Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 8, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
With four of their batters driving in two runs apiece, the Brewers defeated the Orioles, 8-3. Pedro Garcia singled across two tallies in the second inning, Johnny Briggs homered with a man on base in the third and Bobby Mitchell accounted for two runs with a single in the fifth. George Scott also had a run-scoring single in the fifth and added an RBI with another single in the seventh. Bill Champion, pitching for the Brewers, was kayoed in the eighth when the Orioles scored all their runs, but Eduardo Rodriguez relieved and retired the last six straight batters.

Indians 6, Red Sox 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Gaylord Perry brought his career record against the Red Sox to 11-1 by pitching the Indians to a 6-2 victory. The veteran righthander allowed only five hits with Red Sox runs coming on homers by Carlton Fisk and Dick McAuliffe. The Indians, after building up a 3-0 lead against Reggie Cleveland, clinched their victory with two homers. George Hendrick connected for the circuit following a single by Charlie Spikes in the fifth inning and Frank Duffy smashed a drive over the wall in the sixth.

Tigers 5, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Manager Ralph Houk made his first appearance in New York in a visiting uniform and Mickey Lolich made it successful by allowing only three hits and pitching the Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. The last two men in the Tigers' batting order, Aurelio Rodriguez and Ed Brinkman, had seven hits between them. The Tigers got to Pat Dobson for three runs in the fifth inning. Singles by Rodriguez, Brinkman and Mickey Stanley accounted for the first tally. After a bunt by Gary Sutherland, other runs scored on a sacrifice fly by Stanley and single by Al Kaline. The Tigers then picked up two insurance runs in the eighth on a hit batsman and singles by Rodriguez, Brinkman and Sutherland.

[DH] Royals 4, A's 2 (night game) / A's 2, Royals 1 at Oakland (night game):
Cookie Rojas smashed a two-run homer in the sixth inning to provide the Royals with a 4-2 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Athletics got two run-scoring doubles from Gaylen Pitts, their rookie third baseman, and won the second game in 10 innings, 2-1. In the opener, the A's scored on a double by Bill North and single by Joe Rudi in the first inning and added another tally on a double by Gene Tenace, a throwing error by Rojas and sacrifice fly by Angel Mangual in the second. The Royals tied the score with consecutive singles by Jim Wohlford, Fran Healy and George Brett, together with an error by North, in the fifth before breaking ahead in the sixth when John Mayberry singled and Rojas hit his homer. In the nightcap, Pitts drove in Mangual with his first double of the game in the fifth inning. The Royals pulled even with two-baggers by Wohlford and Mayberry in the sixth. Pitts' second double scored Ted Kubiak to decide the game in the overtime stanza.

Giants 4, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Giants' acquisition of Mike Caldwell from the Padres continued to pay dividends when the lefthander hurled a five-hitter and shut out the Reds, 4-0, for his sixth victory against one defeat. A triple by Gary Thomasson and infield out by Tito Fuentes started the Giants' scoring in the first inning. Garry Maddox knocked in a run with a double in the third and then homered in the sixth before the Giants added their last run on a triple by Dave Rader and grounder by Fuentes in the seventh.

Dodgers 1, Astros 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Don Sutton decided his own pitching duel with Larry Dierker by batting in a run with a bloop single in the second inning to give the Dodgers a 1-0 victory over the Astros. The shutout was his second straight and third of the year for Sutton, who allowed four hits. Dierker yielded only two hits in six innings on the mound. However in the second, the Dodgers loaded the bases when Willie Crawford and Ron Cey walked and Steve Yeager was hit by a pitch. Bill Russell forced Crawford at the plate, but Sutton looped his single for the game's only run.

Expos 9, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
While Steve Rogers was pitching a six-hitter, the Expos piled up 15 hits and defeated the Phillies, 9-2. Rogers got a working margin in the first inning when the Expos scored three runs on five singles. Ron Fairly homered in the third and the Expos then made it 9-0 with five runs in the fourth. Larry Lintz opened the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Willie Davis. After a walk to Ken Singleton, George Culver booted a bunt by Fairly, allowing Davis to cross the plate. A single by Bob Bailey, double by Jim Cox and single by Barry Foote added three other runs. The Phillies bunched four singles for their tallies off Rogers in the sixth inning.

Cubs 7, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Getting four-hit pitching from Rick Reuschel, the Cubs defeated the Pirates, 7-1. Jose Cardenal had three hits for the Cubs, scored two runs and drove in one. Reuschel also scored a run, hitting a double in the fifth inning and coming around on an infield out and a sacrifice fly by Rick Monday. The Pirates counted their lone runs when Willie Stargell tripled in the seventh and Richie Hebner hit a sacrifice fly.

Braves 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Braves scored three runs in the fourth inning and made them stand up for a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Hank Aaron and Darrell Evans sparked the stanza with singles and Davey Johnson walked to load the bases. Frank Tepedino singled, scoring Aaron and Evans. Johnson reached third and counted what proved to be the deciding run on a sacrifice fly by Craig Robinson. Dave Winfield homered for the Padres in the sixth. However, in the seventh, when the Padres succeeded in forcing the exit of Phil Niekro and loaded the bases with none out, Cito Gaston struck out and Winfield hit into a double play. Tom House, who saved the game for Niekro, allowed the Padres' second run with two out in the ninth on a double by Bobby Tolan and single by Derrel Thomas.
