Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 2, Orioles 0 at California (night game):
Frank Tanana yielded only three hits in 8 2/3 innings, but the Angels had to call on two relievers to get the final out in a 2-0 victory over the Orioles. Bob Oliver and Tommy McCraw hit homers to account for the Angels' runs. In the ninth, Bobby Grich drew a walk from Tanana. With two out, Don Baylor singled. After Tanana threw two balls to Brooks Robinson, Dick Selma came in and completed the pass to load the bases. Rudy May then relieved and retired Enos Cabell on a grounder to the mound for the final out.

Yankees 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Reliever Joe Hoerner hit two batters with consecutive pitches, forcing in the run that resulted in the Royals losing to the Yankees, 5-4. Homers by Vada Pinson, Tony Solaita and Cookie Rojas gave the Royals a 4-3 lead before the Yankees loaded the bases in the seventh inning. Chris Chambliss grounded into a forceout at the plate, but Bobby Murcer hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score. Hoerner then hit Ron Blomberg on a 3-2 pitch to reload the bases and plinked Graig Nettles with his next delivery to force in the Yankees' deciding run.

White Sox 10, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The White Sox exploded for seven runs in the third inning and Wilbur Wood breezed from there to a 10-3 victory over the Brewers. The White Sox opened their big stanza with a run on singles by Buddy Bradford, Carlos May and Dick Allen. After a walk to Bill Melton loaded the bases, Ron Santo drove in two runs with a single. Ken Henderson singled to produce another tally before Brian Downing capped the outburst with a three-run homer. The Brewers scored on circuit clouts by Don Money, Johnny Briggs and Bobby Mitchell.

Tigers 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Willie Horton hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and the Tigers added another tally on singles by Aurelio Rodriguez, Ed Brinkman and Gary Sutherland in the seventh to defeat the Twins, 4-3. Horton's homer followed singles by Mickey Stanley and Jim Northrup. Steve Braun hit a homer for the Twins.

A's 3, Indians 1 at Oakland (night game):
Held to one hit in the first six innings, the Athletics rallied against Jim Perry in the seventh to defeat the Indians, 3-1. Bill North opened the frame with a single and, after an infield out by Sal Bando, Perry walked Reggie Jackson intentionally. Joe Rudi and Gene Tenace followed with singles, each driving in a run. Deron Johnson then walked and Ray Fosse delivered the A's third run with a single off reliever Milt Wilcox. Charlie Spikes, who had hit safely in 19 straight games for the Indians, was stopped on his streak.

Cubs 6, Reds 5 at Chicago (day game):
Apparently beaten when Pete Rose hit a three-run homer for the Reds in the top half of the ninth inning, the Cubs came back with a two-run smash by Rick Monday to gain a 6-5 victory. The Reds' first two runs in the game also came on a homer by George Foster in the second inning. The Cubs, picking up one run at a time, went ahead, 4-2, before Rose connected for his first homer of the season in the ninth. However, Don Gullett took over as the Reds' sixth pitcher in the Cubs' half and was an immediate loser when Vic Harris walked and Monday drilled his game-winning wallop.

Astros 4, Cardinals 1 at Houston (night game):
Claude Osteen, who had previously found the Cardinals a tough club to beat while with the Dodgers, made his first start against the Redbirds in an Astros' uniform and gained a 4-1 victory. While with the Dodgers, Osteen's record against the Cards was 8-18. Osteen gave up a run in the first inning on a single by Lou Brock, his 15th stolen base of the season and a single by Ted Sizemore. Lee May tied the score with a homer in the fourth. Osteen and Alan Foster then dueled into the eighth when Bob Watson singled and took third on a single by Lee May, who advanced to second on the throw. After an intentional pass to Milt May loaded the bases, Doug Rader singled to drive in two runs. Tommy Helms followed with a single on the first pitch by reliever Mike Garman to add another tally to the Astros' total.

Phillies 2, Dodgers 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Willie Montanez set up one run with a single and homered to account for another as the Phillies defeated the Dodgers, 2-1. In the second inning, Mike Anderson singled, took third on Montanez' single and scored on a wild pitch by Doug Rau. Montanez homered in the fourth. The Dodgers picked up their run in the eighth. Bill Russell doubled and stopped at third on a single by Ken McMullen. A torn fingernail on his pitching hand forced Ron Schueler to leave the mound and, after Mac Scarce relieved, Manny Mota drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Pirates 4, Braves 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Gaining his first victory in a Pirates' uniform, Jerry Reuss scattered eight hits and beat the Braves, 4-2. The Pirates scored all their runs in the third inning. Reuss drew a walk from Roric Harrison and scored on a double by Richie Hebner and infield out by Al Oliver. Willie Stargell doubled to drive in Hebner. Dave Parker tripled, sending Stargell home, and then scored himself on a wild pitch. Rowland Office batted in both Braves' runs with a double in the sixth.
