Today's scores and summaries:
Rangers 5, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Knocked out in the sixth inning, Jim Palmer suffered his seventh straight defeat when the Rangers beat the Orioles, 5-3. Earl Williams drove in two runs with a single and infield out to put Palmer ahead, 3-2, before the righthander folded. Lenny Randle doubled to open the sixth and scored the tying run on a single by Jim Sundberg. After taking third on a single by Cesar Tovar, Sundberg crossed the plate with the go-ahead run on a groundout by Toby Harrah. Tovar, who advanced to second, then counted an insurance tally when Alex Johnson singled.
White Sox 8, Red Sox 6 at Chicago (night game):
Fire broke out in a concession stand in the eighth inning, causing a delay of one hour and 10 minutes before the White Sox completed an 8-6 victory over the Angels. Dick Allen homered with two men on base in the third inning when the White Sox scored four times. The Red Sox, who had a homer by Bernie Carbo in the first, went ahead, 5-4, with four runs in the fifth on a walk, three singles and a sacrifice fly, plus an error. However, the White Sox came back with three runs in their half. After three passes loaded the bases, Bill Melton scored on an error, Jorge Orta walked to force in Ron Santo, and Brian Downing crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Tigers 5, Angels 4 at Detroit (night game):
After both Al Kaline and Dick Sharon failed with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Jim Northrup came through with a two-out single, scoring John Knox, to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Angels. Knox bunted safely to open the frame and reached third on a wild throw by John Cumberland. Dick Selma then replaced Cumberland and almost pitched out of the jam before Northrup won the game with his single. The Angels built up a 4-0 lead with the aid of a two-run homer by Dave Chalk, but the Tigers rallied to tie the score in the seventh.
Indians 3, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The first major league pitcher to win 10 games this season, Gaylord Perry achieved that mark when the Indians defeated the Royals, 3-1. Paul Splittorff was the loser of the duel on two unearned runs. The Indians started the game with a run in the first inning when Frank Duffy was safe on an error by Fred Patek, advanced on an infield out and scored on a single by Charlie Spikes. The Royals came back with their tally on a triple by Frank White and sacrifice fly by Vada Pinson. The tie then persisted until the Indians scored another unearned run in the eighth on a double by Joe Lis, infield hit by Spikes and wild throw by White. Lis iced the victory with the Indians' only earned run on a homer in the ninth.
Brewers 6, A's 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Joe Colborn, who had been out with a pulled groin muscle, made his first appearance since May 10 and allowed only two hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to receive credit for the Brewers' 6-4 victory over the Athletics. Doubles by Ken Berry, Pedro Garcia and Don Money helped the Brewers build up a 5-1 lead against Catfish Hunter before the A's chased Bill Champion while scoring three times in the fourth. Colborn relieved and got another run for a working margin when Garcia homered off Blue Moon Odom in the Brewers' half of the fourth.
Twins 3, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Bert Blyleven turned in his first complete game since May 24 and pitched the Twins to a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. Glenn Borgmann batted in two runs for the Twins with a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning before the Yankees picked up a run in their half on a walk and singles by Graig Nettles and Rick Dempsey. The Twins chalked up what proved to be the winning tally in the fifth on singles by Rod Carew, Steve Braun and Bobby Darwin. The Yankees still were one run short after scoring in their half of the fifth on a single by Lou Piniella, double by Bobby Murcer and infield hit by Ron Blomberg.
Braves 5, Expos 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Buzz Capra extended his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 25 and lowered his earned run average to 1.17 by pitching the Braves to a 5-0 victory over the Expos. Capra also scored two of the Braves' runs after reaching base on a walk in the second inning and on a single in the sixth. Dusty Baker and Mike Lum batted in two runs apiece.
Astros 1, Mets 0 at Houston (night game):
A homer by Lee May in the second inning enabled Don Wilson to pitch the Astros to a 1-0 victory over the Mets. The shutout was the first for Wilson since August 2, 1973. Harry Parker, who served up the gopher, was the loser.
Dodgers 6, Cubs 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
A Bat Night crowd of 53,689 saw Jim Wynn collect three hits, including a homer in the ninth inning that brought the Dodgers a 6-5 victory over the Cubs. The Dodgers took a 4-0 lead in the first two innings, two runs scoring on a single by Wynn, before homers by Andre Thornton, Rick Monday and George Mitterwald powered the Cubs ahead, 5-4. Monday hit an inside-the-park drive with two men on base in the sixth. The Dodgers tied the score at 5-5 in the seventh on singles by Bill Buckner and Wynn and a grounder by Steve Garvey for his 50th RBI of the year. Wynn was right behind him with 49 RBIs after connecting for his winning homer off Dave LaRoche in the ninth.
Reds 7, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
A double by Johnny Bench, which provoked a heated argument, drove in two tie-breaking runs in the ninth inning as the Reds rallied to defeat the Phillies, 7-4. Cesar Geronimo singled to open the stanza and, after an infield out, Pete Rose was passed intentionally. Joe Morgan then forced Rose before Bench lined a drive down the left field line, Geronimo and Morgan scoring. The Phillies argued to no avail that the ball landed foul. Tony Perez followed with a double to drive in Bench. Perez had a two-run homer earlier in the game, while the Phillies' scoring included a round-tripper by Willie Montanez.
Padres 1, Cardinals 0 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres' two Davids -- Freisleben and Winfield -- combined to beat the Cardinals, 1-0. Freisleben pitched the first shutout of his pro career and the first to the credit of the Padres' staff this season. The rookie also handed the Cardinals their first shutout of the year. Winfield made the victory possible by hitting a homer off John Curtis in the seventh inning.
Giants 6, Pirates 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The first homer of John D'Acquisto's major league career provided a highlight for the rookie righthander, who pitched the Giants to a 6-2 victory over the Pirates. The Giants stepped out with two runs in the first inning on singles by Chris Speier and Steve Ontiveros and a double by Ed Goodson. D'Acquisto then provided enough additional runs to win by hitting his homer in the fourth following a walk to Bruce Miller.
