A's 6, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
Vida Blue allowed only four hits, pitching his fourth straight complete game, and Reggie Jackson smashed two homers, driving in four runs, as the Athletics defeated the Red Sox, 6-3. The Red Sox ended a string of 21 scoreless innings with two unearned runs in the eighth and added their other tally on a homer by Carlton Fisk in the ninth.

Indians 10, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Indians ended their string of nine straight losses to the Royals this season by erupting for 16 hits to gain a 10-4 victory. Ron Lolich drove in four runs with two doubles and a single. Chris Chambliss, hitting safely in his 17th straight game, rapped a homer and single.

Braves 10, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Hank Aaron hit the 702nd homer of his career, connecting with two men on base in the eighth inning, when the Braves exploded for nine runs to hand the Cubs their 11th straight defeat, 10-2. Bob Locker, pitching in relief of Milt Pappas, walked Aaron and Dusty Baker with one out. Frank Tepedino drove in two runs with a double to tie the score at 2-2. Sonny Jackson singled to send the Braves ahead. Dick Dietz singled to kayo Locker. Jack Aker relieved and failed to retire a batter. Ralph Garr doubled to drive in two runs and scored himself on a single by Mike Lum. After a pass to Darrell Evans, Aaron unloaded his three-run homer.

Giants 2, Phillies 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Tom Bradley gained his first victory since July 13, after losing four decisions, when the Giants edged the Phillies, 2-1. The Giants scored in the second inning on a double by Willie McCovey and single by Ed Goodson. Gary Matthews singled in the fourth, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by Bob Boone and counted on a sacrifice fly by Gary Thomasson. Boone homered for the Phillies' run in the fifth. Bradley was removed after Del Unser singled to open the ninth and Elias Sosa took over to finish the game.
