Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 2, Yankees 0 at Boston (night game):
A homer by Bernie Carbo in the seventh inning broke up a scoreless duel between Luis Tiant and Pat Dobson and sent the Red Sox on their way to a 2-0 victory over the Yankees. The Red Sox picked up another run after Carbo's clout on a single by Juan Beniquez and double by Dick McAuliffe. Tiant, who yielded only three hits, posted the Red Sox' second straight shutout of the Yankees, following Bill Lee's 4-0 victory in the previous night's game.
Royals 6, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
The Royals got four-hit pitching from Marty Pattin and breezed to a 6-1 victory over the Rangers. Dave Nelson, leading off for the Rangers in the first inning, bunted safely, but Cesar Tovar hit into a double play. Pattin then retired the next 17 straight batters before Toby Harrah singled in the seventh. The Rangers scored their run in the eighth on singles by Mike Hargrove and Duke Sims, a fielder's choice and an infield out by Joe Lovitto. Mix-ups in the Rangers' outfield allowed the Royals to score three of their runs. Lovitto and Jeff Burroughs let a fly by Fran Healy drop between them, driving in a run in the fourth inning, and two more scored in the seventh when Lovitto crashed into Burroughs as the right fielder attempted to catch a fly by Hal McRae.
Cubs 3, Braves 1 at Chicago (day game):
Although Rick Reuschel pitched a four-hitter, the Cubs needed two unearned runs to gain a 3-1 victory over the Braves. Reuschel gave up a run in the fourth inning when Hank Aaron, after forcing Dusty Baker, stole second and scored on a single by Darrell Evans. The Cubs, held to four hits by Roric Harrison through six innings, got going with singles by Rick Monday and Jose Cardenal in the seventh. After a pass to Carmen Fanzone loaded bases, Chris Ward grounded into a forceout at second, but Craig Robinson threw wildly to first trying for a double play, as Monday and Cardenal scored. Cardenal's run was unearned. Another error, two walks and a safe bunt by Cardenal added a tainted tally to the Cubs' total in the eighth.
Pirates 4, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Jim Rooker collected a single and double among the Pirates' 15 hits while pitching seven innings in a 4-1 victory over the Astros. Dave Giusti worked the last two frames. The Pirates began the scoring in the second on singles by Richie Hebner, Frank Taveras and Rooker, with the run being unearned because catcher Cliff Johnson bobbled the throw to the plate. A single by Willie Stargell, pass to Richie Zisk and singles by Manny Sanguillen and Hebner added two runs in the third. Rooker doubled and counted on a single by Rennie Stennett in the eighth before surrendering the mound to Giusti. Lee May homered for the Astros' run off Rooker in the fourth inning.
Dodgers 6, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Don Sutton, allowing only a single by Johnny Grubb in the second inning, posted the third one-hitter of his career in pitching the Dodgers to a 6-0 victory over the Padres. Jim Wynn had three hits and Bill Buckner two in the Dodgers' support of Sutton. Wynn singled in the first inning and scored on an error and a sacrifice fly by Ron Cey. Singles by Buckner and Wynn, together with an infield out by Steve Garvey, added a tally in the sixth. Buckner singled and Wynn tripled for another run in the eighth before the Dodgers wound up with their final trio in the ninth, two scoring on a pinch-double by Manny Mota.
