Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Red Sox 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Tommy Davis smashed a pair of two-run homers and Mike Cuellar scattered six singles as the Orioles defeated the Red Sox, 6-0, in a game called after six innings because of rain. Mark Belanger tripled, Bobby Grich singled and Davis hit his first homer of the game in the third. Paul Blair was on base when Davis connected again in the fifth. Consecutive singles by Don Baylor, Brooks Robinson, Jim Fuller and Andy Etchebarren added the Orioles' final tally in the sixth.
A's 10, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
A bases-loaded triple by Ray Fosse in the first inning started the Athletics off to a 10-4 victory over the White Sox. Fosse hit his triple after a double by Bert Campaneris, a walk and a hit batsman. Buddy Bradford crashed into the outfield wall chasing Fosse's drive and suffered a fractured collarbone. Angel Mangual followed with a single to score Fosse. The A's went back into action in the second with six runs on four singles, a walk, error, sacrifice fly by Fosse for his fourth RBI of the game and a wild pitch. Dick Allen hit two homers for the White Sox and drove in three runs.
Tigers 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Four double plays helped the Tigers gain a 4-3 victory over the Indians, who were unable to take full advantage of their 11 hits. The Tigers, who collected eight hits, scored on a sacrifice fly by Ed Brinkman in the fifth before adding their other runs in the sixth. Gary Sutherland, Ron Cash and Al Kaline hit singles for the first tally and, after an intentional pass to Willie Horton, Cash scored while the Indians were executing a double play on a grounder by Bill Freehan. Kaline then counted on a passed ball, but the run became earned when Jim Northrup followed with a single. The Indians saved their scoring for the last two innings, chasing Lerrin LaGrow with two runs in the eighth and picking up their final tally off John Hiller in the ninth on a single by George Hendrick and double by Dave Duncan before Frank Duffy popped up and John Lowenstein flied out.
Royals 6, Rangers 4 at Kansas City (night game):
After trailing, 3-0, the Royals erupted for four runs in the second inning and went on to defeat the Rangers, 6-4. John Mayberry started the Royals' rally with a double and Hal McRae was hit on the helmet by a pitch from Jim Bibby, forcing him to leave the game. Jim Wohlford doubled, driving in Mayberry. Following a pass to Fran Healy, George Brett hit a sacrifice fly to score Richie Scheinblum, who replaced McRae. Fred Patek then tripled to send in Wohlford and Healy. Brett produced the Royals' winning margin with two doubles, the first one in the fourth driving in Healy, who had walked, and his second two-bagger in the sixth again scoring Healy, who had singled.
Yankees 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Yankees ended a five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. The Yankees began their scoring with two runs in the first inning on singles by Chris Chambliss and Bobby Murcer, an infield out by Lou Piniella and single by Bill Sudakis. The Brewers came back with a run in their half on two walks and a single by Darrel Porter, but the Yankees added what proved to be their winning run in the seventh. Graig Nettles singled and was forced by Rick Dempsey, who took third on a single by Fernando Gonzalez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jim Mason. George Scott homered for the Brewers in the eighth.
Twins 2, Angels 1 at Minnesota (night game):
After failing in a bunt attempt, Larry Hisle swung away and smashed a two-run homer in the eighth inning to bring the Twins a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Joe Lis singled before Hisle came to the plate. Following his failure to bunt, Hisle received the green light on the next pitch by Frank Tanana. The Angels' run came in the fifth on a pass to Ellie Rodriguez, sacrifice by Dave Chalk and single by Mickey Rivers.
Reds 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Three unearned runs on as many errors made it possible for the Reds to defeat the Astros, 4-2. The Reds counted their only earned run in the first inning when Pete Rose singled, moved up on a pass to Joe Morgan and crossed the plate on a single by Johnny Bench. With two out, Roger Metzger muffed a grounder by Dave Concepcion, allowing Morgan to score. Two errors on the same play resulted in the Reds' other two runs in the fourth. Fred Norman and Rose singled to lead off the stanza. Morgan grounded to Lee May, who threw wildly to Claude Osteen covering first. Norman raced home and when Osteen, retrieving the ball, threw past catcher Milt May at the plate, Rose also came in to score. Doug Rader hit a homer for the Astros, who chased Norman with one out in the ninth when Rader doubled and Ollie Brown singled. Clay Carroll relieved and gave up a run-scoring single by Cliff Johnson before ending the game by inducing Mike Easler to ground into a double play.
Braves 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A crowd of 53,927, largest in the major leagues so far this season, turned out for "Salute to Hank Aaron Night" and although the slugger went hitless in three official trips, the Braves were able to defeat the Dodgers, 5-3, in 11 innings. The Dodgers, who were stopped on an eight-game winning streak, helped beat themselves. In the fifth, when the Braves took a 3-2 lead, two of their three runs were unearned on errors by Bill Buckner and Bill Russell. The Dodgers tied the score in the seventh when Buckner singled and Jim Wynn tripled. With Jim Brewer on the mound for the Dodgers in the 11th, Johnny Oates and Craig Robinson singled. Mike Lum, battiing for Lew Krausse, lifted a pop foul that Ron Cey dropped for an error. Given new life at the plate, Lum singled, driving in two runs. Krausse was the winner in relief to mark his first appearance with the Braves after being called up from Tucson (Pacific Coast).
Mets 5, Expos 0 at New York (night game):
Tom Seaver, whose only previous win of the season came over the Giants, 6-0, April 26, racked up his second shutout, pitching the Mets to a 5-0 victory over the Expos. Seaver yielded five hits and struck out 13. The Mets salted away the decision with three runs in the third inning. Felix Millan walked and Rusty Staub smashed a homer. Cleon Jones followed with a double and completed his journey around the bases on a bunt by George Theodore and sacrifice fly by Jerry Grote. Ted Martinez added the final two tallies with a bases-loaded single in the eighth.
Padres 7, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Nate Colbert hit a grand-slam homer in the first inning to enable the Padres to end a nine-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the Giants. Ron Bryant, who started for the Giants, faced six batters without retiring any. Derrel Thomas, leading off, was safe on an error, Enzo Hernandez singled and Dave Winfield walked to load the bases for Colbert's clout. Bryant then walked Cito Gaston and gave up a single by Johnny Grubb before leaving the game. The Padres added a run on a sacrifice fly by Bob Barton after Charlie Williams relieved. After that initial outburst, the Padres subsided in their scoring until picking up their final two tallies off Tom Bradley, the Giants' sixth pitcher, in the ninth. Bobby Bonds had four hits for the Giants and batted in two runs.
Cardinals 9, Cubs 8 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals, after exploding for five runs in the first inning, failed to hold the lead, but Ted Simmons came through with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for his fourth RBI of the game to defeat the Cubs, 9-8. Simmons hit a homer with two men on base in the Cardinals' opening blast. Billy Williams batted in four runs for the Cubs, two of them with a homer in the sixth. Don Kessinger had four hits, driving in two runs and scoring two. After the Cubs tied the score at 8-8 in the eighth, Ted Sizemore singled in the Cards' half and gave way to Luis Melendez, who took second on a balk, moved to third on an infield out and scored the winning run on Simmons' sacrifice fly.
