Today's scores and summaries:

A's 1, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
Darold Knowles, making his fourth start in his last six appearances since coming out of the Athletics' bullpen, pitched the first complete game and first shutout of his major league career, beating the Red Sox, 1-0. The A's run off Bill Lee scored in the sixth inning on a single by Gene Tenace, double by Roy Fosse and squeeze bunt by Dick Green.

Royals 8, Indians 5 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals defeated the Indians for the eighth straight time this season, pounding their way to an 8-5 victory. Fran Healy knocked in three runs with a double in the second inning. Lou Piniella homered in the fourth and the Royals then wrapped up the game with four runs in the sixth to end Gaylord Perry's bid for his fifth straight victory. Freddie Patek beat out an infield hit with the bases loaded to plate the first marker. Cookie Rojas followed with a two-run single and Amos Otis capped the Royals' scoring with a single to drive in their final run.

Brewers 5, White Sox 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers broke their club season attendance record and marked the occasion by defeating the White Sox, 5-4, on a homer by George Scott in the ninth inning. The crowd of 18,944 pushed the Brewers' gate total to 936,923, surpassing the former mark of 933,690 in 1970. The White Sox had a chance to break the game apart in the top half of the ninth, but had to settle for one run that tied the score at 4-4. Eddie Leon walked and Johnny Jeter singled, bringing Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound in relief. Pat Kelly singled, scoring Leon, and Jerry Hairston walked to load the bases with none out, but Rodriguez then retired the side without another run scoring. Bill Melton and Carlos May lined to second baseman Pedro Garcia and Bill Sharp grounded out.

Twins 12, Tigers 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Reaching the 1,000-hit total for his career, Rod Carew smashed four singles and a double, driving in three runs, to lead the Twins in a 12-1 rout of the Tigers. Jim Holt also drove in three runs with two doubles and two singles among the Twins' 19 hits.

Yankees 7, Angels 2 at New York (night game):
Taking advantage of an error, the Yankees erupted for five runs in the eighth lasting to defeat the Angels, 7-2. With one away, Bobby Murcer was safe on an error by Sandy Alomar. After Thurman Munson lined out, Graig Nettles cracked a homer to break a 2-2 tie. Jim Ray Hart followed with a triple to kayo Clyde Wright. Nolan Ryan relieved, but the Yankees went on to add three runs on a double by Felipe Alou, single by Gene Michael, a walk and a wild pitch before the side was retired.

Orioles 12, Rangers 10 at Texas (night game):
After collecting four hits in the previous night's game, Don Baylor belted a homer, two doubles and two singles in five trips as the Orioles outlasted the Rangers, 12-10. Baylor's nine hits in two consecutive nine-inning games tied the modern major league record. The Orioles did not decide the outcome until they scored their last three runs in the seventh inning on doubles by Baylor, Tommy Davis and Al Bumbry and a single by Rich Coggins.

Braves 6, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Braves knocked out Fergie Jenkins in the fifth inning and handed the Cubs their ninth straight defeat, 6-2. The Braves were leading, 2-1, when Jenkins walked Darrell Evans and Hank Aaron with one out in the fifth. Evans scored on a single by Dusty Baker. After Davey Johnson walked, Mike Lum singled to drive in Aaron and Baker. In a rare display of temperament, Jenkins hurled four bats onto the field from the dugout after being removed and had to be escorted into the clubhouse. The Braves' only hit in the last 4 2/3 innings was a homer by Evans off Dave LaRoche in the ninth.

Dodgers 4, Expos 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Pinch-hitting with two out in the ninth inning, Ken McMullen came through with a two-run homer to lift the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the Expos. The Pirates fell short in their half with an unearned run on singles by Stennett and Dal Maxvill and an error by Joe Morgan.

Padres 9, Mets 0 at San Diego (night game):
