Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Red Sox 8, Orioles 5 (night game) / Orioles 8, Red Sox 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A seven-run outburst in the fourth inning propelled the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Orioles came back with a 17-hit attack to win the nightcap, 8-2. The Orioles scored four runs in the second inning of the first game, three coming on a homer by Earl Williams, before the Red Sox exploded. Dwight Evans knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single. Another pair followed on singles by Tommy Harper and Luis Aparicio. After two out, Carl Yastrzemski and Orlando Cepeda walked to force in Harper. Rico Petrocelli then climaxed the stanza with a two-run single. Tommy Davis, Paul Blair and Mark Belanger had three hits apiece for the Orioles in the second game.

A's 2, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Although yielding only three hits, Bill Singer was the victim of an unearned run in the second inning and then was defeated in the 11th when the Athletics scored on doubles by Mike Hegan and Bert Campaneris to beat the Angels, 2-1. In the second, Reggie Jackson walked, went to third when Al Gallagher missed a grounder by Deron Johnson and scored on a forceout by Vic Davalillo. The Angels got their run off Vida Blue in the seventh on singles by Frank Robinson, Richie Scheinblum and Ken Berry.

White Sox 5, Rangers 3 at Chicago (night game):
Jim Bibby, making his first start since pitching a no-hitter against the Athletics July 30, yielded eight hits and also walked nine as the Rangers lost to the White Sox, 5-3. The Rangers staked Bibby to a three-run lead in the first inning, but his wildness more than offset the fact that he struck out 11. The White Sox scored twice in the fourth on a single by Bill Melton, two passes that loaded the bases and a single by Luis Alvarado. Two more walks and a single by Carlos May produced the tying run in the fifth. The White Sox then added the winning pair in the eighth. After a single by Buddy Bradford and two passes, Jorge Orta singled to drive in the tie-breaking tally and another run followed on a grounder by Jerry Hairston.

Indians 9, Brewers 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Two homers by Oscar Gamble and one by Buddy Bell helped power the Indians to a 9-4 victory over the Brewers. Darrell Porter homered with two men on base for the Brewers in the first inning, but the Indians came back to tie the score before breaking away with four runs in the sixth. Two singles around an infield out produced one run and another scored on an error before Gamble came to the plate and smashed a two-run homer. Bell hit for the circuit in the eighth and Gamble followed with his second round-tripper of the game to wrap up the scoring.

Tigers 7, Yankees 2 at Detroit (night game):
While the Tigers jumped on Sam McDowell in two scoring bursts, Mickey Lolich yielded only five hits and defeated the Yankees, 7-2. The Tigers combined singles by Dick Sharon, Aurelio Rodriguez, Ed Brinkman and Tony Taylor with a walk and an error for four runs in the second inning. Three more runs followed in the fourth on a walk to Rodriguez, single by Brinkman, sacrifice fly by Mickey Stanley, single by Al Kaline and double by Willie Horton. Thurman Munson hit a homer to produce the Yankees' pair.

Royals 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A fast start by the Royals, who scored three runs in the first inning, carried them to a 4-2 victory over the Twins. Singles by Freddie Patek and Cookie Rojas and an infield out by Amos Otis produced the first run before John Mayberry smashed a homer for the deciding blow. Otis singled in the sixth, moved to third on a single by Mayberry and scored an insurance run when Rick Reichardt bounced into a double play. The Twins picked up their pair in the home half of the sixth on a single by Tony Oliva and homer by Steve Braun.

Braves 5, Padres 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Although Mike Lum, Dusty Baker and Davey Johnson hit homers in the fourth inning, the Braves still had to come from behind to defeat the Padres, 5-4. After the Braves' show of power, the Padres donned their slugging togs with a pinch-homer by Dave Winfield in the fifth and three-run blast by Gene Locklear in the sixth. The Braves tied the score in their half of the sixth when Baker walked with the bases loaded. With one out in the ninth, Dick Dietz walked. Roric Harrison came in to run and took third on a single by Ralph Garr. After Hank Aaron drew an intentional pass, manager Eddie Mathews substituted pinch-runner for pinch-runner, sending Chuck Goggin to take Harrison's place. Goggin then scored the winning run on a single by Darrell Evans.

[DH] Astros 1, Reds 0 (night game) / Reds 11, Astros 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
After losing the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 1-0, in 10 innings, the Reds came storming back to beat the Astros, 11-5, in the second game. Don Wilson pitched the Astros' shutout on a four-hitter and was the winner on an unearned run. Tommie Agee opened the 10th by reaching base on a throwing error by Darrel Chaney, took third on a single by Roger Metzger and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cesar Cedeno. Pete Rose rapped three hits including a bases-loaded double, and Dan Driessen contributed a single, triple and homer to the Reds' 16-hit attack in the nightcap. Joe Morgan also homered for the Reds, while the Astros had a round-tripper by Doug Rader. The doubleheader, played without a promotion, drew the largest regular-season crowd in Reds' history, 52,285.

Cubs 3, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
The Cubs got a great pitching performance from Rick Reuschel, who allowed only four hits, struck out 11 and did not issue a pass in shutting out the Expos, 3-0. Reuschel also drove in the Cubs' first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning after singles by Andre Thornton and Randy Hundley. Don Kessinger walked and scored on a double by Ron Santo in the seventh and Hundley hit a homer in the eighth.

Mets 7, Cardinals 3 at New York (night game):
Willie Mays hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to clinch the Mets' 7-3 victory over the Cardinals, who played with Mike Tyson out of the lineup and with a number of other players under the weather because of a flu outbreak. John Milner knocked in two runs for the Mets with a triple in the first inning, but he was hit in the head by a throw from the outfield and had to leave the game. Rusty Staub ran for Milner and scored on a single by Jerry Grote. The Cardinals came back with the aid of a homer by Bernie Carbo to tie the score, but the Mets went ahead again in the fifth when Ted Martinez singled, Jon Matlack sacrificed and Don Hahn singled.

Pirates 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Aided by two homers, John Morlan gained his first major league victory when the Pirates defeated the Phillies, 3-1. Willie Stargell homered after a triple by Al Oliver in the first inning and Manny Sanguillen added the other run with a circuit clout in the sixth. The Phillies picked up their run in the home half of the sixth on a single by Willie Montanez and double by Greg Luzinski.

Dodgers 3, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Andy Messersmith held the Giants to three hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 3-0 victory. A walk to Davey Lopes and singles by Bill Buckner and Willie Davis in the first inning provided the only run that Messersmith actually needed, but the Dodgers added another on a walk to Willie Crawford and singles by Steve Garvey and Ron Cey in the fourth before winding up with a double by Crawford and triple by Garvey in the sixth.
