Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, Indians 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Paul Blair in the second inning helped carry the Orioles to a 7-1 victory over the Indians. Earl Williams walked, Boog Powell singled, Bobby Grich was hit by a pitch and Brooks Robinson coaxed a pass to force in Williams before Blair whacked his homer off Steve Kline.

Red Sox 14, Yankees 6 at Boston (night game):
Rico Petrocelli and Cecil Cooper batted in seven runs between them to lead the Red Sox to a 14-6 victory over the Yankees. Petrocelli rapped a homer and double, while Cooper collected four singles. Petrocelli's homer in the second inning ignited a four-run outburst by the Red Sox, with other runs following on singles by Dwight Evans and Dick McAuliffe, a sacrifice and singles by Juan Beniquez and Cooper. Yankee pitching went wild in the third when the Red Sox added six runs on six walks, an error and singles by Mario Guerrero, Beniquez and Cooper. The Yankees came back with a pair of three-run innings, but the Red Sox iced the verdict by scoring their final four runs in the eighth with the help of a double by Petrocelli and triple by Evans.

Royals 4, Angels 2 at Kansas City (night game):
John Mayberry hit a double and homer, driving in three runs, and Fred Patek also smacked a homer to account for the Royals' scoring in a 4-2 victory over the Angels. Mayberry's two-bagger in the first inning drove in Amos Otis, who had singled. The Angels loaded the bases with three singles in the fifth, but scored only on a sacrifice fly by Ellie Rodriguez. Patek's homer in the fifth put the Royals ahead again before Cookie Rojas doubled in the sixth and Mayberry followed with his round-tripper for the winning margin. Frank Robinson hit a homer for the Angels in the eighth.

Brewers 6, Tigers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
After a double steal produced the tying run, Johnny Briggs drove in the winning run with a triple in the seventh inning to give the Brewers a 6-5 victory over the Tigers. The Brewers started the scoring with two runs in the first on a double by Dave May and homer by George Scott. Darrell Porter homered in the second and the Brewers scored again in the third on a pass to Don Money, a stolen base, and a single by May. Willie Horton hit two solo homers for the Tigers and Bill Freehan whacked another in the seventh when the Tigers took the lead with three runs. In the Brewers' half, Tim Johnson singled and raced to third when John Hiller, after fielding a grounder by Money, threw wildly to second in an attempted forceout. Johnson and Money then worked a double steal, Johnson scoring. Briggs followed with his triple to hand Hiller his second straight defeat at the hands of the Brewers.

A's 8, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Breaking a tight game apart, the Athletics scored six runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Twins, 8-1. Bobby Darwin homered for the Twins in the second to produce a 1-1 tie. The A's were held off by Joe Decker until Gene Tenace homered to start their scoring spree in the seventh. Later in that same stanza, Reggie Jackson connected for the circuit with a man on base. Back-to-back triples by Bill North and Bert Campaneris added the A's final run in the eighth.

Astros 5, Padres 4 at Houston (night game):
The Astros ended a 10-game losing streak by defeating the Padres, 5-4, with the aid of Milt May's first homer in a Houston uniform. Nate Colbert homered with a man on base for the Padres in the first inning, but the Astros came back with four runs, two scoring on May's drive. Tom Griffin then doubled in the fifth and counted what proved to be the winning run on a single by Roger Metzger. The Padres put together doubles by Bobby Tolan, Dave Winfield and Colbert for two runs in the eighth before Fred Scherman relieved Griffin and quelled the rally.

Dodgers 3, Reds 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers were held to four hits, but two were all they needed to defeat the Reds, 3-2. The Reds scored their run in the first inning on singles by Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Dave Concepcion, but the Dodgers came back with two on only one hit in the second. Steve Garvey singled and Willie Crawford and Ron Cey walked to load the bases. Garvey scored when Tony Perez fumbled a grounder by Bill Russell and Crawford tallied when Steve Yeager grounded into a double play. The Reds tied the score with a homer by Morgan in the sixth. The Dodgers ended the game with a run on one hit, another single by Garvey, in the ninth. After a sacrifice by Cey and intentional pass to Russell, Yeager was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Joe Ferguson then batted for Davey Lopes and hit a towering drive to center field for a sacrifice fly.

Pirates 8, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Rennie Stennett and Frank Taveras drove in two runs apiece to lead the Pirates' attack in an 8-4 victory over the Expos. The Pirates scored without benefit of a hit in the first inning on a walk to Gene Clines, an error on a pickoff throw by Balor Moore and a wild pitch. Ken Brett returned the favor with a wild pitch that gave the Expos a run in their half. Dave Parker walked and Stennett doubled for the Pirates' tally in the second. Taveras accounted for his two RBIs with sacrifice flies in the fourth and sixth. Stennett drove in his second run with a single in the eighth, scoring Brett, who had doubled. Bob Bailey homered for the Expos with a man on base in the ninth.

Mets 10, Cubs 5 at New York (night game):
Although tagged for 12 hits, George Stone lasted the route and also helped himself at bat with a pair of two-run singles as the Mets defeated Cubs, 10-5. Stone barely survived the first inning, giving up three runs on a triple by Jerry Morales with the bases loaded. Stone got two runs back with a single in the second, then the Mets erupted for six runs in the third. George Theodore singled, Cleon Jones walked and John Milner singled to drive in the tying run. Ray Burris replaced Ken Frailing and failed in relief. Jerry Grote singled and Dave Schneck doubled, each driving in a run. Ted Martinez tripled to add two more before scoring himself on a wild pitch. Rick Monday batted in a run for the Cubs with a double in the seventh. Stone hit his second two-run single in the Mets' half before Carmen Fanzone accounted for the Cubs' last run with a homer in the eighth.

[DH] Braves 4, Giants 1 (night game) / Giants 5, Braves 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Ron Bryant gained his first victory of the season when the Giants won the nightcap of a doubleheader, 5-4, after losing the opener to the Braves, 4-1. The Giants began the lidlifter with a run on a walk to Bobby Bonds, a sacrifice, an infield out and single by Ed Goodson. John D'Acquisto protected the lead until the eighth when the Braves erupted for all their runs. Norm Miller, batting for Carl Morton, tied the score with a homer. After Ralph Garr tripled, Elias Sosa replaced D'Acquisto and retired Marty Perez, but when Dusty Baker grounded to Steve Ontiveros, the third baseman threw wildly to the plate, allowing Garr to score. Another error, this time by Bonds, and a single by Frank Tepedino accounted for the final two runs. In the second game, the Giants picked up an unearned run in the first inning before the Braves scored all their runs off Bryant in the third. The Giants came back with two in their half on a walk to Ontiveros and inside-the-park homer by Garry Maddox. The tying and winning tallies followed in the fifth on doubles by Maddox and Goodson, a single by Gary Matthews and sacrifice fly by Chris Speier.

Phillies 4, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Bill Robinson homered with two men on base for the Phillies' only hit in the first inning when they scored four runs to defeat the Cardinals, 4-2. Dave Cash walked, Larry Bowa was safe on an error by Mike Tyson, and Mike Schmidt drew a pass to load the bases. Greg Luzinski hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Cash, before Robinson rapped his homer. Lou Brock stole his 28th straight base to set up a run for the Cardinals in the third, but the speedster's string ended when he was gunned down by catcher Bob Boone in the fifth. The Cards loaded the bases on three walks in the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Smith before Mac Scarce came in and saved the game for the Phillies by retiring Bake McBride on a fly.
