Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 5, Indians 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Al Fitzmorris gained his fifth straight victory since being recalled from Omaha (American Association) July 16 when the Royals defeated the Indians, 5-1. The Royals scored their initial run in the first inning on a double by Freddie Patek and three walks issued by Tom Timmerman. The Indians matched with a run in the fourth on singles by Chris Chambliss and John Lowenstein around an infield out. The Royals broke the tie in their half of the fourth on doubles by Lou Piniella and Fran Healy. Amos Otis homered in the fifth and the Royals breezed the rest of the way.

Brewers 5, White Sox 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
For the third time in four games, Eduardo Rodriguez was the winning pitcher in relief when the Brewers defeated the White Sox, 5-4, on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Briggs with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning. Dave May and George Scott opened the stanza with singles. Don Money fouled out, but Ollie Brown walked before Briggs lofted his fly.

Twins 9, Tigers 7 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins triumphed in a slugfest marked by six homers when Larry Hisle hit for the circuit with a man on base in the eighth inning to beat the Tigers, 9-7. The Twins took a 5-0 lead in the first inning, three runs scoring on a round-tripper by Bobby Darwin and another on a solo swat by Steve Brye. The Tigers came back with a five-run explosion in the fifth on a homer by Norm Cash and a grand slam by Al Kaline. The Twins broke the tie and were ahead, 7-6, going into the eighth when Ed Brinkman homered for the Tigers to forge a new deadlock, but a single by Darwin and Hisle's homer gave the decision to the Twins.

Angels 3, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
Capitalizing on an error, the Angels scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Yankees, 3-1. Bob Oliver was safe on a wide throw by Graig Nettles and took second when Mike Epstein grounded out. Richie Scheinblum drew an intentional pass and was forced by Tommy McCraw. Winston Llenas batted for Jeff Torborg and singled, driving in pinch-runner Billy Parker to break a 1-1 tie. Sandy Alomar followed with another single for an insurance run. As a result, the Angels were able to beat Mel Stottlemyre for the first time since June 30, 1967, after 11 straight losses to the Yankees' righthander.

Orioles 5, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Dave McNally, who was a master of the former Washington Senators, continued his hold on their Texas successors by pitching the Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Rangers. The triumph was the lefthander's 17th straight over the Washington-Texas franchises in a string that started April 12, 1969, including two victories over the Rangers in 1972 and two this year. The Orioles' support of McNally included a two-run homer by Earl Williams. Bill Sudakis homered to save the Rangers from being shutout.

Braves 15, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Braves piled up 19 hits, including homers by Darrell Evans and Davey Johnson, to annihilate the Cubs, 15-1. Every Braves' starter had at least one hit, all but Phil Niekro scored at least once and everyone except Marty Perez batted in at least one run. The Cubs, who went down to their 10th straight defeat, picked up their lone run when Rico Carty singled in the fourth inning for his first hit in a Chicago uniform and crossed the plate on Ron Santo's first triple of the season.

Dodgers 7, Expos 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bill Buckner and Steve Garvey collected three hits apiece to lead the Dodgers' attack in a 7-2 victory over the Expos. Buckner's blows included a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Reds 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Tony Perez broke up a pitchers' duel between Jack Billingham and Dock Ellis by driving in a run with a single in the ninth inning to give the Reds a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. Joe Morgan singled, stole second and, after an intentional pass to Dan Driessen, scored on Perez' single.

Mets 7, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Jerry Grote hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career and Tom Seaver allowed only two infield singles as the Mets defeated the Padres, 7-0. Wayne Garrett started the Mets' scoring with a homer on Steve Arlin's first pitch of the game. In the fourth, John Milner walked, Cleon Jones singled and Ken Boswell was safe on an error to load the bases. After Don Hahn walked to force in Milner, Grote hit his grand slam. Jones also homered in the fifth for the Mets' last run.

Giants 11, Phillies 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Staked to a three-run lead on a homer by Willie McCovey in the first inning, Juan Marichal pitched the Giants to an 11-2 victory over the Phillies. Garry Maddox singled and Bobby Bonds was hit by a pitch ahead of McCovey's blow off Wayne Twitchell. The Giants iced the game with six runs in the sixth inning, two scoring on a triple by Tito Fuentes. Bob Boone hit a double and homer for the Phillies and scored both their runs.

Astros 3, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Jerry Reuss yielded only five hits in pitching the Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals. The Astros scored twice off Rick Wise in the sixth inning on a single by Roger Metzger and doubles by Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson. Doug Rader doubled and Tommy Helms singled for the wrap-up run in the ninth.
