Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Tigers 3 at Boston (day game):
Hitting the first grand-slam of his major league career, Bernie Carbo started the Red Sox off to a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Tommy Harper doubled in the first inning and Carl Yastrzemski and Bob Montgomery walked to load the bases before Carbo connected for his drive off Lerrin LaGrow.

Angels 15, White Sox 1 at California (night game):
Setting a new club scoring standard for Anaheim Stadium, the Angels walloped the White Sox, 15-1, with a 16-hit attack that included a single and homer by Frank Robinson, who drove in three runs. Mickey Rivers and Dave Chalk also accounted for three RBIs apiece. The White Sox committed six errors, three by Bill Melton, who accounted for their only run with a circuit clout in the fourth inning.

Indians 9, Yankees 1 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians, who had lost five straight games since the start of the season, gained their first victory when Gaylord Perry pitched a four-hitter and beat the Yankees, 9-1. The Indians erupted for six of their runs in the fourth inning. After Frank Duffy homered with two men on base, three walks loaded the bases and other runs followed on a balk and a single by John Ellis. Buddy Bell added a homer for the Tribe in the eighth.

Orioles 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Two runs that scored on wild pitches helped the Orioles defeat the Brewers, 5-3. After taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning, the Orioles loaded the bases in the fourth when Boog Powell and Don Baylor singled and Earl Williams walked. Jim Slaton then uncorked two wild pitches, allowing Powell and Baylor to score. Williams followed across the plate on a sacrifice fly by Mark Belanger. The Brewers' only scoring foray produced three runs in the fifth on singles by Robin Yount and Ken Berry, doubles by Don Money and Dave May and a sacrifice fly by George Scott.

Reds 14, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A grand slam by Merv Rettenmund highlighted a six-run outburst by the Reds in the seventh inning of a 14-2 victory over the Braves. Pete Rose and Joe Morgan singled and Dan Driessen forced Rose to allow the first run to score before a double by Tony Perez and intentional pass to Johnny Bench set the stage for Rettenmund's homer off Tom House. Dave Concepcion, who had four hits in the game, followed with a double and counted the sixth run of the inning on an error by Craig Robinson.

Astros 5, Dodgers 3 at Houston (night game):
Claude Osteen, facing his former teammates for the first time, needed help from Ken Forsch to come out a winner when the Astros defeated the Dodgers, 5-3. The Dodgers had a 2-1 lead against Osteen until Lee May homered off Al Downing with two men on base in the sixth inning. The Dodgers picked up a run off Osteen in the eighth before Forsch took over, but Doug Rader assured the Astros' victory with a scoring single in their half.

Cardinals 7, Pirates 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Reggie Smith singled in the 11th inning for his fourth hit of the game and drove in Tim McCarver to give the Cardinals a 7-6 victory over the Pirates. McCarver reached base with a pinch-single and took third on a single by Lou Brock before Smith delivered the deciding hit. The Pirates took a 4-0 lead with the aid of a three-run homer by Dave Parker, but then fell behind before Richie Zisk tied the score with a circuit clout in the ninth to send the game into overtime.

Padres 3, Giants 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres, who had given up 80 hits and 52 runs while losing their first six games of the season, got six-hit pitching from Steve Arlin and Vicente Romo to defeat the Giants, 3-2. The Giants stepped off to a 2-0 lead, but the Padres pulled even in the fifth inning when Fred Kendall and Dave Roberts singled, Enzo Hernandez sacrificed and Bobby Tolan singled. Johnny Grubb singled in the seventh, moved up on a bunt by Kendall and scored the winning run on a single by Roberts.
