Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 6, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
Paul Splittorff yielded only two hits in the first seven innings before a split finger forced his departure, but Doug Bird then retired the last six batters in succession to wrap up the Royals' 6-1 victory over the Yankees. The Yankees' second hit, a double by Lou Piniella in the seventh, led to their only run on an infield grounder and sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson. Vada Pinson batted in a pair for the Royals.

Rangers 4, Red Sox 0 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers, who already had one four-game winner in Fergie Jenkins, added another when Jim Bibby shut out the Red Sox, 4-0, with a four-hit performance. The Rangers struck for three of their runs in the fifth inning. Lenny Randle opened with a single and stole second, but two were away when Dave Nelson came through with a single to drive in the first run. Toby Harrah was hit by a pitch and two runs followed on singles by Alex Johnson and Jeff Burroughs. A sacrifice fly by Nelson added the final tally in the sixth.

Braves 3, Pirates 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron hit his 718th homer, connecting with a man on base in the seventh inning, to lift the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. Jerry Reuss, who was the loser in a duel with Ron Reed, was staked to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Braves picked up a run in the fifth when Dusty Baker doubled, took third after a long fly by Davey Johnson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ivan Murrell. Darrell Evans opened the seventh by drawing a walk. Aaron came up and smashed his winning homer on Reuss' first pitch.

Dodgers 1, Phillies 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The first major league pitcher to win five games this season, Tommy John pitched the Dodgers to a 1-0 victory over the Phillies. Dick Ruthven was the loser in the first inning when the Dodgers scored on a pass to Davey Lopes, single by Bill Buckner and sacrifice fly by Jim Wynn.

Mets 5, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
A weak-hitting pitcher, Jerry Koosman surprised with a single in the ninth inning for his first hit of the season to spark a three-run rally that enabled the Mets' lefthander to defeat the Padres, 5-2. After Koosman's single, Bud Harrelson bunted and when Bill Greif threw wildly to first base, Harrelson was safe and Koosman reached third on the error. Felix Millan then singled to score Koosman with the run that broke a 2-2 tie. Harrelson stopped at second. After a sacrifice by Cleon Jones and intentional pass to Rusty Staub, John Milner singled to provide the Mets with two extra runs.

Giants 8, Expos 2 at San Francisco (day game):
While Mike Caldwell pitched a five-hitter, the Giants uncorked an extra-base attack to defeat the Expos, 8-2. The Expos scored their pair in the third inning, but the Giants swung into action in the fourth with triples by Bobby Bonds and Garry Maddox and a homer by Dave Kingman. Kingman also doubled and scored in the sixth and followed with his second two-run homer of the game in the seventh.
