Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 13, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Enjoying their biggest offensive outburst of the season, the Indians piled up 22 hits and started the scoring with nine runs in the first inning en route to a 13-1 trouncing of the White Sox. The Indians sent 13 men to bat in their big inning and collected nine hits, including a leadoff homer by Oscar Gamble and another circuit clout by Walt Williams with two men on base. The White Sox managed only four hits off Dick Tidrow and scored their run in the eighth on a walk, a passed ball and single by Pat Kelly.

Tigers 3, A's 2 at Detroit (night game):
Turning from home-run hitter to bunter, Bill Freehan executed a perfect squeeze play in the eighth inning to provide the Tigers with a 3-2 victory over the Athletics. Freehan homered in the second. The Tigers added another run in that same stanza on a double by Dick Sharon and single by Aurelio Rodriguez. In the eighth, Al Kaline singled and took third on a single by Willie Horton. Freehan then laid down his bunt and beat it out for a hit as Kaline scored.

Red Sox 9, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Designated hitter Orlando Cepeda tied a major league record with four doubles and drove in six runs to lead the Red Sox to a 9-4 victory over the Royals. Cepeda was the 30th player in modern history to collect four doubles in a nine-inning game. The former National Leaguer started with a three-run double in the first inning and doubled for another RBI in the fifth. After a wasted hit in the seventh, Cepeda knocked in two runs with his fourth two-bagger in the eighth. John Mayberry batted in three runs for the Royals with a double and homer.

Brewers 8, Angels 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Colborn broke the Brewers' club record for most games won in one season by defeating the Angels, 8-2, for his 15th victory. The previous high was 14 by Marty Pattin in 1970 and '71 and by Jim Lonborg in 1972. The Brewers gave Colborn more than enough support to win with a five-run outburst in the third inning. The first run scored on an error with the bases loaded. A single by Ollie Brown and infield out by Ellie Rodriguez each added a tally. Pedro Garcia then doubled to drive in another pair. Frank Robinson collected a homer, double and two singles for four of the Angels' six hits off Colborn.

Orioles 6, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Jim Palmer pitched a six-hitter and Elrod Hendricks and Rich Coggins smashed homers as the Orioles defeated the Twins, 6-1. Brooks Robinson drove in the Orioles' first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and plated another with a single in the fourth before scoring himself on Hendricks' homer. A double by Boog Powell and single by Paul Blair added a run in the fifth. The Twins avoided a shutout in their half with a single by Joe Lis and double by Steve Braun. Coggins, who had four hits, wrapped up the scoring with his homer in the seventh.

Yankees 3, Rangers 2 at New York (day game):
Fred Beene, who pitched what amounted to a complete game in relief, gained his sixth straight victory when the Yankees rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Rangers, 3-2. Fritz Peterson, who started for the Yankees, delivered only one pitch on which Dave Nelson bunted safely. Peterson hurt his right thigh running to cover first base and had to leave the game. Beene relieved and allowed only four hits the rest of the way, but one of them was a homer by Bill Sudakis in the fifth. The Yankees, who were trailing, 2-1, opened the ninth with the tying run on a double by Bobby Murcer and single by Thurman Munson. After advancing to second on an infield out by Felipe Alou, Munson scored the winning run on a single by Gene Michael.

Reds 4, Cubs 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Triples by Tony Perez and Bobby Tolan helped the Reds score four runs in the fourth inning to account for a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. After the Cubs had picked up a run in the top half of the fourth, the Reds came back with the tying tally on an infield hit by Pete Rose, safe bunt by Joe Morgan and single by Dan Driessen. Perez followed with his triple to drive in Morgan and Driessen. Tolan then tripled to score Perez with what proved to be the winning run. Ron Santo homered with a man on base for the Cubs in the eighth.

Mets 1, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Mets defeated the Dodgers, 1-0, in a pitchers' duel between Jon Matlack and Andy Messersmith. Matlack allowed only two hits. The Mets collected six off Messersmith and scored their run in the second inning on a walk to John Milner, a wild pitch and two-out single by Jerry Grote.

Pirates 4, Astros 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A three-run rally in the sixth inning enabled the Pirates to defeat the Astros, 4-3. The Pirates scored once on singles by Gene Clines, Dave Cash and Al Oliver in the fourth before the Astros put together four singles with an error by Manny Sanguillen for three unearned runs off Jim Rooker in the fifth. Gene Alley batted for Rooker in the sixth and walked. Cash singled and Oliver hit a sacrifice fly to score Alley. Willie Stargell doubled, driving in Cash with the tying run, and Richie Zisk singled to plate Stargell with the deciding tally. Bob Johnson, in relief of Rooker, held the Astros to one hit in the last three innings.

Padres 3, Phillies 0 at San Diego (night game):
Bill Greif pitched his third two-hitter of the season and Fred Kendall smashed a three-run homer to give the Padres a 3-0 victory over the Phillies. Kendall's drive off Steve Carlton came in the fourth inning after Nate Colbert singled and Ivan Murrell was safe on an error by Denny Doyle.

Giants 2, Expos 1 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants were held to only four hits by Steve Rogers, but Bobby Bonds singled in the fourth inning and Willie McCovey followed with a homer to defeat the Expos, 2-1. John Boccabella homered in the fifth for the Expos' run off Ron Bryant. The Expos loaded the bases with two out in the seventh on a double by Rogers and two walks, but Elias Sosa relieved Bryant and struck out Bob Bailey to end the threat.

Braves 4, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
A slugging outburst by the Braves produced four runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 4-1. Mike Lum led off with a homer and, after two out, Darrell Evans walked, Hank Aaron tripled and Dusty Baker capped the inning with a round-tripper.
