Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, Indians 5 at Chicago (night game):
The Indians were unable to hold a 5-0 lead and lost to the White Sox in 12 innings, 6-5. Charlie Spikes hit a homer for the Indians. The White Sox began their comeback with three runs in the sixth, two scoring on a circuit clout by Bill Melton. The tying pair followed in the eighth on singles by Johnny Jeter, Melton and Carlos May and a double by Ken Henderson. Melton walked in the 12th, stole second with two out and scored the winning run on a single by Jerry Hairston.

[DH] A's 8, Tigers 4 (night game) / Tigers 2, A's 0 at Detroit (night game):
After the Athletics scored five runs in the last two innings to win the first game, 8-4, Jim Perry and John Hiller stifled Oakland's bats and pitched the Tigers to a 2-0 victory in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader. In the lidlifter, the A's broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the eighth. Sal Bando tripled and scored the go-ahead run on a double by Reggie Jackson. Bando added a double in the ninth when the A's counted their final pair. Al Kaline and Bill Freehan hit homers for the Tigers. In the second game, the Tigers scored on singles by Frank Howard, Freehan and Aurelio Rodriguez in the fourth inning and picked up an unearned run in the sixth. Perry held the A's to five hits before being removed with two men on base and one out in the eighth. Hiller pitched hitless relief the rest of the way to register his 25th save.

Royals 7, Red Sox 6 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals, after rallying to overcome a 6-1 deficit, capped their comeback with a run in the 11th inning to defeat the Red Sox, 7-6. The Red Sox built up their early lead with the aid of a two-run triple by Doug Griffin before the Royals got back in the game with three runs in the fourth. Freddie Patek then homered in the sixth and the tying tally followed on a single by Cookie Rojas and triple by Rick Reichardt. In the 11th, Reichardt singled, stopped at second on another single by Hal McRae and scored the winning run when Lou Piniella doubled.

Angels 6, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The speed of Ken Berry, who scored from third base on a short fly in the 10th inning, carried the Angels to a 6-5 victory over the Brewers. Nolan Ryan, who started for the Angels, gave up four runs in the first inning, two scoring on a homer by Darrell Porter, but the righthander later struck out eight straight batters to tie his own A. L. record. After the Angels came back to tie the score, Berry opened the 10th with a single and reached third on a sacrifice by Billy Parker and single by Tommy McCraw. After Leroy Stanton walked to load the bases, Bob Oliver lifted a fly ball to short left field. Shortstop Tim Johnson went back and caught the ball, but Berry tagged up and outraced the throw to the plate.

[DH] Twins 4, Orioles 2 (night game) / Orioles 10, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins scored all their runs in the sixth inning and won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-2, but the batting of Merv Rettenmund led the Orioles to a 10-4 victory in the nightcap. Bobby Grich tripled and doubled and scored both Orioles' runs in the first game. The Twins began their rally in the sixth with an infield hit by Rod Carew, who advanced to second on a wild throw by Larry Brown, stopped at third on a single by Tony Oliva and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Darwin. After Steve Braun walked, Jim Holt drove in two runs with a double and crossed the plate himself on a single by Danny Thompson. Rettenmund hit a homer, triple and single for the Orioles in the second game.

[DH] Rangers 2, Yankees 1 (night game) / Yankees 3, Rangers 1 at New York (night game):
Held to five hits by Jim Bibby, the Yankees lost the first game of a twi-night doubleheader to the Rangers, 2-1, before coming back to win the second game, 3-1, behind the combined six-hit hurling of Doc Medich and Lindy McDaniel. In the opener, the Rangers scored both their runs in the second inning on a double by Alex Johnson, pass to Jeff Burroughs, single by Toby Harrah, wild pitch by Sam McDowell and single by Jim Spencer. The Yankees almost pulled the game out of the fire after scoring their run in the ninth on an infield hit by Matty Alou, pass to Roy White and double by Bobby Murcer. However, Graig Nettles lined into a double play and Felipe Alou bounced out to end the game. Sonny Siebert, who started the nightcap for the Rangers, was charged with the loss although pitching to only two batters before leaving the game with a sore shoulder. Bernie Allen led off with a double for the Yankees and Matty Alou bunted safely. After Mike Paul relieved Siebert, Allen scored on a sacrifice fly by White. Jim Ray Hart drove in another Yankee run with a single in the fifth and Matty Alou provided an insurance marker with a homer in the seventh.

Reds 1, Cubs 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds combined two-hit pitching by Don Gullett and a homer by Joe Morgan in the seventh inning to defeat the Cubs, 1-0.

Mets 6, Cardinals 5 at New York (day game):
The Mets received effective relief pitching from Buzz Capra and Tug McGraw and defeated the Cardinals, 6-5, to gain a split in their six-game series, which included two make-up contests due to previous postponements. The Cards put together five straight singles off Ray Sadecki to take a 4-3 lead in the third inning, but the Mets came back with a pair in their half on a single by Rusty Staub, double by John Milner and single by Cleon Jones. Ted Martinez singled in the fourth and, after a sacrifice and an error, counted what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Staub. Capra, who was the winner in relief, yielded a tally in the sixth, but McGraw shut out the Cardinals in the last three innings to save the game.

Astros 2, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Posting his second straight shutout, Don Wilson pitched the Astros to a 2-0 victory over the Pirates. The Astros got to Nelson Briles for a run in the fourth inning on a double by Roger Metzger and single by Cesar Cedeno. Their other run followed after Richie Zisk dropped a fly by Tommy Helms for a two-base error in the eighth. Helms moved to third on a sacrifice and beat the throw home to score when Metzger grounded to Dal Maxvill.

Dodgers 6, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Dodgers scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the second to defeat the Padres, 6-1. A single by Davey Lopes, pass to Willie Davis and doubles by Steve Garvey and Ron Cey accounted for the opening burst. Singles by Don Sutton, Manny Mota and Davis, an error by Jerry Morales and single by Garvey added the trio in the second. Sutton, who started for the Dodgers, allowed only two hits in seven innings before leaving the mound with a stiff shoulder. Doug Rau, in relief, faltered in the ninth and was lifted after a one-out single by Leron Lee with the bases loaded produced the Padres' run. Jim Brewer took over and retired the last two batters.

Expos 2, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Steve Renko pitched a three-hitter and Bob Bailey broke a 1-1 tie with a homer in the seventh inning to enable the Expos to defeat the Giants, 2-1. Willie McCovey accounted for the Giants' run with a round-tripper in the second. The Expos tied the score with singles by Mike Jorgensen, Ken Singleton and Jim Lyttle in the fourth.
