Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 1, Red Sox 0 at Boston (day game):
A homer by Norm Cash in the fifth inning decided a three-hit duel between Joe Coleman and Reggie Cleveland and gave the Tigers a 1-0 victory over the Red Sox in a Patriots Day morning game. The contest drew 23,498.

Angels 8, Twins 1 at California (night game):
Joe Lahoud batted in two runs with a homer and single in support of Bill Singer, who pitched the Angels to an 8-1 victory over the Twins. An unearned run on an error by Dave Chalk deprived Singer of a shutout, but the Twins were even more butter-fingered, committing five errors. After Lahoud's homer in the fourth inning, the Angels scored three times on five singles, a walk, wild pitch and infield out in the fifth, but then their last four runs were unearned.

Brewers 6, Orioles 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
After giving up four singles in the first two innings, Clyde Wright did not yield a hit the rest of the way and pitched the Brewers to a 6-1 victory over the Orioles. Singles by Don Baylor, Brooks Robinson and Jim Fuller accounted for the Orioles' run in the second, but the Brewers came back immediately with a five-run outburst at the expense of Mike Cuellar. A single by Bob Coluccio, pass to Darrell Porter and throwing error by Cuellar on a bunt by Robin Yount produced the first run. Don Money and Ken Berry followed with run-scoring singles. After a sacrifice and intentional pass to George Scott, Pedro Garcia delivered a two-run single to cap the outburst.

A's 4, White Sox 3 at Oakland (night game):
With two out in the 13th inning, Gene Tenace singled to score John Donaldson from second base and give the Athletics a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. Donaldson singled to open the stanza, but Reggie Jackson flied out before an infield tap by Joe Rudi moved Donaldson to second in position to score on Tenace's hit. The White Sox tagged Ken Holtzman for two runs in the first inning and added another on a homer by Dick Allen in the third before the A's came back to tie the score with a two-run rap by Ray Fosse in the fifth and a run on singles by Jesus Alou and Sal Bando and sacrifice fly by Jackson in the eighth.

Braves 6, Padres 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Phil Niekro struck out a personal career high of 13 batters and allowed only four hits in pitching the Braves to a 6-0 victory over the Padres. The Braves decided the game at the outset, scoring two runs in the first inning on a single by Ralph Garr, pass to Marty Perez, two infield outs and a single by Davey Johnson. Hank Aaron walked once and grounded out twice before leaving the game after his right shoulder stiffened.

Astros 3, Giants 1 at Houston (night game):
Larry Dierker, who had not pitched a complete game since 1972, after being out most of last season with a variety of arm ailments, pitched the Astros to a 3-1 victory over the Giants. Dierker gave up the Giants' run in the first inning on a single to Bobby Bonds, a hit batsman and single by Gary Matthews, but yielded only one hit the rest of the way. The Astros tied the score with a single by Roger Metzger, double by Ollie Brown and infield out in the third. Lee May broke the deadlock with a homer in the sixth and Brown clinched the decision with another round-tripper in the seventh.

Phillies 3, Cardinals 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
A mental error by Ted Sizemore enabled the Phillies to score the winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. With the score tied 1-1, Dave Cash walked in the eighth inning and stopped at second on a single by Larry Bowa. Unser then singled off Sizemore's glove, scoring Cash and sending Bowa to third. Sizemore retrieved the ball about 15 feet in the outfield and, in apparent disgust over his inability to prevent the hit, started walking toward second with his head down. Bowa, noting Sizemore's inattention, broke for home and scored. Reggie Smith hit his first two N. L. homers for the Cardinals.
