Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
With two out in the ninth inning, Bill Sharp hit a homer off Joe Coleman to give the White Sox a 5-4 victory over the Tigers. Terry Forster came out of the bullpen and made his first start of the season for the White Sox, but gave way to Cy Acosta after Willie Horton opened the eighth with a single. Pinch-runner Jim Northrup took third on a single by Bill Freehan and crossed the plate on a grounder by Gates Brown to tie the score at 4-4.
Royals 3, Red Sox 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Hal McRae, who entered the game with a .199 batting average, smashed a triple and homer to lead the Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. McRae tripled in the second inning, scoring Lou Piniella, who had singled, and crossed the plate himself on a sacrifice fly by Rick Reichardt. McRae's homer in the fourth then accounted for the deciding run off Bill Lee, who failed for the fifth time in a bid for his 13th victory. Steve Busby, who started for the Royals, gave up five hits including a homer by Rick Miller, and struck out 11 before needing help from Doug Bird in the eighth inning.
Brewers 6, Angels 5 at Milwaukee (day game):
The man of the moment, Dave May hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to bring the Brewers a 6-5 victory over the Angels. The Brewers also had a two-run homer by Johnny Briggs in the fifth. Mike Epstein hit for the circuit with two men on base for the Angels in the sixth. Briggs opened the ninth with a single and was forced by Bob Coluccio before May won the game with his round-tripper.
Orioles 2, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
A wild pitch decided a duel between Mike Cuellar and Bert Blyleven as the Orioles defeated the Twins, 2-1, to move into first place in the East Division ahead of the Yankees and Tigers. Tommy Davis homered for the Orioles in the first inning. Merv Rettenmund tripled in the third and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a wild pitch by Blyleven. Cuellar allowed only one man to reach third base until the ninth when George Mitterwald singled home the Twins' run.
Dodgers 1, Mets 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers, who lost to the Mets, 1-0, in the previous night's game, turned around and gained a 1-0 victory in a duel between Claude Osteen and Jerry Koosman. The Dodgers' run counted in the eighth inning when Davey Lopes tripled arid Manny Mota singled.
Padres 10, Phillies 9 at San Diego (night game):
