Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, Rangers 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Mike Cuellar failed to go the route, needing help in the ninth inning, but the veteran lefthander gained his seventh straight victory when the Orioles defeated the Rangers, 6-4. Bobby Grich, who had a homer, two doubles and a sacrifice fly, drove in three runs for the Orioles. Jim Fregosi homered for the Rangers. Cuellar put two men on base in the ninth before departing in favor of Bob Reynolds, who allowed a run-scoring single by Fregosi. Grant Jackson then took over and retired the next three straight batters, striking out two.

White Sox 13, Red Sox 6 at Chicago (night game):
Staging their best offensive show of the season, the White Sox piled up 18 hits and trounced the Red Sox, 13-6, before a Bat Night crowd of 42,096. The Red Sox took a brief 4-3 lead when Rico Petrocelli homered in the sixth inning, but the White Sox exploded for seven runs in their half. A single by Bill Sharp, an infield out and error by Petrocelli on an infield hit by Brian Downing accounted for the first run in the outburst. Dick Allen added two more with a homer. The White Sox then loaded the bases and Ron Santo capped the stanza with a grand-slam homer.

Tigers 5, Angels 2 at Detroit (day game):
Frank Tanana, who attended Detroit Catholic Central High School, faced his hometown club for the first time and was whacked for three homers as the Tigers defeated the Angels, 5-2. Tanana received a rude welcome in the first inning when Al Kaline singled and Willie Horton homered. Jerry Moses added a two-run drive in the seventh and, after one out, Ed Brinkman also hit for the circuit to knock Tanana out of the game. Mickey Lolich, who pitched for the Tigers, yielded seven hits, including a homer by Dave Chalk and run-scoring triple by Mickey Rivers.

Brewers 3, A's 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
On the verge of being shut out, the Brewers came alive with three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Athletics, 3-2. The A's scoring included a homer by Bert Campaneris. With one out in the ninth, Rollie Fingers, pitching in relief for the A's, walked Darrell Porter and Johnny Briggs. Bob Hansen followed with a single to load the bases. Don Money hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Porter. Bobby Mitchell then tripled off the top of the railing in right field, driving in Tim Johnson, running for Briggs, and Bob Coluccio, running for Hansen, with the tying and winning runs.

Yankees 3, Twins 1 at New York (day game):
Ending a scoreless duel, the Yankees pushed over three runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Twins, 3-1. Roy White led off with a single and Walt Williams sacrificed. Bobby Murcer singled, White stopping at third, while Murcer took second on the throw home. White, who suffered a leg cramp, gave way on the bases to Mel Stottlemyre. Lou Piniella was handed an intentional pass to load the bases. Thurman Munson singled, scoring Stottlemyre. After Graig Nettles grounded into a forceout at home, Chris Chambliss singled to drive in the Yankees' second and third runs. Pat Dobson, who started for the Yankees, left the mound in favor of Sparky Lyle in the ninth and the reliever gave up the Twins' run on singles by Larry Hisle and Eric Soderholm around a pass to Craig Kusick.

Braves 5, Expos 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Mike Lum in the fourth inning powered the Braves to a 5-3 victory over the Expos. Dusty Baker walked and Hank Aaron and Davey Johnson singled to set the stage for Lum's drive off Steve Rogers. The Expos, who had scored a run in the third, closed the gap in the sixth when Bob Stinson walked with the bases loaded and Jim Cox hit a sacrifice fly. However, Tom House, who relieved Carl Morton and received credit for a save, singled to add an insurance run to the Braves' total in the seventh.

Mets 6, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
The Astros' failure to execute a double play in the 14th inning resulted in a 6-5 loss to the Mets. With one out, John Milner doubled. Don Hahn was passed intentionally and Ray Sadecki singled to load the bases. Wayne Garrett then grounded to Roger Metzger, who threw to second, forcing Sadecki, but the relay to first was too late to nail Garrett, allowing Milner to score. The Astros tied the score at 4-4 when Cliff Johnson homered in the eighth. The Mets went ahead in the 12th with a run on singles by Milner and Hahn, together with an error by Metzger, but the Astros pulled even again in their half when Lee May doubled, Cliff Johnson beat out an infield hit and Sadecki, who covered first base, missed the throw from Felix Millan.

Cubs 6, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Billy Williams, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter and singled in the ninth inning, remained in the Cubs' lineup and doubled a run home in the 11th to defeat the Dodgers, 6-5. Jerry Morales helped put the Cubs in front, 4-2, with a homer, triple and double, but the Dodgers tied the score in the sixth when Jim Wynn and Joe Ferguson walked and Bill Russell doubled. Wynn singled to put the Dodgers ahead in the seventh. The Cubs then forced game into overtime with the tying run in the ninth on singles by Bill Madlock and Williams and a sacrifice fly by Don Kessinger. In the 11th, George Mitterwald walked and yielded the paths to Ken Frailing, who advanced to second on a sacrifice before scoring on Williams' hit.

Phillies 6, Reds 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Thanks to pinch-hitter Tommy Hutton, who singled in the ninth inning to set up the winning run, Steve Carlton was able to pitch the Phillies to a 6-5 victory over the Reds. After batting for Carlton and coming through with his hit, Hutton scored on a double by Dave Cash. The Reds scored all their runs on two homers by Bill Plummer and one by Johnny Bench. Plummer's first drive followed a double by George Foster in the fifth inning. The Phillies came back with three runs in their half for a 4-2 lead, but Plummer homered again in the seventh with the bases empty. Mike Schmidt connected for the circuit in the Phillies' half, but the Reds tied the score in the eighth when Joe Morgan doubled and Bench homered.

Padres 4, Cardinals 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres smacked two homers among their five hits and also took advantage of Cardinal pitchers' wildness to gain a 4-3 victory. The Cardinals, who collected 11 hits, scored twice in the first inning before Bobby Tolan started the Padres going with a homer in the third. Enzo Hernandez followed with a single and Nate Colbert walked. Rich Folkers, relieving Mike Thompson, passed Willie McCovey to load the bases. Johnny Grubb hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hernandez. After Derrel Thomas walked to fill the sacks again, Colbert counted when Dave Roberts forced Thomas. Roberts then homered in the sixth to account for the Padres' winning run, offsetting a circuit clout by Ted Simmons in the eighth inning.

Pirates 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
With last-out help from Bruce Kison, Dock Ellis gained his first victory since April 24 when the Pirates defeated the Giants, 5-2. Ellis was removed with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning. Kison allowed one run to score on a wild pitch before retiring Bobby Bonds on an infield grounder. The Pirates put together doubles by Richie Zisk and Manny Sanguillen, two errors and a single by Mario Mendoza for two runs in the second inning and added another run on two errors by Tom Bradley and a single by Gene Clines in the fifth. Singles by Zisk and Rennie Stennett and a grounder by Sanguillen produced a tally in the sixth. Ed Kirkpatrick closed out the Pirates' scoring with a homer in the ninth.
