Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
A single by John Lowenstein for his third hit of the game, followed by an error, enabled the Indians to score two runs in the ninth inning to gain a 5-3 victory over the Angels. Oscar Gamble opened the frame with an infield hit and, after two out, Frank Duffy singled, Gamble stopping at second. Lowenstein then lined a single off second baseman Denny Doyle's glove, scoring Gamble. Shortstop Dave Chalk, who retrieved the ball, threw wildly to third trying to catch Duffy, who continued home and scored on the error.

White Sox 1, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Wilbur Wood yielded only two hits in a duel with Lerrin LaGrow and was the winner when Ed Herrmann homered in the 11th inning to give the White Sox a 1-0 victory over the Tigers.

Twins 3, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Two run-scoring singles by Harmon Killebrew, plus Tony Oliva's first homer of the season, produced support for Joe Decker, who pitched the Twins to a 3-0 victory over the Brewers. Killebrew's first hit drove in Larry Hisle, who singled in the third inning and advanced on an error. Singles by Rod Carew, Oliva and Killebrew added a run in the fifth before Oliva cracked his homer for the final tally in the seventh.

Orioles 9, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
The Orioles tied an A. L. record when all nine of their batters had two or more hits apiece in a 9-3 victory over the Athletics. Paul Blair led way with four hits and Enos Cabell collected three. Seven others had two each in the Orioles' 21-hit attack, which included a homer by Bobby Grich and double by Brooks Robinson as the only extra-base blows. Deron Johnson had a homer for the A's.

Yankees 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Dave Nelson, who drove in two runs with a single to tie the score in the ninth inning, turned around and committed an error in the 12th with the result that the Rangers lost to the Yankees, 4-3. Thurman Munson was safe on Nelson's bobble of his grounder and scored when Elliott Maddox doubled.

Cubs 3, Braves 2 at Chicago (day game):
Steve Stone, who went from the Giants to the White Sox before returning to the N. L., gained his first victory of the season when the Cubs defeated the Braves, 3-2. However, with a 3-0 lead, Stone faltered in the ninth inning and the Cubs had to call on two relievers to put down the Braves' rally. Stone departed after giving up a double to Darrell Evans and walking Davey Johnson. With Horacio Pina on the mound, the Braves scored on a throwing error by Billy Williams and sacrifice fly by Johnny Oates. Pina then walked pinch-hitter Hank Aaron and struck out Marty Perez before Jim Kremmel came in and retired Ralph Garr on a grounder to end the game.

Cardinals 1, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Fred Norman beat himself in a duel with Lynn McGlothen when an error by the Reds' lefthander enabled the Cardinals to score in the ninth inning to gain a 1-0 victory. McGlothen yielded only four hits. Norman, who struck out 13, gave up a single by Reggie Smith in the ninth for the sixth hit off his deliveries. Trying to pick Smith off first, Norman threw wildly, allowing the runner to advance to second. Smith moved to third on an infield out by Ted Simmons and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Torre.

Astros 2, Pirates 1 at Houston (day game):
A single by Willie Stargell in the second inning was the only hit given up by Tom Griffin when the Astros' righthander defeated the Pirates, 2-1. Two errors by Doug Rader, who fumbled grounders by Richie Zisk and Manny Sanguillen, and a wild pickoff throw by Griffin to third base, enabled the Pirates to score their run in the fifth inning, but Rader made up for his miscues with a run-scoring single in the sixth and the Astros followed with the winning run in the eighth on a single by Bob Watson and triple by Milt May.

[DH] Giants 4, Mets 3 (night game) / Giants 3, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Gary Matthews, who hit a three-run homer off Tom Seaver in the eighth inning to win the first game, 4-3, broke up a scoreless duel in the second game with a double in the ninth to lead the Giants to a 3-0 victory in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Mets. Seaver yielded a homer by Steve Ontiveros in the fourth inning of the opener, but the Mets were ahead, 3-1, going into the eighth when Mike Phillips singled, Ontiveros walked and Matthews cracked his winning wallop. In the nightcap, Ontiveros singled in the ninth, moved to second on a balk by George Stone and scored the game's first run on Matthews' double. After two out, an intentional pass to John Boccabella and infield hit by Jim Barr loaded the bases. Bobby Bonds then doubled, driving in two runs, to seal the Giants' sweep.

Padres 5, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Dave Winfield and Fred Kendall off reliever Dave Wallace, who had just entered the game in the 13th inning, powered the Padres to a 5-3 victory over the Phillies. The Padres counted their first three runs in the second on a walk to Kendall, homer by Derrel Thomas, pass to Dave Roberts, infield hit by Steve Arlin and double by Enzo Hernandez. The Phillies knotted the count in the seventh. Dave Cash was hit by a pitch, Larry Bowa singled and Del Unser doubled them home. Greg Luzinski beat out an infield single and Willie Montanez hit a sacrifice fly to score Unser.
