Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 2, Twins 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A double by Bobby Grich, single by Mark Belanger and sacrifice fly by Al Bumbry in the ninth provided the Orioles' winning run in a 2-1 victory over the Twins. Steve Brye scored the Twins' run in the fourth, hitting a double and coming around on a wild pitch and infield out. The Orioles tied the score in the sixth with singles by Tommy Davis and Boog Powell and a sacrifice fly by Merv Rettenmund. Jim Palmer, who was seeking his 10th straight victory, was forced to leave the game after seven innings because of a cut on his right thumb and Grant Jackson was the Orioles' winner in relief.
Brewers 6, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan struck out eight batters, bringing his season's total to 296, before the Angels' speedballer was knocked out in the sixth inning in a 6-2 loss to the Brewers. After taking a 2-0 lead with singletons in the fourth and fifth, the Brewers erupted for four runs in the sixth. George Scott and Darrell Porter walked and both scored on a double by Johnny Briggs. Bobby Mitchell then added two more runs with a homer.
White Sox 4, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
With one out to go, Stan Bahnsen was deprived of a no-hitter when Walt Williams singled for the Indians' only hit in a 4-0 loss to the White Sox. Bahnsen, who walked Dave Duncan twice and otherwise kept the Indians off base, retired John Lowenstein and Buddy Bell in the ninth inning before Williams spoiled his no-hit bid. Jorge Orta had four hits for the White Sox, including a homer.
Royals 5, Yankees 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Amos Otis doubled in the fifth inning and, with two out, scored the tie-breaking run on a single by Lou Piniella to give the Royals a 5-4 victory over the Yankees. Horace Clarke had tied the score at 4-4 with a homer in the top half of the fifth.
Tigers 6, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
The Athletics were stopped on their nine-game winning streak with a 6-4 loss to the Tigers. Mickey Stanley led the Tigers with two triples and a single. Stanley's first triple, singles by Tony Taylor and Al Kaline, an error by Ken Holtzman and infield out by Frank Howard netted three runs in the first inning. Singles by Kaline and Howard around an infield out added a tally in the third before Stanley accounted for the Tigers' winning margin with RBIs on a single in the fourth and triple in the sixth. The A's scored their first three runs off Woodie Fryman, but John Hiller relieved with none out in the fifth and yielded only one run the rest of the way on a walk and singles by Deron Johnson and Jesus Alou in the eighth.
Red Sox 15, Rangers 9 at Texas (night game):
Reggie Smith batted in five runs and Dwight Evans and Luis Aparicio knocked in three apiece to pace the Red Sox to a 15-9 victory over the Rangers. Evans and Smith each homered with a man on base in the second inning. Evans hit a double and Smith rapped a single, picking up an RBI apiece, when the Red Sox made it 9-0 in the third. The Rangers came back with six runs in the next three innings. Toby Harrah hit a homer and Tom Grieve drove in five runs with a double and homer. The Red Sox broke the game apart with six runs in the ninth. Walks and singles by Rick Miller and Doug Griffin produced one tally. After Evans walked to fill the bases, Aparicio cleared the sacks with a double and Smith followed with his second homer of the game. The Rangers counted three times in their half, two runs scoring on a homer by Bill Sudakis.
Braves 11, Cardinals 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Rick Wise hit a grand-slam homer to climax a seven-run outburst by the Cardinals in the third inning, but the Braves came pounding back to gain an 11-7 victory. After the Cardinals' outburst, the Braves scored six runs in their half of the third on a single by Ralph Garr, error by Joe Torre, single by Hank Aaron, double by Dusty Baker and homer by Davey Johnson. Mike Lum tied the score at 7-7 with a homer in the fifth and the Braves went on from there to go ahead with two more runs on singles by Darrell Evans and Aaron and a double by Baker. In the sixth, Lum singled, Evans tripled and Aaron doubled to wrap up the decision.
Cubs 6, Reds 4 at Chicago (day game):
Fergie Jenkins, who had lost three straight decisions, gained his first victory since July 31 when the Cubs defeated the Reds, 6-4. The Cubs were ahead, 4-2, going into the seventh inning, but Jenkins lost his lead when Pete Rose singled and Joe Morgan homered. However, in the Cubs' half, Rick Monday and Billy Williams walked and Rico Carty singled to break the tie. Jenkins then provided himself with an insurance run with a single in the eighth after Jose Cardenal walked and Paul Popovich sacrificed.
Pirates 6, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
The Pirates collected only three hits off Don Wilson in seven innings, but took advantage of the righthander's wildness to defeat the Astros, 6-3. Richie Hebner singled and scored on a double by Willie Stargell in the fourth. Stargell then took third and scored on two wild pitches by Wilson. In the sixth, John Morlan and Gene Clines walked. After a pickoff error by Wilson, Morlan came home on a sacrifice fly by Hebner. Clines took third and crossed the plate on Wilson's third wild pitch of the game. Johnny Edwards and Lee May hit homers for the Astros.
Giants 3, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Dave Rader, working in the battery with Ron Bryant, hit two sacrifice flies to enable the Giants' lefthander to defeat the Expos, 3-1, for his 19th victory. Dave Kingman walked in the second inning, stole second, took third on a wild pitch by Steve Renko and scored the Giants' initial run on Rader's first sacrifice fly. After the Giants added an unearned run in the seventh, Rader hit his second sacrifice fly following singles by Garry Maddox and Mike Phillips in the eighth.
Mets 2, Dodgers 1 at New York (night game):
Allowing only four hits in his seventh start for the Mets this season, Ray Sadecki turned in his first complete game since September 13, 1971, and defeated the Dodgers, 2-1. Bill Russell homered for the Dodgers' run in the fifth inning. The Mets tied the score in the eighth with a walk to John Milner, safe bunt by Ed Kranepool, sacrifice by Jerry Grote and sacrifice fly by Don Hahn. Wayne Garrett walked in the ninth and advanced on an infield out. After an intentional pass to Rusty Staub, Milner singled to drive in the winning run.
Phillies 9, Padres 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
Capping a four-run rally, del Unser doubled with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning to bring the Phillies a 9-8 victory over the Padres. Cesar Tovar and Denny Doyle opened the Phillies' outburst with singles. After Tovar scored on a wild pitch, Bill Robinson beat out an infield hit with two away and Bob Boone walked to load the bases for Unser, who cleared the sacks with his double.
