Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, White Sox 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Twenty-game winner Wilbur Wood gave up five runs in the second inning and drew his 18th defeat when the Orioles beat the White Sox, 8-2. The Orioles scored their first run without the benefit of a hit on a pass to Don Baylor, a stolen base, infield out and passed ball. But Boog Powell then singled, Andy Etchebarren and Mark Belanger walked and Merv Rettenmund and Tommy Davis singled, driving in two runs apiece.

Red Sox 4, Royals 3 at Boston (day game):
After six tries, Bill Lee succeeded in gaining his 13th victory when the Red Sox defeated the Royals, 4-3, with the aid of two unearned runs. The Red Sox earned their initial pair in the third inning. Dwight Evans walked, moved up on an infield out and scored on a single by Luis Aparicio, who took second on the throw and crossed the plate on a double by Danny Cater. However, an error by Lou Piniella in the sixth and another by Kurt Bevacqua in the seventh tainted the Red Sox' last two tallies. Fran Healy drove in all three Royal runs with a homer, double and single.

Tigers 4, Angels 3 at California (day game):
A wild pitch by Aurelio Monteagudo with two out in the 11th inning allowed Mickey Stanley to score and handed the Tigers a 4-3 victory over the Angels. The Tigers' first three runs came on homers. Stanley and Tony Taylor connected in succession in the third and Frank Howard added a round-tripper in the eighth. After the Angels forced the game into overtime, Stanley singled in the 11th and took third on a single by Taylor before Monteagudo lost the game with his wild pitch.

[DH] Indians 5, Twins 3 (day game) / Indians 4, Twins 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Ken Sanders, who was with the Twins before being sold on waivers August 3, saved one game and won another when the Indians defeated his former teammates in a doubleheader, 5-3 and 4-3. Buddy Bell provided the Indians' big blow in the opener, smashing a three-run homer in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Sanders relieved after the Twins scored their third run in the eighth. Sanders was on the mound again in relief in the nightcap when the Indians scored their winning run in the ninth inning on a pass to Jack Brohamer, sacrifice by Rusty Torres and single by Leo Cardenas.

A's 6, Brewers 4 at Oakland (day game):
Deron Johnson hit a grand-slam in the first inning and Sal Bando homered with a man on base in the ninth to power the Athletics to a 6-4 victory over the Brewers. Catfish Hunter made his first appearance for the A's since being injured in the All-Star Game July 24 and gave up two runs in the third on a double by Bob Coluccio and homer by Pedro Garcia. Hunter was lifted in the sixth and Darold Knowles, who relieved, was tagged for a score-tying double by Darrell Porter.

Yankees 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Bobby Murcer led off the second inning with a homer and Gene Michael added a two-run double to start the Yankees off to a 6-2 victory over the Rangers. After Murcer's homer, Graig Nettles walked, Thurman Munson singled and Michael drove them home with his two-bagger. Murcer also singled in the third when the Yankees scored twice and accounted for an RBI with a run-producing grounder in the fifth. Jim Spencer homered for the Rangers.

Dodgers 2, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
In a dramatic turn of events, Joe Ferguson hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning to carry the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Ron Santo homered for the Cubs' run in the fifth. Rick Reuschel, who struck out 13, did not yield a hit until Willie Crawford and Ron Cey singled in the eighth. With one out in the ninth, Bill Buckner singled for the Dodgers' third hit. Willie Davis then flied out before Ferguson smashed his homer.

Phillies 5, Astros 3 at Houston (day game):
Bill Robinson hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to account for the Phillies' scoring in a 5-3 victory over the Astros. Robinson's jackpot wallop came off Jerry Reuss in the third inning after Cesar Tovar and Billy Grabarkewitz singled and Greg Luzinski walked to load the bases.

Expos 3, Braves 1 at Montreal (day game):
Mike Marshall gained his 25th save of the season, in relief of winner Balor Moore, as the Expos defeated the Braves, 3-1. Pepe Mangual homered for the Expos in the second inning. Bob Bailey doubled and Ken Singleton singled for another run in the fifth. After the Braves counted on a single by Ralph Garr and triple by Darrell Evans in the sixth, the Expos came back with their last run on a double by Tim Foli, an infield out and a passed ball.

Mets 2, Reds 1 at New York (day game):
Bud Harrelson, who returned to the Mets' lineup in the previous day's game after having been on the disabled list since August 1, scored one run and drove in another to enable Jerry Koosman to defeat the Reds, 2-1. Harrelson doubled in the first inning, advanced on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Willie Mays. After the Reds tied the score with an unearned run in the fifth, Don Hahn singled for the Mets in the eighth and scored the deciding run on another double by Harrelson.

Pirates 5, Giants 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Jim Rooker yielded only five hits and pitched the Pirates to a 5-0 victory over the Giants. Richie Hebner and Al Oliver decided the outcome with back-to-back homers off Juan Marichal in the first inning. Hebner also batted in another run with a single in the fifth and Manny Sanguillen drove in the last two tallies with a double in the sixth.

Cardinals 1, Padres 0 at St. Louis (day game):
The Cardinals scored an unearned run in the first inning and Alan Foster made the tally stand up for a 1-0 victory over the Padres in a duel with Bill Greif. Lou Brock led off with a single and was forced by Bake McBride. After Bernie Carbo walked, Ted Simmons grounded to first baseman Nate Colbert, who threw to second, forcing Carbo, but shortstop Dwain Anderson made a wild throw in attempting to complete the double play, allowing McBride to score.
