bunted, Brett threw to third in time to nail Plummer, but Mike Schmidt dropped the ball and the runner was safe. Pete Rose then hit a double.

Astros 6, Expos 5 at Houston (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Tommy Helms with the bases loaded in the 10th inning scored Bob Watson and brought the Astros a 6-5 victory over the Expos. Ken Singleton hit a three-run homer for the Expos in the ninth to tie the score. Watson doubled in the 10th. When Doug Rader bunted, Tom Walker threw late to third and both runners were safe. An intentional pass to Lee May loaded the bases to set the stage for Helms' fly.

Dodgers 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A homer by Willie Crawford in the second inning enabled Don Sutton to pitch the Dodgers to a 1-0 victory over the Pirates.

Cardinals 3, Giants 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Bob Gibson allowed only five hits and pitched the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Giants with batting support from Joe Torre and Bernie Carbo. Torre homered in the fourth inning and Carbo followed suit in the fifth. Lou Brock singled in the eighth, Ted Sizemore sacrificed and Torre singled to drive in the winning run. Bobby Bonds had a single and drew three walks for the Giants and scored both their runs.
