Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 3, Angels 2 at California (day game):
With a designated hitter in the Minnesota lineup, Steve Brye batted ninth, which proved the perfect position for the Twins' outfielder, who came up with two men on base in the sixth inning and homered to beat the Angels, 3-2.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 1 at New York (day game):
A homer by Mike Hegan with two men on base climaxed a scoring outburst by the Yankees, who piled up all their runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Red Sox, 6-1. A single by Bobby Murcer, double by Ron Blomberg and sacrifice fly by Graig Nettles produced the first tally. After doubles by Duke Sims and Gene Michael delivered two more runs, knocking out Rick Wise, Jim Mason walked and Hegan hit his homer off Diego Segui. Doc Medich had a shutout in his grasp until Bernie Carbo homered for the Red Sox with two out in the ninth inning.

Braves 7, Padres 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Ralph Garr and Frank Tepedino batted in five runs between them to lead the Braves to a 7-2 victory over the Padres. Garr had three hits and drove in two runs. Tepedino accounted for three RBIs with two hits. Hank Aaron singled for his first hit other than three homers in his first 24 times at bat this season.

Cubs 1, Pirates 0 at Chicago (day game):
In a decided contrast to their 18-9 victory in the previous day's game, the Cubs got seven-hit pitching from Ken Frailing and Ray Burris and shut out the Pirates, 1-0. Frailing allowed all seven hits before Burris took over to hurl the last two innings. The Cubs scored the game's lone run in the first and it was unearned. Rick Monday singled and took third on a single by Jerry Morales when Rennie Stennett dropped the relay throw from the outfield. Billy Williams then got the run home with a sacrifice fly.

Giants 5, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
The Astros, who twice walked Steve Ontiveros intentionally to get at Chris Speier, lived to regret their moves when the Giants' shortstop drove in three runs to account for a 5-2 victory. In the sixth inning, Garry Maddox was on third and Gary Matthews on second with two away when the Astros passed Ontiveros. Speier came through with a single to score two runs. In the eighth, when a similar situation developed, the Astros again passed Ontiveros and Speier delivered a single to drive in another tally.

Expos 8, Mets 5 at Montreal (day game):
Jim Cox, rookie second baseman with the Expos from Peninsula (International), batted in two runs with a single in the first inning and then hit his first major league homer for two more runs in the third to the lead way to an 8-5 victory over the Mets. The Expos counted a total of four runs in the first, other RBIs coming on a double by Hal Breeden and single by Ken Singleton. But the Expos were leading only 4-3 before Cox rapped his homer in the third.

Cardinals 6, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Lynn McGlothen, who did not bat with the Red Sox last season because of the A. L.'s use of designated hitters, drove in the Cardinals' first two runs with a double in the fifth inning to start himself off to a 6-2 victory over the Phillies, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. A walk to Ted Sizemore, double by Reggie Smith and sacrifice fly by Bake McBride added a run in the sixth. The Cards made it 4-2 with a run in the seventh on a double by Lou Brock and single by Sizemore. Ken Reitz iced the victory, driving in the last two tallies with a single in the eighth.
