Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 14, Angels 8 at Boston (day game):
Batting safely in his 16th straight game, designated hitter Orlando Cepeda had a 5-for-5 day including a homer, to set the pace as the Red Sox beat the Angels, 14-8. The Red Sox knocked out Bill Singer when Danny Cater hit for the circuit with Carl Yastrzemski and Cepeda on base in the fifth inning. Carlton Fisk greeted reliever Rich Hand with another round-tripper. Dick Pole, who was removed in the sixth after Frank Robinson hit a three-run homer for the Angels, received credit for his first major league victory. Robinson homered again for the Angels' final tally in the ninth.

Tigers 6, White Sox 2 at Detroit (day game):
Although Norm Cash was collared on a day in his honor, Gates Brown and Jim Northrup hit homers to lead the Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the White Sox. Brown hit for the circuit with a man on base in the first inning and Northrup followed with his round-tripper in the third.

Orioles 10, Royals 6 at Kansas City (day game):
A pair of four-run innings carried the Orioles to a 10-6 victory over the Royals. A homer by Earl Williams and triple by Tommy Davis each accounted for two runs in the third. The Orioles, after adding a pair in the sixth on walks and doubles by Bobby Grich and Brooks Robinson, tucked the game away in seventh. Merv Rettenmund produced one run with a double, Robinson drove in two with a single and Williams batted in the fourth run of the frame with a single. Jim Palmer, who started for the Orioles, was knocked out in the seventh but received credit for his eighth straight victory.

Brewers 10, Twins 9 at Milwaukee (day game):
George Scott, who batted in four runs with a homer and single previously in the game, drove in another run with a single in the 10th inning as the Brewers came from behind to defeat the Twins, 10-9. The Twins took the lead in the top half of the 10th when Rod Carew forced Jerry Terrell and scored on a double by Tony Oliva and a wild throw by Pedro Garcia handling the relay from the outfield. Pinch-hitter Bobby Mitchell opened the Brewers' rally with a single. Garcia sacrificed. After Johnny Briggs flied out, Bob Coluccio walked. Dave May singled, driving in the tying run, and Scott followed with a single for his fifth RBI to plate the winning tally.

A's 13, Yankees 12 at New York (day game):
The Athletics, who were trailing by six runs after six innings, rallied to defeat the Yankees, 13-12. Reggie Jackson hit a two-run homer for the A's in the first inning and Deron Johnson provided a solo swat in the sixth, but Graig Nettles batted in four runs with a single and homer to help the Yankees take an 11-5 lead. The A's began their comeback with six runs in the seventh, knocking out both Sam McDowell and Sparky Lyle. Jackson walked in the seventh and scored the tie-breaking run on an infield hit by Johnson and wild throw by Nettles. Johnson reached third on the error and counted what proved to be the deciding run on a sacrifice fly by Gene Tenace. The Yankees fell short with a homer by Jim Ray Hart in the ninth.

Indians 7, Rangers 6 at Texas (night game):
With two out in the 11th inning, Walt Williams singled and scored on a double by Chris Chambliss to give the Indians a 7-6 victory over the Rangers. The Indians bunched five straight hits for three runs in the fourth, but the Rangers picked up a run on a homer by Tom Grieve in the fifth before taking a 5-3 lead in the seventh. The Indians pulled even in the ninth when Tom Ragland walked and Buddy Bell homered. The Indians then went ahead in the 10th when Charlie Spikes beat out an infield hit, went to second on an error, stole third and scored on a wild throw by catcher Dick Billings, but Alex Johnson prolonged the contest by hitting a homer in the Rangers' half of the 10th.

Astros 3, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs went down to their eighth straight defeat, losing to the Astros, 3-2. The Cubs ended Don Wilson's string of 22 scoreless innings with a run in the third on a double by Jose Cardenal and single by Billy Williams. A safe bunt by Rick Monday, an error and single by Ron Santo added a run in the fifth. The Astros came back with the tying pair in the seventh. Lee May and Johnny Edwards singled, moved up an extra base on a throwing error by Dave Rosello and scored on a single by Tommy Helms. Jim Wynn walked in the eighth and took third on a one-out single by Cesar Cedeno, who raced to second on the throw. After an intentional pass to Bob Watson, Doug Rader rapped a grounder into the hole. Don Kessinger was able to grab the ball for a forceout at third, but Wynn scored what proved to be the Astros' winning run.

Dodgers 2, Phillies 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Three consecutive singles with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Phillies, 2-1. Greg Luzinski homered for the Phillies in the fourth and Steve Carlton protected the slim lead until the eighth when Joe Ferguson batted for Andy Messersmith and tied the score with a round-tripper. Carlton retired the first two batters in the ninth before drawing the defeat when the Dodgers scored their winning run on singles by Tom Paciorek, Steve Yeager and Davey Lopes.

Pirates 5, Braves 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Willie Stargell walked, doubled and tripled, drove in two runs and scored two as the Pirates stopped the Braves on their six-game winning streak, 5-2. Stargell drew his walk in the second and completed the journey around the bases on a single by Richie Zisk, a wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Dal Maxvill. Gene Clines singled and scored on Stargell's triple in the third. The Pirates added their three other runs in the fifth on a single by Clines, his theft of second, a single by Al Oliver, Stargell's double and a single by Zisk. Davey Johnson homered for one of the Braves' eight hits off Bob Moose.

[DH] Expos 2, Padres 0 (day game) / Padres 4, Expos 3 at San Diego (day game):
Mike Marshall, after receiving credit for his 24th save as the Expos won the first game of a doubleheader, 2-0, returned to the mound in the second game and was the loser when Dave Roberts homered in the 10th inning to give the Padres a 4-3 victory. Steve Rogers pitched the first eight innings for the Expos in the lidlifter and allowed only four hits before going out for a pinch-batter in the ninth. Marshall set down the Padres in order in their half. The Expos scored their runs in the fourth on a walk, triple by Bob Bailey and single by John Boccabella. The Padres, who had a homer by Jerry Morales in the nightcap, tied the score at 3-3 in the ninth inning on a pinch-double by Cito Gaston before Roberts won the game with his circuit clout in the 10th.

Giants 4, Mets 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Hitting a homer and double, Tito Fuentes drove in all of the Giants' runs in a 4-1 victory over the Mets. Ron Bryant, who pitched a six-hitter for the Giants, gave up the Mets' run in the fifth inning on a single by Jerry Grote, a sacrifice and an error by Gary Thomasson on Wayee Garrett's line drive to left field. The Giants came right back in their half when Bryant walked, Garry Maddox doubled and Fuentes hit his homer. Bryant walked again in the seventh, took second on a passed ball and scored the Giants' final run on Fuentes' double.

Reds 7, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
The Reds erupted for five runs in the second inning and gained a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals, who absorbed their seventh straight defeat. A double by Bobby Tolan and two walks loaded the bases before Pete Rose drove in the Reds' first two runs with a double. After a pass to Joe Morgan reloaded the sacks, Dan Driessen singled to plate two more tallies. Morgan was thrown out trying to score on a grounder by Tony Perez, but Johnny Bench then capped the Reds' outburst with a single that produced the fifth run.
