Today's scores and summaries:
Mets 6, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Mets beat the Cubs, 6-4, in a late morning contest that was supposed to have been the first game of a doubleheader, but after the Mets clinched the N. L. Eastern Division championship with their victory, the second game was called due to wet grounds. The Mets got a home run from Cleon Jones off loser Burt Hooton in the second inning, then two more in the fourth on Jerry Grote's two-run single and made it 5-0 in the fifth. Tom Seaver was sent to the showers in the seventh when a two-run homer by Rick Monday reduced the New York margin to 6-4. Tug McGraw got the last nine outs.
Padres 4, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Knowing by mid-game that they had been eliminated from the N. L. Eastern Division pennant race, the Pirates fell to the Padres, 4-3, and settled for third place before the smallest Pittsburgh crowd of the year, 2,572. Rookie southpaw Randy Jones earned his seventh victory for the Padres, who broke a 3-3 tie and scored the winning run on a double by Jones shortly after the news of the Mets' win over the Cubs in Chicago was announced on the scoreboard.
