Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 8, Tigers 1 at Boston (day game):
Staked to a six-run lead in the first inning, Rick Wise breezed to victory in his first A. L. start for the Red Sox, beating the Tigers, 8-1. Tommy Harper doubled and Rick Miller walked to start things for the Red Sox, but the next two batters went out before the fireworks exploded with a single by Bob Montgomery, double by Bernie Carbo, pass to Dick McAuliffe, triple by Doug Griffin and single by Pedro Guerrero.

White Sox 5, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Defeated twice while the White Sox were losing their first five games of the season, Wilbur Wood turned things around with a six-hitter and beat the Angels, 5-4. The White Sox took a 3-2 lead on a homer by Buddy Bradford in the fifth inning and then added two runs in the seventh on a walk to Eddie Leon, forceout by Ed Herrmann, sacrifice fly by Buddy Bradford and triple by Ken Henderson. Mike Epstein homered in the Angels' half and another run followed on a double by Leroy Stanton, an infield out and sacrifice fly by Winston Llenas before Wood clamped down to preserve his victory.

Indians 8, Yankees 5 at Cleveland (day game):
Dave Duncan hit a homer to lead off a parade of 12 batters as the Indians scored eight runs in the third inning to defeat the Yankees, 8-5. After Duncan's blow, a walk to Frank Duffy, double by John Lowenstein, pass to George Hendrick, single by John Ellis, walk to Chris Chambliss and double by Buddy Bell produced four more runs before Duncan came up for the second time and singled to score Chambliss. Duffy then doubled to drive in Bell before Duncan scored the eighth run on an error.

Brewers 3, Orioles 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Although only 18 years old, Robin Yount showed a veteran's coolness when the Brewers' rookie shortstop atoned for his error by hitting a homer in the eighth inning to defeat the Orioles, 3-2. Pedro Garcia batted in the Brewers' first two runs with a single in the seventh, but Paul Blair opened the eighth with a homer for the Orioles for only their second hit off Kevin Kobel, 20-year-old lefthander. Eduardo Rodriguez relieved and the Orioles then tied the score on a single by Mike Reinbach, a sacrifice, infield out and Yount's error on a grounder by Bobby Grich.

Royals 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (day game):
After Freddie Patek doubled to lead off the 10th inning, the next two batters flied out but Vada Pinson then came through with a run-scoring single to give the Royals a 6-5 victory over the Twins. Paul Schaal hit a two-run homer for the Royals and John Mayberry accounted for two RBIs with a homer and single. Tony Oliva, the Twins' designated hitter, rapped four hits including a triple with the bases loaded.

Rangers 10, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
The Rangers, making it a blue day for Vida Blue, scored four runs in the first inning and added four more in the second en route to a 10-3 victory over the Athletics. A walk to Dave Nelson, singles by Toby Harrah and Alex Johnson and homer by Jeff Burroughs accounted for the Rangers' initial burst. Blue was knocked out in the second as the Rangers put together singles by Nelson, Harrah and Johnson, an intentional pass to Burroughs and single by Jim Fregosi. Tom Grieve homered with a man on base for the Rangers' last two runs in the ninth. Gene Tenace hit two homers for the A's.

Braves 10, Reds 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Davey Johnson, Marty Perez and Mike Lum smashed homers among the Braves' 13 hits in a 10-3 victory over the Reds. Johnson hit his homer with two men on base. Ralph Garr also drove in three runs with a double and triple. Dave Concepcion had the only telling blow for the Reds, connecting for the circuit with two aboard and two out in the eighth inning.

[DH] Cubs 7, Expos 4 (day game) / Expos 13, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Ron Fairly hit the fifth grand slam of his major league career, climaxing an eight-run uprising in the fourth inning, as the Expos gained a 13-3 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Cubs, who won the opener, 7-4. An error, singles by Jim Cox and Terry Humphrey, a pass to Mike Torrez with the bases loaded and singles by Ron Hunt and Tim Foli produced the first four runs in the Expos' big inning. After an infield out, Ken Singleton was passed purposely to get at Fairly, who hit Mike Paul's next pitch for the Expos' first homer of the season. In the first game, Ken Frailing was the Cubs' winner, receiving credit for his first major league victory. The rookie southpaw shut out the Expos until the ninth inning when Ray Burris had to come in to stop a four-run rally. Billy Williams drove in two of the Cubs' runs with a homer and double. Bill Madlock also had two hits and two RBIs.

Dodgers 6, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
The Dodgers escorted Don Sutton to his third straight victory by scoring five runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Astros, 6-3. After Steve Garvey singled to drive in the first run, Bill Russell walked to load the bases. Davey Lopes followed with a single to send two runs across the plate and Bill Buckner added two more with a double.

Cardinals 6, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Lynn McGlothen, making his first N. L. start, needed help in the ninth inning but received credit for the victory when the Cardinals defeated the Pirates, 6-4. Three of the Cardinals' runs were unearned on errors by Ed Kirkpatrick and Dal Maxvill as the Pirates went down to their sixth straight setback. Rennie Stennett batted in all four of the Pirates' runs with a double, homer and sacrifice fly.

Giants 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
John D'Acquisto, who drove in what proved to be the winning run with a sacrifice fly, gained his second victory of the season when the Giants defeated the Padres, 3-2. The Giants picked up their initial run in the first inning on a triple by Bobby Bonds and infield out by Chris Speier before adding their other tallies in the second. Steve Ontiveros, Dave Kingman and Mike Phillips hit singles and when Fred Kendall let the throw from the outfield get away, Ontiveros scored. Kingman took third and crossed the plate on D'Acquisto's fly.
