Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Solo homers by Buddy Bell and Oscar Gamble in the fourth put the Indians ahead to stay and helped Cleveland end the Angels' six-game winning streak, 5-3. Fritz Peterson, although touched for eight hits in six innings, beat the Angels for the second time since being traded by the Yankees, running his career mark against California to 16-6. Singles by Charlie Spikes and George Hendrick and Dave Duncan's sacrifice fly accounted for the third Indian run in the fourth. The Tribe added two more in the fifth off loser Bill Stoneman. The Angels got all their runs in the fifth, two on Frank Robinson's homer.

Tigers 5, White Sox 4 at Detroit (night game):
Jerry Moses' two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh capped a Tiger rally which ended the White Sox' five-game winning streak, 5-4. Down 4-3 after the Sox had scored twice on Ed Herrmann's homer, Bucky Dent's double and a throwing error by Ed Brinkman in the seventh, Detroit got singles by Jim Northrup and Gates Brown to kayo loser Cy Acosta. Reliever Terry Forster got pinch-hitter Dick Sharon to hit into a forceout, but Northrup scored the tying run. Sharon stole second and came home with the deciding run on Moses' hit. The Sox got a two-run homer from Pat Kelly in the third, but Northrup homered with two on in the bottom of that same frame for a Tiger lead which stood up until the seventh. John Hiller, who relieved Joe Coleman in the seventh, benefited to up his record to 4-0.

Orioles 6, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Mike Cuellar, with bat help from Brooks Robinson and Paul Blair, claimed his first victory of the season for the Orioles with a route-going, seven-hit performance, beating the A's, 6-3. Robinson collected two doubles and a pair of singles and drove in two runs, while Blair accounted for the final Oriole runs in the sixth with a two-run homer. Cuellar, who entered the game with three losses and no complete games in four starts, gave up back-to-back homers in the first to Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson, then set down 14 Oakland batters in succession before the A's reached him for a final unearned run in the sixth. The victory snapped a five-game Baltimore losing streak.

Yankees 6, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Bobby Murcer singled home Chris Chambliss with the go-ahead run in the seventh and the Yankees spoiled things for the largest crowd at Arlington Stadium this season, beating the Rangers and Jackie Brown, 6-4. Ron Blomberg's groundout chased home Thurman Munson, who had walked and moved to third on Murcer's hit, with an insurance run. The Yankees grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second against starter David Clyde with four singles and a double by Roy White. The Rangers got one back in the second and tied the score on Jim Fregosi's three-run homer in the fourth. Winner Dick Tidrow was lifted in the ninth, and New York reliever Sparky Lyle struck out the side to end the game.

Padres 7, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
Nate Colbert and Fred Kendall each drove in three runs to lead the Padres past the Phillies, 7-6, and give rookie hurler Dave Freisleben his third straight victory. Kendall cracked a two-run homer in the second off loser Steve Carlton, and the Padres made it 3-0 in third on Enzo Hernandez' double and Colbert's single. Larry Bowa's triple, following a single by Dave Cash, plus an infield out pulled the Phillies to within one in the fourth, but Colbert doubled home two more runs in the fifth. Bill Robinson and Bob Boone had RBI hits in the seventh for Philadelphia to cut the Padre lead to one again. San Diego added their final two runs in the eighth on a single by Dave Winfield, Fred Kendall's double, an error, intentional walk and groundout. The Phillies fell one short in the ninth against reliever Vicente Romo, counting two runs on singles by Mike Schmidt and Robinson, a hit batsman and error by Derrel Thomas.
