Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Serving as the designated hitter, Al Kaline rapped three singles and drove in two runs, including the tally that gave the Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Orioles in 10 innings. Jim Northrup, who doubled with two out, scored the winning run on Kaline's third hit.

Angels 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
With the help of a wild throw and wild pitch, the Angels scored the tie-breaking run in the ninth inning to defeat the White Sox, 3-2. Ellie Rodriguez drew a pass with one out and advanced to second when catcher Ed Herrmann made a bad throw on a pickoff attempt. Following an infield out by Dave Chalk, Rodriguez took third on a wild pitch by Stan Bahnsen and scored on a single by Mickey Rivers.

Royals 23, Twins 6 at Kansas City (day game):
The Royals established a club record for most runs scored in a game by overwhelming the Twins, 23-6. John Mayberry batted in five runs with two doubles and two singles, while Hal McRae drove in four with a homer, single and double. The Royals' former mark for runs was 16.

Brewers 5, Red Sox 4 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers rallied in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on a double by Bob Coluccio and two on a homer by Pedro Garcia, to defeat the Red Sox, 5-4.

Yankees 6, Indians 1 at New York (day game):
Opening a two-year stay at Shea Stadium while their own park was being rehabilitated, the Yankees defeated the Indians, 6-1, before a crowd of 20,744. The new anti-spitball rule was invoked for the first time when umpire Marty Springstead called a ball on Indians' starter Gaylord Perry for throwing what appeared to be an illegal pitch. Graig Nettles homered with a man on base for the Yankees to start their scoring in the fourth inning.

Rangers 2, A's 0 at Texas (night game):
Fergie Jenkins, six times a 20-game winner with the Cubs, made his debut with the Rangers and pitched a one-hitter to defeat the Athletics, 2-0. The A's only hit was a safe bunt by Bert Campaneris in the fourth inning. The Rangers scored both their runs in the fifth on a double by Jim Sundberg, singles by Toby Harrah and Alex Johnson and an infield out by Jeff Burroughs.

Reds 7, Braves 5 at Cincinnati (day game):
While Hank Aaron sat idle, Tony Perez and Johnny Bench stepped into the slugging spotlight with consecutive homers in the seventh inning to power the Reds to a 7-5 victory over the Braves.

Dodgers 8, Padres 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Following the example set by Don Sutton in the Dodgers' opening game, Tommy John also pitched a shutout and defeated the Padres, 8-0. Jim Wynn led the Dodgers at bat with three hits and drove in three runs, two of his RBIs coming on a homer in the fifth inning.

Phillies 5, Mets 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
Providing a dramatic finish for the opening-day crowd of 40,222, Mike Schmidt hit a homer with a man on base in the ninth inning to give the Phillies a 5-4 victory over the Mets. Tom Seaver, who started for the Mets, had a 3-1 lead in his duel with Steve Carlton until the Phillies tied the score in the sixth inning with the help of singles by Larry Bowa and Del Unser and a double by Greg Luzinski. Tug McGraw was on the Mets' mound in relief of Seaver when Schmidt hit his homer to score behind Billy Grabarkewitz, pinch-running for Tony Taylor, who had walked.

Giants 3, Astros 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Steve Ontiveros, Giants' rookie first baseman, smashed a 2-2 tie with a homer in the fourth inning to beat the Astros, 3-2. The Astros scored their runs in the first on doubles by Roger Metzger and Cesar Cedeno around a single by Milt May. The Giants matched that with a pair in their half of the first. Chris Speier was hit by a pitch, took third on a single by Garry Maddox and scored on an infield out by Gary Matthews. Maddox then stole third and crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Tom Griffin.

Cardinals 8, Pirates 0 at St. Louis (day game):
Sonny Siebert, making his N. L. debut with the Cardinals, pitched a four-hitter and shut out the Pirates, 8-0. Last year in 25 starts with the Rangers and two with the Red Sox, Siebert turned in only one complete game. The veteran righthander also joined in the Cardinals' attack with a two-run single.
