Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Angels 3 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles, after building up a 4-0 lead, barely escaped with a 4-3 victory when an Angels' rally fell short in the ninth inning. The Orioles scored what proved to be the deciding run in the eighth on a walk to Boog Powell, wild pitch by Bill Singer and double by Don Baylor. The Angels began their rally in the ninth with a one-out run on singles by Dave Chalk and Winston Llenas and a double by Frank Robinson to chase Dave McNally. Bob Reynolds, relieving, was greeted with a two-run single by Bob Oliver before ending the game by inducing Richie Scheinblum to ground into a double play.

White Sox 7, Brewers 2 at Chicago (night game):
Terry Forster struck out eight batters in three innings and allowed only one hit, after relieving Wilbur Wood, to receive credit for a save as the White Sox defeated the Brewers, 7-2. Wood had a 5-2 lead, but was lifted in seventh after yielding a single for the seventh hit off his deliveries. The White Sox collected 13 hits, all singles.

A's 9, Indians 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Led by hot-hitting Sal Bando, who drove in five runs with a sacrifice fly, homer and double, the Athletics defeated the Indians, 9-2. Bando had 10 hits in his last 26 times at bat. Ken Holtzman, who had been a victim of poor batting support by the A's in losing two previous decisions, gained his first victory of the season.

Tigers 8, Twins 4 at Detroit (night game):
Triples by Jerry Moses and Aurelio Rodriguez, each driving in two runs, helped the Tigers defeat the Twins, 8-4. The Tigers started the scoring with two runs in the first on doubles by Gary Sutherland and Jim Northrup and a single by Willie Horton. Moses, who was catching because Bill Freehan had a pulled leg muscle, hit his triple in the sixth and crossed the plate himself on a single by Ed Brinkman. The Twins then rallied for four runs in the seventh. Jim Holt batted in a pair with a double and Harmon Killebrew followed with his first homer of the season. However, in the Tigers' half, Al Kaline knocked in a run with a double and after a pass to Norm Cash, Rodriguez capped the scoring with his triple.

Yankees 4, Royals 3 at New York (day game):
Graig Nettles tied the A. L. record for most homers in April, hitting his 10th of the month, as the Yankees defeated the Royals, 4-3. Frank Robinson had set the April mark while with the Orioles in 1969. Willie Stargell holds the N. L. record with 11 homers for the Pirates in April, 1971. Thurman Munson also homered for the Yankees, connecting with a man on base in the fourth inning, before Nettles rapped his drive in the sixth. The Royals tied the score at 3-3 in the seventh, but in the Yankees' half Jim Mason walked and raced home to score the deciding run on a long double by Roy White.

Rangers 3, Red Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
In a speedy pitchers' duel that lasted only one hour, 38 minutes, Fergie Jenkins triumphed over Reggie Cleveland as the Rangers defeated the Red Sox, 3-1. The Rangers picked up their initial run in the first inning on a single by Dave Nelson, an infield out, passed ball and single by Alex Johnson. The Red Sox got the tying tally in the seventh when Cecil Cooper doubled and Rico Petrocelli singled. With two out in the Rangers' half, Jim Spencer doubled. After an intentional pass to Joe Lovitto, Lenny Randle hit a high fly to shallow center field, where Carl Yastrzemski and Juan Beniquez let the ball drop between them for a double, scoring Spencer and Lovitto.

Pirates 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Homers by Richie Hebner, Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguillen accounted for all of the Pirates' runs in a 5-3 victory over the Braves. Hebner started the bombardment with a solo shot in the first inning. Stargell's homer came in the fifth and Sanguillen's in the eighth, each with a man on base. Dusty Baker hit a homer for one of the Braves' runs.

Reds 1, Cubs 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
With the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning, Bill Bonham walked George Foster, forcing in Cesar Geronimo to hand the Reds a 1-0 victory over the Cubs. Jack Billingham, who pitched a five-hitter, turned in the first complete game to the credit of the Reds' staff this season. In the ninth, Dave Concepcion opened with a double. After an intentional pass to Geronimo, Terry Crowley forced Concepcion on an attempted sacrifice. Pete Rose then went out on a short fly, but Joe Morgan beat out an infield hit to fill the bases and set the stage for Foster's walk.

Dodgers 6, Phillies 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Continuing his productive batting since being acquired by the Dodgers, Jim Wynn drove in two runs with a single and homer, giving him 19 RBIs in 17 games, to mark a 6-1 victory over the Phillies. Willie Crawford also batted in two runs for the Dodgers with a triple. Don Sutton, who brought his record to 4-1, lost his bid for a shutout when the Phillies counted in the seventh inning on singles by Tommy Hutton and Mike Schmidt around an infield out.

Padres 4, Mets 3 at San Diego (night game):
After scoring their first three runs on homers, the Padres counted on a grounder with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to gain a 4-3 victory over the Mets, who went down to the 10th defeat in their last 11 games. Nate Colbert homered with Dave Winfield on base in the first and Winfield, in his next time at bat in the third, hit for the circuit to put the Padres ahead, 3-1, but Wayne Garrett tied the score with a two-run shot for the Mets in the seventh. With one away in the Padres' ninth, a double by Derrel Thomas and two walks filled the sacks. Colbert then hit a grounder on which Felix Millan made a diving stop, but the second baseman had no chance for a play at home and instead threw to first for a putout to deprive Colbert of a hit as the Padres' winning run scored.

Astros 9, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Tommy Helms collected four hits and Dave Roberts helped himself with a two-run homer as the Astros defeated the Cardinals, 9-4. The Astros took a 4-0 lead in the second inning when Bob Watson, Milt May, Doug Rader and Helms singled and Roberts hit his homer. Two walks, a double by Helms and an error added three runs in the fourth. Helms singled for his fourth RBI of the night when the Astros tacked on their final pair in the fifth.
