Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 3, Yankees 2 at Boston (day game):
After a fight that resulted in the banishment of Thurman Munson and Carlton Fisk, the Red Sox scored with two out in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 3-2. Munson doubled in the Yankees' half of the ninth and, after an intentional pass to Felipe Alou, advanced to third on an infield out. Gene Michael then attempted a suicide squeeze bunt but missed the ball, and Munson was tagged out as he smashed into Fisk at the plate. An exchange of fisticuffs followed and both battlers were ejected from the game. With two away in the Red Sox half, Bob Montgomery singled, Rick Miller walked and Mario Guerrero singled off Sparky Lyle to drive in the winning run.

Angels 5, Rangers 1 at California (night game):
Rudy May gained his first victory since June 18 by pitching the Angels past the Rangers, 5-1. The Angels put together five singles and a sacrifice fly for three runs in the second inning and added their other pair in the fourth on two walks and two singles. Doubles by Tom Grieve and Dave Nelson accounted for the Rangers' run in the fifth.

Royals 4, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
With batting support from Hal McRae, Steve Busby triumphed over 20-game winner Wilbur Wood as the Royals defeated the White Sox, 4-2. McRae tripled after singles by Rick Reichardt and Lou Piniella in the second inning. Singles by Freddie Patek and Cookie Rojas around a wild pitch added a run in the third before McRae wrapped up the Royals' scoring with a homer in the fourth.

Orioles 4, Indians 2 at Cleveland (day game):
The Orioles, who split the mound duties between Mike Cuellar and Bob Reynolds, defeated the Indians, 4-2, and moved into first place in the Eastern Division by four percentage points over the Yankees. The Orioles loaded the bases in the third inning and scored their first two runs on a sacrifice fly by Paul Blair and single by Tommy Davis. Boog Powell homered for the deciding run in the sixth. Singles by Merv Rettenmund and Rich Coggins, plus an error, added an insurance counter in the seventh. Buddy Bell and Chris Chambliss hit run-scoring doubles for the Indians.

Tigers 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Tigers, after being shut out for seven innings, rallied to defeat the Brewers, 2-1, for their eighth straight victory. George Scott homered for the Brewers' run off Joe Coleman in the second. Skip Lockwood, who started for the Brewers, was lifted in the eighth after Ed Brinkman walked and Jim Northrup singled. Facing Eduardo Rodriguez in relief, Mickey Stanley popped up before Gates Brown singled to load the bases. Willie Horton struck out, but Tony Taylor walked to force in the tying run. In the ninth, the Tigers loaded the bases and Brown beat out an infield hit to drive in the winning run.

A's 6, Twins 2 at Oakland (night game):
Coming out of the bullpen for his first start since 1967, Darold Knowles combined with Rollie Fingers to pitch the Athletics to a 6-2 victory over the Twins. Knowles allowed four hits before being lifted after Bobby Darwin singled in the sixth inning. Fingers gave up one hit the rest of the way. Gene Tenace hit a homer for the A's and Bert Campaneris broke out of an 0-for-19 slump with two doubles, scoring one run and driving in another. Ted Kubiak singled in the fifth inning for his first hit in 35 official trips since June 19.

Braves 14, Reds 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Davey Johnson smashed two homers and Darrell Evans and Mike Lum whacked one apiece among the Braves' 17 hits in a 14-6 victory over the Reds. Johnson connected for the first time in the second inning and Evans added two runs with his blast in the sixth. The Reds had a two-run homer by Tony Perez in the seventh when they scored three times to take a 6-4 lead, but the Braves struck back for four runs on five singles in their half. Johnson led off the eighth with his second homer of the game and the Braves went on to add five more runs on an error, three singles, a double by Ralph Garr and Lum's round-tripper.

Astros 5, Dodgers 0 at Houston (night game):
J.R. Richard pitched the first shutout of his major league career and Jim Wynn, hitless in 32 trips, broke out of his slump with a two-run double as the Astros defeated the Dodgers, 5-0. Wynn entered the game in the fourth inning as a replacement for injured Cesar Cedeno. Tommie Agee walked in the sixth, Roger Metzger singled and Wynn followed with his double to end Richard's scoreless duel with Al Downing. The Astros went on to add two more runs before the stanza ended on a single by Bob Watson, forceout by Doug Rader, wild throw by Davey Lopes and single by Lee May. Wynn walked in the eighth, stole second and scored the final run on a single by Rader.

[DH] Cardinals 9, Expos 3 (night game) / Cardinals 2, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Rick Wise and Reggie Cleveland pitched complete games and each posted his 12th victory as the Cardinals defeated the Expos in a twi-night doubleheader, 9-3 and 2-0. The Cardinals were losing in the lidlifter, 3-2, before exploding for five runs in the sixth inning. Wise clinched his own decision by smashing a homer with two men on base. In the nightcap, a double by Tim McCarver and single by Ted Simmons produced a run in the third inning and the other tally followed in the eighth on a double by Sizemore and infield outs by McCarver and Bernie Carbo.

[DH] Mets 3, Pirates 0 (night game) / Mets 5, Pirates 2 at New York (night game):
After Tom Seaver beat the Pirates for the fourth time this season, posting a 3-0 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, the Mets completed the sweep by winning the nightcap, 5-2. Seaver allowed only four hits and struck out 11. The Mets, who were held to three hits by three Pirate pitchers, scored all their runs without the benefit of a safety. Wayne Garrett walked in the first inning and counted on a sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Rusty Staub. Four walks and a hit batsman forced the other two runs over the plate in the second. John Milner hit two homers for the Mets in the nightcap and Ken Boswell batted in two runs a with pair of singles.

Phillies 2, Cubs 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Cubs were held to only two hits by Wayne Twitchell and lost to the Phillies, 2-0. Twitchell's duel with Burt Hooton was decided in the seventh inning. With one out, Bob Boone doubled. The Cubs passed Denny Doyle intentionally in an attempt to set up a double play, but Craig Robinson foiled the move with a single, scoring Boone. When Gene Hiser threw wildly from center field, Doyle also crossed the plate.

Padres 6, Giants 5 at San Diego (night game):
Although tagged for a grand slam by Ed Goodson, Clay Kirby was able to pitch the Padres to a 6-5 victory over the Giants thanks to a game-deciding homer by Dave Roberts. The Padres built up a 5-0 lead going into the seventh inning when two errors, one by Kirby, and a single by Gary Thomasson loaded the bases for Goodson's smash as a pinch-hitter. However, Roberts rapped his homer in the Padres' half for what proved to be the winning run as the Giants fell short with a tally in the ninth inning.
