[DH] Orioles 9, Indians 0 (night game) / Orioles 5, Indians 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Jim Palmer pitched his second one-hitter of the season to win the first game, 9-0, and the Orioles added a 5-2 victory in the second game to complete a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Indians. George Hendrick singled in the eighth inning for the only hit off Palmer. Tommy Davis drove in five runs in Palmer's support with a double and two singles. Charlie Spikes hit two homers for the Indians' runs in the nightcap before Andy Etchebarren put the Orioles ahead with a three-run double in the fourth inning.

Tigers 4, Red Sox 2 at Detroit (night game):
Al Kaline batted in three runs with a homer and single to reach a career total of 1,500 RBIs and provide the Tigers with a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox. Kaline hit his homer in the first inning. Tommy Harper had a matching drive for the Red Sox in the third. The tie then lasted until the eighth when the Tigers loaded the bases and Kaline drove in two runs with a single. Hits by Willie Horton and Frank Howard added another tally before the inning ended. The Red Sox picked up their second run on an RBI single by Luis Aparicio in the ninth.

Royals 2, White Sox 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Putting on the speed, Freddie Patek scored from second base on an infield hit by Carl Taylor in the 10th inning to bring the Royals a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. Steve Busby, who pitched for the Royals, gave up only four hits, but the White Sox scored in the sixth on a triple by Jorge Orta and single by Jerry Hairston. John Mayberry doubled for the Royals in the ninth and Taylor, taking over as a pinch-runner, scored the tying run on a double by Hal McRae. With one out in the 10th, Patek walked and stole second, After Cookie Rojas flied out, Amos Otis was passed intentionally. Taylor, who had remained in the game after his pinch-running chore, smashed a grounder up the middle. Eddie Leon made a diving stop of the ball, but his throw home was too late to catch Patek. Taylor was credited with a hit.

Twins 8, A's 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Exploding for seven runs in the first inning, the Twins defeated the Athletics, 8-2, to complete the sweep of the three-game series. Rod Carew and Bobby Darwin singled and George Mitterwald homered to account for the first three runs. A walk to Larry Hisle, double by Joe Lis and single by Danny Thompson added two tallies and kayoed Dave Hamilton. After Horacio Pina relieved, Steve Brye smashed his first homer of the season for another pair of runs to climax the Twins' outburst.

Yankees 7, Brewers 6 at New York (day game):
Lindy McDaniel was rewarded for his tremendous job of relief pitching when the Yankees scored on a triple by Roy White and single by Ron Blomberg in the eighth inning to defeat the Brewers, 7-6. McDaniel, in relief of Mel Stottlemyre, worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed only two hits and one run.

Rangers 5, Angels 2 at Texas (day game):
Seldom-used Tom Grieve, who had been at bat only 30 times previously this season, hit a homer with two men on base in the second inning to enable the Rangers to defeat the Angels, 5-2, for their sixth straight victory. The homer and RBIs were the first of the year for Grieve. Jim Fregosi added a homer in the third inning.

Pirates 10, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
The Pirates piled up 21 hits, their season's high, and defeated the Cubs, 10-6. Rennie Stennett had two doubles and two singles to lead the attack. Richie Zisk rapped a homer and two singles, while Willie Stargell contributed two doubles and a single. The Cubs also were in a hitting mood, getting 13 safeties including a homer by Adrian Garrett. Dave Giusti, the Pirates' third pitcher, ran into trouble in the ninth inning when the Cubs loaded the bases on three hits with one out, but the reliever saved the game by retiring Ron Santo on a pop fly and striking out Carmen Fanzone.

Reds 12, Braves 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Johnny Bench belted two homers to drive in five runs and added a sixth RBI on a walk with the bases loaded to lead the Reds' attack in support of Jack Billingham, who gained his 15th victory by defeating the Braves, 12-2.

Astros 5, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Roger Metzger rapped four hits in five trips, including a triple, to pace the Astros to a 5-2 victory over the Dodgers. Joe Ferguson batted in both of the Dodgers' runs with a triple in the fourth inning. The Astros bounced back with three runs in the fifth. Tommy Helms singled, stopped at third on a double by Johnny Edwards and scored on an infield out by Jesus Alou. Edwards crossed the plate with the tying run on a wild pitch. Tommie Agee then walked and Metzger hit his triple to knock in the Astros' deciding run.

Expos 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
A triple by Mike Jorgensen capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning as the Expos came from behind to defeat the Phillies, 5-4. Tommy Hutton homered with a man on base in the eighth to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead. In the Expos' ninth, Bob Stinson was hit by a pitch and was forced by Larry Lintz, who scored on a double by Hal Breeden. Ron Hunt singled and Jorgensen then hit his triple to knock in the deciding runs.

Padres 6, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Padres broke their seven-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Giants, who were stopped on a six-game winning streak. Derrel Thomas, subbing at shortstop for the injured Enzo Hernandez, hit three singles and drove in three of the Padres' runs. Bill Greif limited the Giants to five hits.

Mets 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Tom Seaver gave up a run in the first inning, but the Mets' ace righthander was invincible thereafter in defeating the Cardinals, 2-1. Lou Brock greeted Seaver with a leadoff single and stole second. After taking third on a safe bunt by Ted Sizemore, Brock scored while the Mets were erasing Sizemore and Joe Torre on a double-play grounder. John Milner homered to tie the score in the fifth and the Mets put across the winning run against Rick Wise in the sixth when Felix Millan singled and raced home on a double by Rusty Staub.
