Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 4, Twins 3 at Baltimore (night game):
A single by Brooks Robinson for the 2,500th hit of his major league career helped the Orioles rally for three runs in the ninth to defeat the Twins, 4-3. A pass to Tommy Davis and singles by Boog Powell and Paul Blair produced the first run. Robinson's hit tied the score. After a sacrifice by Earl Williams and intentional pass to Bobby Grich, Blair scored the winning run, beating the throw home when Merv Rettenmund grounded to Dan Monzon.
Royals 6, Yankees 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Freddie Patek drove in two runs with a single and later stole home as the Royals scored four times in the second inning to defeat the Yankees, 6-2. Ed Kirkpatrick doubled and counted the Royals' first run on a single by Kurt Bevacqua. Fran Healy singled Bevacqua to third and took second himself on a fumble by Roy White. Patek followed with his two-run single. Cookie Rojas singled, sending Patek to third. Rojas then broke for second, drawing a throw from catcher Thurman Munson, and Patek stole home, helped by a poor return of the ball by second baseman Horace Clarke.
A's 7, Tigers 2 at Oakland (night game):
Gene Tenace drove in four runs with two homers in support of Vida Blue, who pitched the Athletics to a 7-2 victory over the Tigers. Tenace's first homer accounted for three of the A's five runs off Jim Perry in the first inning. After Tenace added a solo swat in the third, the Tigers scored their pair on a single by Frank Howard and homer by Dick Sharon in the fifth. The A's came back in the home half with their last run on a round-tripper by Sal Bando.
Red Sox 5, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
The Red Sox smashed four homers, two of them by Carlton Fisk, who connected for the second time with a man on base in the ninth inning to defeat the Rangers, 5-4. Tommy Harper homered for the Red Sox in the first inning. Fisk and Dwight Evans followed with drives in the fifth before Danny Cater walked and Fisk hit his game-winning blow in the ninth. Jeff Burroughs had a two-run homer for the Rangers.
Astros 10, Pirates 2 at Houston (night game):
J.R. Richard pitched a two-hitter and Bob Watson whacked a grand-slam homer as the Astros defeated the Pirates, 10-2. The Astros scored their first four runs off Dock Ellis in the fourth inning, but all were unearned as the result of an error by Rennie Stennett. Doug Rader singled in one run and Lee May homered for three others. In the next inning, Richard and Bob Gallagher singled and Roger Metzger walked to force the exit of Ellis. John Lamb relieved and was the victim of Watson's slam.
Giants 6, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
A triple by Gary Matthews in the 11th inning sent the Giants on their way to a 6-4 victory over the Expos. After hitting his triple, Matthews scored when second baseman Larry Lintz dropped the ball as the middleman on the throw from the outfield. The Giants then made that run earned and added another with three singles and an infield out. Ron Fairly twice kept the Expos in the game with two homers, tying the score at 3-3 in the eighth inning and 4-4 in the 10th. The Giants' victory was their 11th without a defeat in extra-inning games this season.
Reds 8, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Breaking up a marathon game, the Reds erupted for five runs in the 16th inning and defeated the Mets, 8-3. With one out, Denis Menke singled and took third on a single by Tony Perez. The Mets then gambled, allowing lefthander Tug McGraw to pitch to Johnny Bench, who bats righhanded. Bench promptly singled, scoring Menke to break the tie. McGraw then walked Larry Stahl to load the bases. Harry Parker relieved and before the side was retired the Reds added four runs on a single by Cesar Geronimo and triple by Ed Crosby.
