Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 5, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Although tagged for 10 hits, Doc Medich came close to a shutout while pitching the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the White Sox, who did not score until Ken Henderson homered in the ninth inning. The Yankees counted twice in the first, loading the bases and getting their runs on a sacrifice fly by Ron Blomberg and single by Elliott Maddox. Two more runs followed in the fourth when Bill Sudakis and Rick Dempsey singled, Jim Mason sacrificed and Gene Michael singled. Graig Nettles doubled and Sudakis singled for the final marker in the fifth.

Rangers 6, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Alex Johnson collected four hits and drove in four runs to support Jackie Brown's pitching as the Rangers defeated the Indians, 6-2. Johnson plated a run with a single in the first inning and doubled to account for two of the Rangers' three runs in the seventh. After Mike Hargrove homered in the eighth, Johnson singled home the Rangers' last run in the ninth. Oscar Gamble hit a homer for the Indians.

Brewers 9, Angels 7 at Milwaukee (day game):
Although Leroy Stanton and Frank Robinson batted in seven runs between them, it was not enough for the Angels, who lost to the Brewers, 9-7. Stanton and Robinson each homered with two men on base and Stanton added another RBI with an infield out. The Brewers, who had a bases-loaded double by George Scott in the first inning, were trailing, 7-6, when Scott opened the seventh with another double. With one out, Darrell Porter walked and Charlie Moore doubled to drive in Scott with the tying run. Pedro Garcia was handed an intentional pass to load the bases. Mike Hegan then batted for John Vukovich and singled to score the deciding pair.

Astros 4, Expos 0 at Houston (night game):
Allowing only three hits, Larry Dierker pitched the Astros to a 4-0 victory over the Expos for his first shutout since July 4, 1972. The triumph ended the righthander's personal three-game losing streak and put him back in the winning column for the first time since April 15. The Astros scored their first two runs in the second inning. Johnny Edwards singled and counted on a double by Doug Rader, who took third on the throw to the plate and scored on a wild pitch. Lee May produced the two other runs with a pair of homers.

Dodgers 6, Pirates 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Andy Messersmith turned in his second shutout of the season and 11th to the credit of the Dodgers' staff with a five-hit, 6-0 victory over the Pirates. Steve Garvey singled and Ron Cey homered in the fourth inning to give Messersmith more than enough runs to win. Garvey batted in two other runs with a sacrifice fly and single.

Mets 4, Reds 3 at New York (day game):
The Mets took Tom Seaver off the hook with a score-tying rally in the seventh inning and then won the game for reliever Ray Sadecki when John Milner homered in the eighth to beat the Reds, 4-3. Seaver was trailing, 3-1, when he went out for pinch-hitter Ed Kranepool, who singled with two away in the seventh. Ted Martinez ran for Kranepool. After singles by Bud Harrelson and Felix Millan loaded the bases, Cleon Jones singled to drive in the two tying runs.

Cubs 5, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Cubs broke a 1-1 tie with a run scoring single by Don Kessinger in the seventh inning and then added three more tallies in the ninth to clinch a 5-1 victory over the Padres. Singles by Andre Thornton and George Mitterwald around a pass to Vic Harris produced the Cubs' initial run in the second. Dave Winfield tied the score with a homer in the fourth. Mitterwald singled in the seventh, Ken Frailing sacrificed and Kessinger followed with his go-ahead single. In the ninth, Kessinger accounted for another RBI with a single and Rick Monday plated the final pair with a double.

Giants 9, Cardinals 5 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning, featuring a two-run triple by Chris Arnold and three-run double by Gary Matthews to defeat the Cardinals, 9-5. With one out, Gary Thomasson and Bruce Miller singled. Dave Rader forced Miller for the second out, but the roof then fell in on the Cardinals. Arnold hit his triple and scored himself when Bobby Bonds singled. Bonds stole second and counted on a single by Mike Phillips. After Steve Ontiveros doubled and Ed Goodson walked to load the bases, Matthews cleared the sacks with his two-bagger.
