Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Royals 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Aided by Grant Jackson's fine relief work, the Orioles eked out a 4-3 decision over the Royals. Tommy Davis drove in two runs to help the Orioles take a 3-0 lead before the Royals dented the plate when Amos Otis doubled and sped home on John Mayberry's sixth-inning single. The Orioles made it 4-1 in the home half when Brooks Robinson singled, Earl Williams walked and Mark Belanger singled in Robbie with what proved to be the deciding tally. The Royals erupted for two runs in the seventh, but Jackson arrived on the scene in time to put down the rally and preserve the triumph.

Twins 5, Red Sox 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Larry Hisle's one-out, bases-loaded, 12th-inning single scored the winning run as the Twins nipped the Red Sox, 5-4, and rewarded Bill Hands with his first victory in five decisions for 4 2/3 frames of hitless relief hurling. Steve Braun opened the Minnesota 12th with a single and stole second. Passes to Tony Oliva and Eric Soderholm filled the sacks after Bobby Darwin flied out. Hisle's game-winning blow followed. After the Twins had taken an early 3-0 lead, Boston tied the score in the fifth with the aid of a two-run homer by Carlton Fisk. The Twins took a 4-3 lead in the seventh when Rod Carew walked and tallied on singles by Braun and Oliva, but the Sox tied it again on an error by Luis Gomez in the eighth.

Reds 5, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Given a big lift by George Foster, who drove in one run, scored another and cut down a runner at the plate, Clay Kirby improved his record to 4-3 on a neat seven-hitter as the Reds whipped the Mets, 5-2. Foster doubled and scored on Andy Kosco's single in the second. Tony Perez singled and tallied on Dave Concepcion's third-inning double, and the Reds increased their lead to 3-0 when Kosco singled and sped home on singles by Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench in the fourth. With two out in the Mets' fourth, a pass to John Milner, singles by Dave Schneck, Jerry Grote and Jon Matlack and an error by Kosco gave the New Yorkers a pair of runs, but a perfect strike thrown by Foster from center field nailed Grote at the plate, attempting to carry home the tying run.

Phillies 5, Braves 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Six-hit pitching by Steve Carlton and a squeeze bunt by Del Unser, who scored Larry Bowa with the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning, highlighted the Phils' 5-2 victory over the Braves. Bowa opened the eighth with a single, moved to second on Greg Luzinski's hit and stole third, his 16th consecutive theft and 17th in 18 tries. On Unser's bunt, Bowa beat pitcher Carl Morton's throw home. Willie Montanez followed with a two-run double. In hurling a sixth straight complete game, Carlton fanned 11 and ran his season's record to 7-4.
