Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 5, Tigers 1 (day game) / Tigers 8, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (day game):
Ross Grimsley, who was acquired from the Reds, made his A. L. debut by pitching the Orioles to a 5-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Tigers came back to score four runs in the 10th inning and win the second game, 8-4. In the opener, the Orioles scored all their runs in the first inning, with the aid of doubles by Bobby Grich and Andy Etchebarren. After Grimsley lost his bid for a shutout on an error in the ninth, Bob Reynolds relieved and fanned Mickey Stanley for the final out. The Tigers broke the nightcap apart at the expense of Grant Jackson, scoring their four runs in the 10th on a walk and singles by Willie Horton, Norm Cash, Bill Freehan and Ed Brinkman.

Angels 4, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Angels and White Sox played to a 4-4 tie in a game called after 10 innings because of heavy snow flurries and 37-degree temperature. Although the contest was to be replayed in its entirety at a later date, individual performances counted in the statistics. The Angels, who had three hits apiece by Bobby Valentine and Leroy Stanton, failed to hold a 4-1 lead. The White Sox rallied for two runs in the eighth and tied the score in the ninth when Ken Henderson doubled and Carlos May singled for his third hit of the game.

Yankees 7, Indians 1 at New York (day game):
Settling down after a shaky start, Pat Dobson pitched the Yankees to a 7-1 victory over the Indians. Before retiring a batter in the first inning, Dobson gave up the Indians' run on a walk and singles by Oscar Gamble and George Hendrick. The Yankees came back immediately, scoring twice on a triple by Roy White, infield out by Mike Hegan and homer by Thurman Munson, and Dobson stayed the rest of the way, allowing only three hits in the final seven innings.

A's 8, Rangers 4 at Texas (day game):
A great slugging performance by Reggie Jackson, who drove in seven runs with two homers and a single, enabled the Athletics to defeat the Rangers, 8-4. Jackson accounted for the game's first run with a single in the first inning and then hit for the circuit with two men on base in both the fifth and ninth innings.

Braves 5, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Acting on orders from Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, the Braves put Hank Aaron in their starting lineup, but the superstar failed to contribute anything in a 5-3 victory over the Reds. Aaron struck out twice against Clay Kirby and grounded out on his third appearance at the plate before leaving the game after seven innings. The Braves decided the outcome with four runs in the third. After the Braves loaded the bases, one run scored when Mike Lum grounded into a forceout at second. Darrell Evans then stepped up and smashed a three-run homer.

Dodgers 9, Padres 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Led at bat by Jim Wynn and Ron Cey, the Dodgers defeated the Padres, 9-2, to complete the sweep of the three-game series. Wynn whacked his third homer in three games and also rapped a double and single, giving him seven hits in his first 13 at-bats. Cey hit two doubles and two singles, driving in three runs. Steve Garvey joined in the attack with a two-run homer. The Padres, who were shut out in the first two games of the series, finally ended their drouth when Willie McCovey singled to drive a run across in the sixth inning. Fred Kendall added a homer off Andy Messersmith in the seventh.

Mets 9, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
Erupting for all their runs in the last two innings, the Mets defeated the Phillies, 9-2. A walk and singles by Cleon Jones, Dave Schneck, Jerry Grote and Bud Harrelson, together with an error by Bill Robinson, produced four runs in the eighth. The Mets counted five more in the ninth, three on a homer by Grote.

Giants 8, Astros 4 at San Francisco (day game):
After scoring four times in the first inning, the Giants added four tainted tallies in the next two stanzas and defeated the Astros, 8-4. Two were out in the first when the Giants exploded with a single by Garry Maddox, triple by Gary Matthews, walk to Steve Ontiveros and homer by Dave Kingman. The Giants' remaining runs -- one in the second and three in the third -- were unearned. Doug Rader homered for the Astros and Greg Gross hit four singles in five trips.
