Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
The Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Orioles as Dick McAuliffe, Duke Sims and Jim Northrup hit home runs in a 4-3 triumph, the 10th of the season for lefthander Mickey Lolich. McAuliffe broke a 1-1 tie with a leadoff homer in the second, Sims connected to open the fourth and Northrup homered, also with the bases empty, in the sixth. Each of the blows came off loser Jesse Jefferson. Baltimore touched Lolich for a single run in the first on a single by Merv Rettenmund, a walk, sacrifice and groundout. Lolich blanked the Birds until Andy Etchebarren's two-run homer in the ninth, his first of the season. John Hiller came on to strand two runners and earn his 22nd save.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 3 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox beat the Yankees for the ninth time in 12 meetings when Rick Miller's two-out single in the ninth scored Rico Petrocelli from third, giving Boston a 4-3 victory. The Yanks entered the ninth down by two runs, but a pinch-homer by Jim Ray Hart tied the score. Petrocelli, who hit a two-run homer in the second, opened the Red Sox ninth with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch by loser Sparky Lyle, then to third on a groundout. Miller then singled up the middle to end the contest, making a winner of Luis Tiant, who went the distance and worked out of constant trouble. Tommy Harper hit a bases-empty homer for the Sox in the fifth.

White Sox 9, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
The White Sox unloaded four triples plus homers by Buddy Bradford and Ken Henderson and got steady hurling from Stan Bahnsen in a 9-1 victory over the Twins. The White Sox scored four times in the sixth to rout loser Jim Kaat. A walk to Pat Kelly, triple by Jerry Hairston, single by Bill Melton and Bradford's triple finished Kaat. Reliever Ray Corbin then wild-pitched Bradford home with the fourth run of the frame. Tony Oliva spoiled Bahnsen's shutout bid with a solo homer in the eighth, but the Chicago hurler finished with an eight-hit performance to claim his 14th victory.

Rangers 6, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
With an overpowering 13-strikeout performance, Jim Bibby became the first Texas pitcher to author a no-hitter, beating the Athletics, 6-0. The gem was the fourth in the A. L. this season; Kansas City's Steve Busby threw the first on April 27 and California's Nolan Ryan pitched no-hitters May 15 and July 15.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs pounced on Bob Gibson for four singles and three runs in the first inning and made them stand up for a 3-1 victory, only the fourth in the last 17 games for Chicago. The Cards also scored their only run in the first when Lou Brock walked, stole the 600th base of his career, and came home on Tim McCarver's single. Singles by Rick Monday, Billy Williams and Glenn Beckert, a walk to Jose Cardenal and an infield out produced all the runs for the Cubs, who cut St. Louis' Eastern Division lead to 1½ games. Rick Reuschel and Dave LaRoche combined on a six-hitter for the Cubs, Reuschel claiming the victory, his 11th.

Braves 7, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Pleasant Braves' surprises Darrell Evans and Ron Schueler led Atlanta to a 7-3 triumph over the Astros. Evans slugged his 29th homer and drove in three runs, while Schueler upped his record to 6-2 with a 10-strikeout, seven-hit performance on the mound. Evans homered with Ralph Garr aboard in the first inning and singled home Paul Casanova in the fourth to give the Braves a 5-3 lead. Bob Watson homered for the Astros in the second after Schueler had bobbled the throw covering first on Roger Metzger's bunt.

Dodgers 5, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Claude Osteen set the Giants down on five hits to post his 12th victory, 5-2, with Dodger teammates Davey Lopes and Joe Ferguson supplying home-run help, both with the bases empty. The Dodgers scored three off loser Ron Bryant in the third inning on singles by Bill Russell, Lopes, Willie Davis and a double by Manny Mota. A double by Garry Maddox and homer by Gary Matthews produced the Giants' runs in the fourth.

[DH] Expos 1, Mets 0 (night game) / Expos 5, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
A three-run double in the 10th inning by John Boccabella gave the Expos a 5-2 victory over the Mets and the sweep of a doubleheader after Steve Rogers had turned in his second straight shutout in the opening game, winning 1-0 over New York and Jon Matlack. The two matched shutout innings until the ninth when Montreal scored on a single by Ron Hunt, a sacrifice and Ken Singleton's double. The decisive 10th in the nightcap saw the Expos load the bases against loser Buzz Capra on walks to Hunt and Singleton, a wild pitch and an intentional pass to Bob Bailey. Boccabella followed with a bases-clearing drive off the left field wall. The Mets had taken a 2-1 lead in the fifth on Bud Harrelson's triple and a two-out bunt single by Felix Millan, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games. The Expos tied it in the seventh on a pinch-double by Mike Jorgensen and Hunt's two-out single.

Phillies 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Steve Carlton, flashing a bit of last year's Cy Young Award form, shut out the Pirates on six hits, 1-0. Batterymate Bob Boone singled home the game's only run off loser Bob Moose in the fourth after a single by Greg Luzinski and walk to Del Unser. Carlton pitched out of one tight spot to claim his third shutout, fanning Rennie Stennett with runners at second and third and two out in the seventh.
