Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 3, Twins 2 at Boston (day game):
Continuing his hot hitting, Tommy Harper smashed a homer and then broke a tie with an infield single in the eighth inning to enable the Red Sox to defeat the Twins, 3-2. Rico Petrocelli also homered for the Red Sox, while Jim Holt batted in the Twins' runs with a homer and single. In the eighth, Rick Miller beat out a bunt, moved to second on a single by Doug Griffin, advanced to third on an infield out by Mario Guerrero and scored on Harper's grounder deep into the hole between third and short.
Orioles 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Designated hitter Tommy Davis came through with the winning single in the ninth inning when the Orioles scored three runs to defeat the Angels, 5-3. Leroy Stanton put the Angels ahead, 3-2, with a homer in the eighth. The Orioles loaded the bases in the ninth on a walk to Mark Belanger, single by Merv Rettenmund and safe bunt by Paul Blair. Davis then hit his single, driving in two runs, and an extra tally subsequently followed on a sacrifice fly by Don Baylor.
Royals 5, Brewers 4 at Kansas City (night game):
A stolen base by Cookie Rojas in the fifth inning led to the run that provided the Royals with a 5-4 victory over the Brewers. A crowd of 36,032 turned out for the game to watch the inauguration of owner Ewing Kauffman's water display, which cost $750,000 to build. Fran Healy hit a two-run homer for the Royals in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie. Rojas singled in the fifth, moved up on an infield out by Amos Otis and swiped third. After a pass to John Mayberry, Rojas scored what proved to be the winning run when Rick Reichardt forced Mayberry. The Brewers fell short with their final two runs in the eighth on a homer by Bob Coluccio with a man on base.
A's 5, Indians 2 at Oakland (day game):
Vida Blue was tagged for homers by Rusty Torres and George Hendrick, but the Athletics' southpaw allowed only one other hit and beat the Indians, 5-2. Bill North hit two singles, stole two bases and scored twice for the A's, whose attack also included homers by Bert Campaneris and Ray Fosse.
Rangers 4, Tigers 3 at Texas (night game):
David Clyde pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Rangers and allowed only six hits and three runs, but Jackie Brown was the winner in relief when Jeff Burroughs homered in the eighth to defeat the Tigers, 4-3. Alex Johnson also had a homer for the Rangers. Al Kaline rapped three doubles for the Tigers, driving in one run. Kaline was on base with a double when Bill Freehan homered to tie the score in the seventh.
Phillies 8, Braves 4 at Atlanta (day game):
Hank Aaron hit the 700th homer of his career, only 14 away from Babe Ruth's record, but the Braves nevertheless lost to the Phillies, 8-4. Aaron's smash with a man on base in the third inning came off Ken Brett and put the Braves ahead, 4-2. However, the Phillies wiped out their deficit with three runs in the sixth, two scoring on a single by Jose Pagan. Bob Boone homered in the ninth when the Phillies added three runs to ice their victory.
Giants 3, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
After eight shutout innings, Jim Barr worked out of a jam in the ninth and pitched the Giants to a 3-1 victory over the Cubs. The Giants started the scoring with a run in the first on a single by Garry Maddox and double by Willie McCovey. Dave Kingman homered in the fourth and the Giants' other run counted on a sacrifice fly by Dave Rader with the bases loaded in the sixth. The Cubs staged their threat in the ninth with one out when Jose Cardenal singled, Jim Hickman walked and Adrain Garrett singled to drive in Cardenal, but Barr retired Carmen Fanzone on a fly and struck out Don Kessinger to end the game.
Reds 6, Expos 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Doubles by Pete Rose and Dan Driessen with two out in the eighth inning produced three runs and carried the Reds to a 6-4 victory over the Expos. Steve Renko, pitching for the Expos, had a 4-3 lead and had retired 18 batters in a row before ending his string by walking Hal King with two away in the eighth. Darrel Chaney ran for King and scored the tying run on Rose's double. After an intentional pass to Joe Morgan, Driessen hit his double to drive in the winning pair.
Mets 5, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Rusty Staub drove in a run with a double and scored himself in the third inning and then singled in the seventh when the Mets counted two more runs to defeat the Astros, 5-3. John Milner hit a sacrifice fly in the third and batted in the Mets' last run with a single in the ninth. Doug Rader had his second straight two-homer game for the Astros and drove in all of their runs.
Cardinals 8, Dodgers 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Breaking a close game apart, the Cardinals erupted for six runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Dodgers, 8-1. Joe Torre homered with a man on base in the first before the Dodgers picked up their only run off Bob Gibson in the sixth on singles by Don Sutton and Davey Lopes and a sacrifice fly by Bill Buckner. The Cards started the seventh by loading the bases on a single by Torre, a hit batsman and a walk. Jose Cruz drove in two runs with a double to kayo Sutton. Mike Tyson singled off George Culver to drive in two more tallies. After a forceout by Gibson and pass to Lou Brock, the Cardinals' last two runs counted on a double by Tim McCarver and a wild pitch.
