Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Doyle Alexander, who was on the disabled list for 26 days with tendinitis in his right elbow, returned to action and was knocked out in the first inning as the Orioles lost to the Red Sox, 5-3. The Red Sox rapped Alexander for four runs on a single by Luis Aparicio, double by Reggie Smith, single by Orlando Cepeda, double by Rico Petrocelli and single by Carlton Fisk. Eddie Watt relieved and pitched the rest of the way, giving up only one run on a homer by Tommy Harper in the ninth. Merv Rettenmund hit for the circuit with a man on base for the Orioles.

Indians 7, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Turning in his 20th complete game of the season, Gaylord Perry pitched the Indians to a 7-3 victory over the White Sox. The Indians decided the outcome with five runs after two were out in the second inning. In succession, Jack Brohamer doubled, Frank Duffy singled, Buddy Bell was hit by a pitch, Oscar Gamble singled, Chris Chambliss doubled and John Ellis singled.

Tigers 5, Yankees 4 at Detroit (night game):
Aurelio Rodriguez raced home from first base on two errors in the 10th inning to score the run that gave the Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Yankees. The Tigers sent the game into overtime with a three-run rally in the ninth. A double by Mickey Stanley, singles by Willie Horton and Al Kaline's forceout of Horton produced one run. Frank Howard then batted for Norm Cash and smashed a homer to tie the score at 4-4. In the 10th, Rodriguez led off with a single. Ed Brinkman bunted and when Sparky Lyle threw the ball past first base, Rodriguez started steaming around the bases and scored when Felipe Alou threw wildly to the plate.

Astros 5, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Jim Wynn, Roger Metzger and Cesar Cedeno, the first three batters in the Astros' order, collected seven hits among them in a 5-4 victory over the Reds. Wynn walked in the fourth and scored on an error and single by Cedeno. After drawing a pass in the sixth, Wynn stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Metzger. Tommy Helms, the only Astro to get a hit other than the leadoff trio, singled in the eighth to start the Astros' winning three-run rally. Jerry Reuss sacrificed and Wynn singled to score Helms. Singles by Metzger and Cedeno added another run before Metzger counted what proved to be the winning run on a grounder by Bob Watson.

Expos 7, Cubs 3 at Montreal (day game):
Bob Bailey hit a triple and homer to drive in three runs and Ken Singleton and Jim Lyttle also hit homers as the Expos defeated the Cubs, 7-3. A single by Ron Hunt, pass to Mike Jorgensen and single by Ron Fairly produced a run for the Expos in the first inning before Bailey batted in two more with his triple. Singleton and Bailey hit their homers in the sixth, Singleton's blow coming with a man on base, and Lyttle added his round-tripper in the eighth.

Mets 10, Cardinals 3 at New York (night game):
Knocked out in the seventh inning, Reggie Cleveland was stopped on his personal six-game winning streak when the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 10-3. Felix Millan and Rusty Staub opened the stanza with singles and when John Milner doubled on a drive that Bernie Carbo misjudged in right field, Millan crossed the plate to tie the score at 3-3. After an intentional pass to Cleon Jones, Wayne Garrett batted in two runs with a single. The Mets then iced their victory with five runs in the eighth inning.

Dodgers 2, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Al Downing pitched a five-hitter and Willie Crawford drove in one of the Dodgers' runs and scored another in a 2-0 victory over the Padres. Singles by Bill Buckner, Willie Davis and Crawford produced the initial tally in the fourth inning. Crawford singled again in the sixth, stole second and scored on a single by Ron Cey.
