Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Dick Allen and Bill Melton in the third inning, Allen's blow coming after a single by Bucky Dent, carried the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. Two homers by Carlton Fisk accounted for the Red Sox runs.

Angels 5, Tigers 3 at California (night game):
Ellie Rodriguez hit two homers and a double, driving in four runs, as the Angels snapped their four-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Tigers. A single by Frank Robinson, pass to Paul Schaal and double by Rodriguez produced two runs in the second inning. The Tigers came back with matching tallies in the fifth, but Rodriguez broke the tie with his first homer of the game in the Angels' half. Another run followed in the same stanza. Sandy Alomar singled and took third when Mickey Rivers bunted and was safe on an error by Norm Cash. Alomar then scored when Dave Chalk grounded into a double play. Rodriguez iced the victory in the seventh by hitting his second homer of the game.

Royals 4, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
The relief pitching of Steve Mingori, who put down a bases-loaded threat with none out in the fifth inning, enabled the Royals to defeat the Indians, 4-2. Amos Otis batted in two runs for the Royals with a single in the top half of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie before the Indians came back with singles by George Hendrick, Dave Duncan and Frank Duffy to fill the sacks and chase Al Fitzmorris. Mingori gave up a sacrifice fly by John Lowenstein for one run, but then struck out Jack Brohamer and retired Leron Lee on a grounder. John Mayberry padded the Royals' lead with a homer in the sixth. Mingori pitched four hitless innings before Doug Bird took over in the ninth inning to finish up the contest.

Twins 5, Yankees 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Getting a three-run start in the first inning, the Twins went on to defeat the Yankees, 5-2. Singles by Steve Braun, Tony Oliva and Jim Holt produced the first run before Steve Brye doubled to knock in two more. The Twins piled up a total of 16 hits but were able to add only two more tallies, one in the fourth on a safe bunt by Brye and singles by Randy Hundley and Rod Carew, and the other in the seventh when Holt singled for his second RBI of the game. Four double plays helped stop the Yankees, who were held to six hits but drew seven walks. A triple by Jim Mason and single by Elliott Maddox produced the Yankees' first run in the fifth and their other score came when Lou Piniella walked with the bases loaded in the eighth.

A's 5, Brewers 2 at Oakland (night game):
Joe Rudi, returning to action after missing two games with a finger injury, smashed a three-run homer to lead the Athletics to a 5-2 victory over the Brewers. A walk to Bert Campaneris and single by Reggie Jackson preceded Rudi's homer in the fourth inning. The A's went on to add two more runs in that same frame on a single by Deron Johnson, walk to Gene Tenace, single by Angel Mangual and a wild pitch. Dave Hamilton gained his fourth straight victory with the aid of Rollie Fingers, who relieved in the seventh inning.

Rangers 7, Orioles 6 at Texas (night game):
After falling behind by four runs, the Rangers battled their way back with the aid of three hits by Lenny Randle to defeat the Orioles, 7-6. The Orioles took their four-run lead in the first inning when Rich Coggins singled and scored on a double by Bobby Grich, Tommy Davis singled and Boog Powell smashed a homer. The Rangers got one run back in their half, but the Orioles made it 5-1 in the second on a double by Earl Williams and single by Mark Belanger. The Rangers then picked up a tally in their half of the second and tied the score in the fourth with three runs on successive singles by Toby Harrah, Leo Cardenas, Jim Sundberg, Cesar Tovar and Randle. The Orioles regained the lead in the fifth when Grich tripled and Don Baylor singled. The Rangers pulled even in the sixth and pushed over the deciding run in the seventh. In the sixth, singles by Jim Spencer, Sundberg and Randle produced the tying tally. Jeff Burroughs singled in the seventh, Jim Fregosi walked and Harrah won the game with a single.

Dodgers 8, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Bill Russell, Bill Buckner and Rick Auerbach each collected three of the Dodgers' 15 hits in an 8-3 victory over the Cubs. With two out in the fourth inning, the Dodgers scored twice to break a 2-2 tie. Auerbach and Doug Rau singled and when Rick Monday fumbled Rau's hit in center field, Auerbach raced home. Rau took second on the error, moved to third on an infield hit by Russell and scored on a bunt single by Buckner. The Dodgers put the game on ice with three runs in the seventh, all unearned as the result of an error by Dave Rosello. Rau, who pitched six innings for the Dodgers, was the winner, but Mike Marshall hurled the last three frames in his 31st appearance of the season.

Reds 7, Pirates 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
A bases-loaded triple by Johnny Bench in the seventh inning provided the Reds with a 7-5 victory over the Pirates. Bob Robertson hit two homers and drove in three runs to pace the Pirates to a 5-3 lead before the Reds rallied in the seventh. Cesar Geronimo walked and Pete Rose singled. After throwing two balls to Joe Morgan, Jim Rooker gave way to Ramon Hernandez, who completed the issuance of the pass to load the bases. Bench then hit his triple. Dave Concepcion followed with a single, plating Bench with the final run.

Astros 7, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Cesar Cedeno rapped four hits including a homer, as the Astros defeated the Mets, 7-1. Tommy Helms and Doug Rader chipped in with three hits apiece. The Astros started Jerry Koosman on his road to the loss with two runs in the second inning. Bob Watson singled and, after two walks loaded the bases, Rader drove in one run with a single and Don Wilson added another with a sacrifice fly. Singles by Cedeno and Watson led to a run on a sacrifice fly by Cliff Johnson in the fifth. Rader tripled and Helms singled to add a tally in the sixth, Cedeno homered in the seventh and the Astros wrapped up the scoring with their final pair in the ninth. Wilson gave up the Mets' run on singles by Cleon Jones, Rusty Staub and John Milner in the seventh before surrendering the mound to Fred Scherman.

Giants 6, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Two doubles by Garry Maddox and a homer by Ed Goodson paced the Giants' attack in a 6-2 victory over the Phillies. A single by Larry Bowa and triple by Greg Luzinski produced a run for the Phillies in the first inning before Goodson homered in the second. The Phillies added their second run in the third on a double by Dave Cash, bunt by Bowa and sacrifice fly by Mike Schmidt. Maddox then went into action, hitting a double in the fourth and scoring on a single by Steve Ontiveros. Bobby Bonds doubled in the sixth and counted the go-ahead run on Maddox' second two-bagger. The Giants clinched the verdict with their final three runs in the ninth on a walk and singles by Chris Speier, Gary Thomasson, Dave Rader and Bonds.

Cardinals 5, Padres 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Sonny Siebert posted his second successive shutout, pitching the Cardinals to a 5-0 victory over the Padres. Siebert, who held the Padres to five hits, also drove in the only run that he actually needed with a grounder in the fourth inning. Reggie Smith reached base five straight times with a double, homer and three walks. One of his passes came with the bases loaded in the sixth.
