Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Tigers 5 at Boston (day game):
Homers by Dwight Evans, John Kennedy and Carl Yastrzemski in the first three innings paced the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Tigers. Yastrzemski batted in two runs with a double in the first and Evans followed with his homer. Kennedy connected for the circuit in the second and Yastrzemski in the third. Juan Marichal, making his first A. L. start for the Red Sox, was kayoed in the fourth after the Tigers pulled within one run. Ed Brinkman accounted for three RBIs with a single and homer. Dick Drago was the winner in relief, but the Red Sox had to call on both Roger Moret and Diego Segui in the ninth. Segui saved the game by striking out Norm Cash with the bases loaded.

Angels 6, White Sox 3 at California (day game):
Four double plays helped the Angels defeat the White Sox, 6-3. Dick Allen hit into two twin-killings, one of them with the bases loaded in the seventh inning after Dick Selma came in to save the game for Frank Tanana. Frank Robinson hit a run-producing single and the 555th homer of his career for the Angels. Leroy Stanton rapped two singles, scored twice and hit a sacrifice fly.

[DH] Yankees 9, Indians 5 (day game) / Indians 9, Yankees 6 at Cleveland (day game):
With strong winds helping the flight of the ball, 12 homers flew out of Municipal Stadium in a doubleheader that saw the Yankees win the first game, 9-5, and the Indians take the second game, 9-6. The Yankees hit six homers in the opener, including two by Graig Nettles and one each by Thurman Munson, Ron Blomberg, Bobby Murcer and Mike Hegan. Charlie Spikes had one for the Indians. The Yankees capped their attack with three round-trippers in the ninth inning. Munson connected with a man on base and, after Blomberg went out, Nettles and Hegan homered in succession. Nettles hit two homers and Murcer one in the nightcap, while Dave Duncan rapped a pair for the Indians, who broke a 3-3 tie with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning.

Twins 8, Royals 0 at Minnesota (day game):
While Bert Blyleven and Bill Campbell combined on a shutout, Bobby Darwin had a field day at bat with a grand-slam homer, triple and two singles as the Twins defeated the Royals, 8-0. Darwin hit his homer off Doug Bird in the seventh inning after singles by Danny Thompson, Jerry Terrell and Rod Carew had loaded the bases. Blyleven suffered a slight muscle strain and left the game after 7 1/3 innings.

[DH] A's 4, Rangers 2 (day game) / Rangers 10, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
Reggie Jackson smashed two homers and accounted for all of the Athletics' runs in a 4-2 victory to open a doubleheader, but Dave Nelson took over the slugger's role and drove in six runs as the Rangers won the nightcap, 10-2. Jackson hit for the circuit in the second inning of the lidlifter, but a homer by Jeff Burroughs in the fourth and another run on a double by Tom Grieve and single by Mike Hargrove in sixth put the Rangers ahead. In the eighth, however, Bill North singled, Sal Bando was safe on an error and Jackson won it with his second homer. In the nightcap, Fergie Jenkins beat the A's for the second time this season. Nelson batted in his six runs with a homer, single and sacrifice fly.

Dodgers 7, Astros 2 at Houston (day game):
Jim Wynn whacked a triple and homer and Ron Cey collected three singles as the Dodgers used a 15-hit attack to defeat the Astros, 7-2. Steve Garvey also homered in support of Tommy John, who recorded his third straight victory.

[DH] Phillies 2, Mets 1 (day game) / Phillies 5, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Although collecting 15 hits, the Mets scored only on a homer by Rusty Staub and lost the first game of a doubleheader, 2-1, in 11 innings before succumbing again in the second game when the Phillies rallied for five runs in the last two innings to gain a 5-3 victory. The Phillies' first run in the lidlifter came on singles by Greg Luzinski, Willie Montanez and Bob Boone in the fourth. After Staub's homer in the eighth, the game proceeded until the 11th when Larry Bowa doubled, Mike Anderson beat out an infield hit and Bill Robinson laid down a safe squeeze bunt. In the nightcap, the Mets had a 3-0 lead with the aid of two unearned runs before the Phillies began their comeback with a pair in the eighth on singles by Tony Taylor and Dave Cash, double by Bowa and sacrifice fly by Del Unser. In the ninth, Boone, Cash and Bowa hit singles to tie the score and, with two out, Anderson doubled to drive in two runs for the Phils' winning margin.

[DH] Pirates 8, Cardinals 4 (day game) / Cardinals 6, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (day game):
After six straight defeats, the Pirates gained their first victory of the season, winning the opener of a doubleheader, 8-4, but the Cardinals came back to take the nightcap, 6-5. In the lidlifter, the Pirates put together five singles for three runs in the third inning and then added their remaining tallies in the fourth, two scoring on a double by Rennie Stennett and two on a homer by Willie Stargell. Bake McBride hit his first major league homer for the Cardinals. In the nightcap, Stennett homered in the second inning to tie the score at 3-3, but then the second baseman was guilty of a wild throw that enabled the Cardinals to go ahead again with two unearned runs in the third. The Redbirds tacked on what proved to be their winning run in the fourth on a single by Lou Brock, his theft of second and a single by Ted Sizemore.

Padres 6, Giants 5 at San Diego (day game):
A five-run rally in the eighth inning brought the Padres a 6-5 victory over the Giants. Gary Matthews drove in four runs with a single and homer to pace the Giants to a 5-1 lead before the Padres started their rally by loading the bases on a single by Matty Alou and two walks. Fred Kendall singled, driving in two runs, a single by Dave Winfield with one out scored another run and when Cito Gaston forced Winfield, the tying tally crossed the plate. Bobby Tolan then doubled to drive in the winning run.
