Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Frank Robinson smashed a homer and two singles and figured in four of the Angels' runs in a 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. Robinson hit his homer with a man on base in the first inning and drove in another run with a single in the seventh to tie the score at 3-3. Leroy Stanton tripled and Richie Scheinblum singled for the tie-breaking tally in the eighth. Robinson then singled and counted an insurance run on singles by Bob Oliver and Mike Epstein in the ninth. Orlando Cepeda hit a two-run homer and Dwight Evans added a solo drive for the Red Sox' scoring.

Tigers 7, White Sox 3 at Detroit (night game):
Relieving with two out in the first inning, Fred Scherman pitched the rest of the way and was the winner when the Tigers used consecutive homers by Gates Brown and Al Kaline to defeat the White Sox, 7-3. The White Sox scored two runs off Mike Strahler before Scherman took over. The Tigers came back with a run in their half of the first and then decided the outcome in the third when Brown hit his homer with two men on base and Kaline followed with a circuit clout.

Royals 2, Orioles 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Homers by Hal McRae and Lou Piniella in the fifth inning carried the Royals to a 2-1 victory over the Orioles. Doyle Alexander, pitching for the Orioles, allowed only one hit in the first four frames before falling victim to Royals' round-trippers. The Orioles loaded the bases in the seventh on walks to Tommy Davis and Bobby Grich around a single by Boog Powell. When Brooks Robinson singled, Davis scored but Powell was thrown out at the plate on a throw from Amos Otis to Carl Taylor.

Brewers 5, Twins 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Sparked by George Scott, who homered with a man on base, the Brewers scored five runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Twins, 5-1. Dave May doubled ahead of Scott's homer off Bill Campbell, who was making his first major league start. Two walks, a single by Tim Johnson, an error on a throw by Bobby Darwin and a wild pitch added three other runs. The Twins scored off Skip Lockwood in the first on a double by Rod Carew and single by Tony Oliva. Lockwood pulled a muscle retiring the last batter in the third and Bill Champion pitched the rest of way to gain the victory.

Yankees 10, A's 9 at New York (night game):
A slugfest that produced seven homers, four doubles and one triple among a total of 31 hits saw the Yankees prevail over the Athletics, 10-9. Thurman Munson, Roy White and Ron Blomberg homered for the Yankees, while the Athletics had two round-trippers by Reggie Jackson and one each by Deron Johnson and Bert Campaneris. Munson hit his homer with two men on base and added a fourth RBI with a squeeze bunt. Jackson and Johnson, who had three hits apiece, each drove in four runs for the A's.

Indians 8, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Gaylord Perry pitched a six-hitter as the Indians breezed to an 8-1 victory over the Rangers. The Indians scored their first five runs off David Clyde, but the Rangers' youngster was a victim of poor support that resulted in three tainted tallies. Walt Williams started the Indians' scoring with a homer in the first inning. Chris Chambliss singled and scored when John Ellis singled and Bill Sudakis booted the ball in right field for a two-base error. Ellis then counted on a sacrifice fly by Charlie Spikes. With two out in the fourth, a double by Buddy Bell, intentional pass to Williams, infield hit by Chambliss and wild throw by Toby Harrah on the play admitted two more markers. Jeff Burroughs saved Rangers from being shutout with a homer in the fifth.

Astros 6, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by Tommy Helms in eighth inning povided the Astros with a 6-4 victory over the Cubs. Bob Watson drove in a pair of runs with two singles to pace the Astros to a 4-0 lead before the Cubs loaded the bases in the sixth and counted twice on a single by Pat Bourque after Jim Ray relieved J.R. Richard. The Cubs scored again on two walks and a single by Billy Williams in the seventh, but Helms' homer in the eighth was too much for the Cubs to overcome, although they added their final run off Ken Forsch in the ninth.

Phillies 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Mike Schmidt smashed a three-run homer in the seventh inning and added an insurance run with a round-tripper in the ninth to power the Phillies to a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. The Phillies scored their initial run in the first on singles by Cesar Tovar and Greg Luzinskl around a pair of infield outs. The Dodgers took a 3-1 lead in the fourth when Steve Garvey singled, Willie Crawford walked and Joe Ferguson homered. Schmidt's decisive drive in the seventh came after singles by Bill Robinson and Bob Boone.

Braves 5, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Making his first start since his no-hitter against the Padres August 5, Phil Niekro allowed five hits in pitching the Braves to a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Niekro retired the first three batters, but Willie Stargell doubled in the second inning and Richie Zisk homered. The Braves tied the score in the fourth, added a run on a homer by Mike Lum in the sixth and then counted twice in the ninth on singles by Frank Tepedino and Marty Perez. As a result, Niekro was able to win although giving up two runs in the Pirates' half of the final frame on a pass to Gene Clines and circuit clout by Stargell.

Padres 4, Expos 3 at San Diego (night game):
Steve Arlin batted in two runs with a single and Fred Kendall, his batterymate, drove in two more with a homer to enable the Padres to defeat the Expos, 4-3. The Expos' runs counted on round-trippers, Ken Singleton hitting for the circuit with a man on base in the first inning and John Boccabella adding a solo swat in the second. The Padres loaded the bases on two walks and an error in their half of the second and Arlin put himself back in the game with his two-run single. Kendall hit his deciding homer in the third after Dave Roberts reached base with a single.

Mets 7, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Tom Seaver drove in two runs with a double in the second inning to decide his own game as the Mets' ace righthander defeated the Giants, 7-1. Singles by Cleon Jones and Ted Martinez preceded Seaver's two-bagger. Wayne Garrett homered with two men on base in the fifth when the Mets added four more runs off Juan Marichal.

Reds 8, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Substituting pinch-hitter for pinch-hitter, the Reds scored four runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Cardinals, 8-4. Holding a 4-3 lead, the Reds opened the seventh by loading the bases on a single by Johnny Bench, an error, a sacrifice and intentional pass to Darrel Chaney. When Larry Stahl was announced as a pinch-hitter for Ross Grimsley, the Cardinals brought lefthander Al Hrabosky to the mound to replace Rick Wise. Phil Gagliano then batted for Stahl and singled. Two runs scored and a third followed across the plate on a misplay of the ball by Lou Brock in left field. Gagliano reached second on the error and then crossed the plate on a single by Pete Rose.
