Today's scores and summaries:

A's 3, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Pitching for the first time since August 2, Blue Moon Odom allowed only five hits in 7 1/3 innings before Rollie Fingers took over to finish the Athletics' 3-1 victory over the Red Sox. Odom gave up the Red Sox run in the third on a single by Tommy Harper, a stolen base and double by Luis Aparicio. Doubles by Vic Davalillo and Dick Green and a single by Bert Campaneris sent the A's ahead in the fourth and they added their final run in the seventh when Green was hit by a pitch, Campaneris sacrificed and Bill North singled.

White Sox 5, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Terry Forster made his second consecutive start, but only the fifth of his major league career, and turned in his first complete game, pitching the White Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Brewers. Carlos May and Jorge Orta homered for the White Sox. May drove in two runs with his round-tripper in the second inning and added another RBI with a single in the sixth. By winning, the White Sox snapped their string of six straight losses to the Brewers this season and eight in a row dating back to August 26, 1972.

Tigers 9, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
After knocking out Bert Blyleven in the seventh inning, the Tigers breezed to a 9-3 victory over the Twins. Blyleven had a 2-1 lead before the Tigers erupted for three runs. Mickey Stanley and Gates Brown started the stanza with singles. The next two batters struck out, but Norm Cash walked to load the bases and Bill Freehan singled to drive in two runs. Aurelio Rodriguez followed with a single to add another counter. The Tigers scored two more runs in the eighth and three in the ninth with the aid of two errors, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

Yankees 6, Angels 0 at New York (night game):
Roy White walloped a homer from each side of the plate and Doc Medich pitched a five-hitter as the Yankees shut out the Angels, 6-0. White homered batting righthanded off Rudy May in the first inning and then hit a two-run drive swinging lefthanded against Dick Lange in the second.

Orioles 7, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Led by Don Baylor, who hit a homer, two doubles and a single, the Orioles defeated the Rangers, 7-4. Merv Rettenmund homered for the Orioles in the first inning. Baylor hit for the circuit in the second and drove in another run with a double in the fifth. Tommy Davis and Earl Williams also batted in two runs apiece. Tom Grieve hit a two-run homer for the Rangers.

Dodgers 8, Expos 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Willie Crawford drove in four runs with an infield out, homer and double to lead the Dodgers' attack in an 8-5 victory over the Expos. Lee Lacy and Bill Russell also had two hits apiece and each scored twice. Ken Singleton batted in four runs for the Expos, three coming on a homer in the first inning. Hal Breeden also hit a homer for the Expos.

Pirates 3, Reds 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Calling on Ramon Hernandez and Dave Giusti in relief, the Pirates put down a ninth-inning rally and emerged with a 3-2 victory over the Reds. Nelson Briles, who started for the Pirates, gave up a run in the first on singles by Joe Morgan and Tony Perez around a stolen base. Willie Stargell tied the score with a homer off Fred Norman in the second. The Pirates then moved ahead, 3-1, with two runs in the fourth on a single by Stargell, pass to Richie Zisk and singles by Manny Sanguillen and Rennie Stennett. Dan Driessen doubled and scored on a single by Perez to open the Reds' ninth. After Johnny Bench grounded out, Hernandez replaced Briles and struck out Bobby Tolan. Giusti, coming on, walked Phil Gagliano, but struck out Larry Stahl to end the game.

Padres 3, Mets 2 at San Diego (night game):
Derrel Thomas, whose wild throw allowed the Mets to go ahead in the eighth inning, atoned for his error with a double in the ninth as the Padres rallied for two runs to gain a 3-2 victory. Fred Kendall opened the rally with a single and gave way on the paths to Dwain Anderson. Dave Winfield singled and both runners moved up an extra base on a bobble by Cleon Jones in left field. Rich Morales hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Anderson. After Ivan Murrell struck out and Jerry Morales drew an intentional pass, Thomas doubled to drive in the winning run.

Astros 4, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals collected only five hits off Dave Roberts and lost to the Astros, 4-0, for their eighth straight defeat. Cesar Cedeno helped Roberts with a sensational catch of a line drive by Hector Cruz, crashing into the wall but holding onto the ball, to prevent a possible inside-the-park homer with a man on base in the second inning. The Astros' scoring included a homer by Jim Wynn.
